Vario upgrade problems
Vario upgrade problems
Hi
I've upgraded two FrSky Varios today but had some problems along the way.
The big issue being around half way through the download to the vario, I had the dreaded BSOD on the PC a number of times.
Each time this left the Vario not working of course.
By persisting, I succeeded by switching to another PC, downloading the tool, driver and firmware again.
The PC that always crashed is Win7 64 bit.
The PC that worked is Windows Vista.
Is this a known issue? Or is it more likely that one of my downloaded files on the Win7 machine was corrupted during download?
My two Varios are now upgraded so I don't really want to try anything again just now.
PS - one of the Varios wouldn't speak S.Port. So I tried the Sport tool and found the ID set to 4 (from factory). Setting it to 1 has sorted that issue too.
Thanks

Re: Vario upgrade problems
All my machines are Win7 64 bits and it's ok, never had a blue screen. Might be the driver of the USB->Serial converter that has an issue.
What I've had on slower machines was that the download would hang if I was doing something else at the same time, seems in that case it's good not to touch anything including the mouse during the operation.

Re: Vario upgrade problems
I updated twice a Frsky vario using a Win 7 64 bits (and a FTDI232 with inverted tx & rx).
I had plenty of other applications open when I upload the firmware.
I had no problem during the 2 uploads.

Re: Vario upgrade problems
Great many thanks. It's worth persevering with then next time I need it.
I'll certainly download the USB driver again.
I did have a java update popping up around the same time, and probably lots of Chrome tabs open and an email client.
I wasn't doing anything else manually on the PC though.
PS
Has anyone tried the updated vario yet? Is the vario function improved?

Re: Vario upgrade problems
I compared the new Frsky firmware against an openxsensor over SPORT protocol (using a X8R rx).
It seems that the new Frsky firmware improves the vario function.
The Frsky data seems me still a little more noisy than openxsensor but it is much less than before.
So, there is a real added value upgrading the high precision vario with the new firmware

Re: Vario upgrade problems
Excellent, thanks you.
Re: Vario upgrade problems
I have two of the VARIO sensors. One is "high precision" and one is "normal" precision. Can I use the upgrade FW file for both, or does it just apply to the "High Precision"?
Re: Vario upgrade problems
I have applied to upgrade to both types and it helps with both.
I believe (don't know for sure) that the only difference between the two is in the quality of the pressure sensor chip.

Re: Vario upgrade problems
Thanks for the info. I'll apply upgrade to both varios...

Re: Vario upgrade problems
Will the upgrade fix problem of the vario reading alt in feet but climb rate in meters/second?

Re: Vario upgrade problems
The FRSKY upgrade is well worth doing, it really improves this core performance on the vario.
The vario devices do not do any unit conversions it is done by the TXOpen running on the TX

Re: Vario upgrade problems
To my knowledge there is no easy way currently other than adding conversion into the tx program.
Of coarse if you log the values you can read into an excel spreadsheet and add a conversion lto the values later.
Note the primary use of vspd is to provide the vario tones.
But I believe the next version of TXOpen will allow an user to use vspd as input and therefore a conversion could be applied

What the devs don't know will never be fixed!
