9XR, openlrs and Telemetry
Hey colleagues,
I would like to make my 9XR telemetry capable, either in conjunction with openlrs (which I already fly) or FrSky.
According to an article I found via Google , I only have to put two cables into the Futaba plug and connect it to two pins in the RF module. The method works for FrSky modules in conjunction with the Turnigy 9X and could (possibly) also work for openlrs and the 9XR.
Update 1:
I got the confirmation that this method will work with the 9XR but is it gonna work with openlrs ?
Otherwise, only the hardware mod remains, so solder tiny wires and cutting traces inside the 9XR (definitely outside my comfort zone), am I right here ?
The most important overall point is a easy well working Vario and Variosounds, Batteryvoltage telemetry would be nice but not necessary (maybe as future project).
The FrSky Vario might work with openlrs but I am also not sure on this one.
Important sidenote:
I do fly my remotes as Pulttransmitter which is the most common style here in Germany.
Only a few people use handheld transmitter.

Re: 9XR, openlrs and Telemetry
OK, lets get back to the topic.
Will the Turnigy 9xr work with the FrSky HF-Modul and Futaba Cable Method ? I decided to switch from openlrs (huge DIY-Mess) to FrSky.

No, the 9XR (not the PRO) needs the telemetry mod done to it to ne able to receive telemetry.

Re: 9XR, openlrs and Telemetry
I assume you are 100% sure, are you ?No, the 9XR (not the PRO) needs the telemetry mod done to it to ne able to receive telemetry.
Re: 9XR, openlrs and Telemetry
Yes I am, the old 9XR radio, just like the even older (but still being sold) 9X radio, needs the telemetry mod done to it in order to receive telemetry.
The mod consists in routing the AIL and ELE switches to other pins of the processsor and use their former pins to receive telemetry.
As a side note, yes, I am very sure about this. I have been messing with this nearly since the beginning when the open source firmware (Er9x) first appeared.
And I have modded a few radios
Something else you should know about the 9XR radio, if it still has the original firmware installed, which is a really old version of Er9x, you won't be able to save your models to the computer, as the cleaver (not) people at hobbyking modified the firmware, and broke compatibility with eepe and Er9x.
This also means that if you ever update the firmware of your radio (which I would recommend anyway), you will lose all the models you have programmed in the original radio firmware. So basically, you will need to write all the settings down and then reprogram them later after the update.
If they would have been smarter, you would only have to save your models to the PC using eepe, and them just load them again after the update

Re: 9XR, openlrs and Telemetry
Do you recommend updating the 9XR with Er9x or OpenTX ? And why do prefer one over the other ?
Sidenote: I purchased a X7 and I am happy (for the most part).

Re: 9XR, openlrs and Telemetry
Well, I would recommend Er9x for several reasons.
First and less important, my preference.
Other reasons, Er9x is still being maintained, opentx is not. Do not expect anything new from opentx on this platform.
Er9x allows for some hardware mods, you can even build your own voice module for it, and also use the module's SD Card to backup your models.
Er9x supports the multiprotocol module..
In my opinion, it also has a better menu structure using an index menu, that allows us to easily find the options we need..
