Lost model alarm/discovery buzzer

Post by symowallo »

I am sorry in advance for what is quite a silly question, as the answer should be simple. Yet I can't work it out.

Latest OpenTX on Turnigy 9xr. I have figured out 3 stage flaps, landing gear and the basic stuff.

I have an HK Discovery Buzzer that you plug into a spare channel and it basically sounds an alarm when you trigger it via the tx. Should be easy, right? I can't work it out. I have plugged it into channel 7, and would like to configure one of the pots to trigger it so if I lose my model I can hear it.

I'd have thought it'd be easy but I just can't work it out. I simply need it to send an "on" when the pot is turned to 100%. Any help appreciated!!!

Thanks

Thanks but that didn't work. When I plug the buzzer in, it sounds constantly and P1 has no effect.

Try to plug a servo instead of the buzzer and see if it moves with the pot.

Nope, nothing. I have set channel 7 with source: P1, weight: 100%, curve: Diff 0

on the model main config menu. do you have it set to send 8 channels? scroll down and you will find an option to change the number of channels sent..

Reading the 1 picture/1 sentence user guide for this buzzer, apparently this buzzer simply needs the channel to be switched off/on to deactivate/activate. What happens now is that when it's plugged in, it's on all the time. I am only wanting to use the pot because I have no free switches left. So how would I switch on/off the channel using the pot?

Just like jhsa told you to. A simple 100% P1 line in the mixer under CH7. If that's not moving a servo either then there's something wrong somewhere else. Can you post a photo of your mixer screen where we see CH7?
Also, what RF module and receiver are you using?

Hope this is clear. The receiver must be OK since the alarm works OK, I just can't switch it off.

PS thanks so much for helping me with this...

OK I have found one thing I had wrong. I was using P1 because the 9XR manual said that the left most pot is P1. I have since recompiled opentx to include the 2 auto source options (or whatever they're called)... and I found that it is mapped as P3 in opentx rather than as P1 in the manual. So I've fixed that dumb mistake...

Glad to hear you got it working. One thing to do in any such situation is to use the graphic channel output home screen (the one with the horizontal bars) to determine the response to movement of each stick, pot and switch.

Just a caution about the HK buzzers: at least one type works only on 4.8-5v, not on higher voltage source. We bought several to use at the club flight school and found they didn't function with the 5-cell batteries used in most of the trainers.

Well it's still not working. I now have the right pot, but it still has no effect on the alarm.

the servo moves right?

if so what about if you replace the pot with a switch as source? For example:

Sorry, what I meant to say was that the buzzer works on/off with channel 7 when the AIL switch is used. So we know that the channel on the RX is OK.

OK further testing - I have changed it back to P3, and it's working when I turn the P3 knob past halfway. Turning it below halfway disables the alarm. Almost there!!! It appears that it takes about 5 seconds or so for the alarm to switch off after turning the knob to below the midpoint. So what I need it to do, is only sound when the P3 pot is set to its maximum value (or say 80% or greater). Will I need to set up a curve for this?

OK I have setup a 17pt curve, and adjusted the weighting (bit of hit and miss, I'm not really sure what the ramifications are there). Turning the knob just past half way sets off the alarm. It'll do for now, but I would really hope there's a way to set it so that it only sounds the alarm when at the extreme end of the knob's travel. With the 17 point curve, I set all of the points at -100 on the x and y axis, except for the right most point which is +100 +100

Try:
CH7: +100% P3 Offset(-80)
No curve

Thanks Mike, that'll have to do. I set the offset to -101 because -80 came in a bit low, and whilst it's not perfect, it'll do the job. THANKS EVERYONE!!! Coming from a DX6i, this is a huge learning curve but thanks to everyone's help, I'm getting there.

If you are using a receiver with a failsafe make sure the failsafe is set to activate the alarm on signal loss!

Actually that's a great idea Bill... it is failsafe capable so I should do that too.

Or try the following, using a (logical) Custom Switch

CH7 -100% MAX
:= 100% MAX CS1 (replace)

CS1 a>x P1 96
