Frsky Taranis X8R New Vario & GPS-01

Post by NeilRogers »

While waiting for my Taranis to arrive in the second phase I'm considering what telemetry devices would be useful in my restricted space gliders.

I've already purchase additional x8r & New Vario in case stocks are 0 when the taranis is available.

Question is GPS-01 being digital, can the output be plugged directly into the Vario bridge Data In and populate the parameters on taranis ?

or must the additional sensor hub be inserted inline ?

I guess Frsky will be developing all their sensors in S.Port eventually

Thanks neil

You would need the hub.

And yes sensors will be redesigned with the smart port system eventually.

Have same question.

Are you sure ? The Variometer manual says it could work as a bridge between S.port and non S.port sensors. I ask FrSky by email and wait for answer but just read in FrSky Telemetry wiki something like that:

Compatibility with "D mode" receivers
"D mode" receivers are not equipped with an S.Port. Currently the only way to connect S.Port sensors to those receivers is to use an FVAS-02 variometer sensor which can bridge (translate) between the S.Port and Data Port protocols.

If we need some hub what how should be bought ?

BTW:

Just got my parcel with receiver vario and lipo monitor. It looks to me I have to cut two wires from DATA IN vario connector and use black and yellow wires (GND and RX) and connect to DATA OUT from Lipo voltage monitor. I will try soon. Should work to me.

Anyway .. How the vario shows altitude ? Is it zero to the sea level or we can do "zeroing" to ground level before flight ??

Thanks.

What receiver do you have? The original question was about X8R, but you quote something that relates to D receivers...

I have got X8R and talking about using Vario as a converter from Lipo monitor with Data Port protocol to Smart Port standard. That what manual and FrSky says but I am not sure. They use a current monitor FAS-100/40 as example. Hope will be working with Lipo monitor as well.

I had previously questioned FrSky regarding this and got yhe following answer:

"--It doesnt be supported.It works when
old sensors(Fas-40/100) -> New vario ->X8R/D8R;
old sensors ->hub->New vario ->X8R/D8R;
new sensors1 ->new sensors2 ->... ->new sensorsn -> X8R;"

Specifically the possibility of connecting SPORT sensors to the Vario, and having the Vario connected to the serial port of a D series receiver does NOT work. The manual said it would work. FrSky said they would change the manual!

OK, so you need to buy the hub, connect both the GPS and the lipo sensor to the hub, and connect the hub's output to the vario.

Sorry mate I made little off topic .. I just want to use Vario and Lipo monitor only without hub because don't need anything else at the moment. Do you think It will be working in this setup as I said before ? I think NeilRogers user was mentioning same thing to use Vario with S.port backward in standard and connect GPS sensor.

I am confused ... I DON'T want to connect the Vario to the serial port of a D series receiver. I want to connect D series sensor to Vario and Vario to X8R by S.Port. Finally I don't know I need a hub :) :) According the first combination "old sensors(Fas-40/100 ->X8R/D8R)" I understand it doesn't need to be Fas-40/100 only and could be FLVS-01 what I bought. But I am still not sure. Maybe I am wrong but FrSky manual is very unclear to me ...

Not sure if I'm following this correctly -- so perhaps I'll offer this post and see if that sheds any light on the discussion. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost ... count=6822

Exactly what I did yesterday. Took yellow and black from Vario DATA IN and soldered to yellow and black from Lipo monitor DATA OUT.The problem is they only talk about Current sensor. Can not check at the moment as my Taranis is in Poland where I spend my holidays and use my models. Will try next week. Thanks for the link looks clear and logic.

The DATA OUT from the lipo sensor can only connect to either the FAS or the hub.
So as I said you need the hub for your setup.

Is that a hub you talk about ?

http://www.giantshark.co.uk/product/170 ... sensor-hub

yeah ... just read about FAS-40 and finally I order it. Thanks for all help. Maybe you know - can I set alarm on every telemetry screen value ? Overcurrent, low lipo voltage etc. ?

Have everything connected via vario and works fine :) Thank you for your help. I was flying 3 models all day and I am surprised how usefull it is. No longer need to set the timer. Voltage monitor says me what I need to know before crashing my planes. Thanks for your help guys.

Found the solution online, gut the connectors and weld the wires...

What are the type(s) of vario sensor(s) which allows to connect old sensor hub to X8R? If I understood correctly, new vario acts as converter between old 9XR/D8R sensor hub and Taranis/X8R.

I found two vario sensors; normal- and high precision. Ordered normal precision: "New V2 model works without sensor hub and can be connected directly to the receiver. It also supports FrSky new S.Port technology and other sensors can be daisy chained."
