Receive 9xtreme and Installation

Custom 9x with M64/Telemetry Mod
Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
Ok, My mono cable arrived! Non local.MikeB wrote:Looks like you are using a stereo cable, or even one that carries power as well (4 connections). I've never tested such a cable, I've only ever used a mono cable (2 connections).
You have a Tx that has a plastic "shroud" around the module pins. This stops the DJT module from fitting properly, and may well stop some of the module pins from connecting. You need to remove this extra plastic around the pins, back to the level of the module bay.
Open up the radio, and remove the back board (held in with 4 screws). This removes the pins from the plastic. Now trim back the plastic shroud either using a sharp modelling knife of a Dremel type tool. Take care to only cut the plastic, not your fingers!
Then replace the backboard and try the DJT again.
Mike.
Nothing, values do not change. Plug the buddy cable into the back of the transmitter. set the transmitter to trainer mode, source Jack. Touch tip of cable to first module pin. Move sticks nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
I think you need to open the radio up and check connectivity. The PPM output (top pin of the module connector) gets to the back board from pin 7 of the 12-way connector at the right end of the 9Xtreme board. Pin 1 of that connector is towards the top of the 9Xtreme board.
Check this is connected using a test meter (radio power off).
This signal comes from pin 23 of the processor, so you could then check that is connected as well.
Mike.

Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
Hi all. Can anyone give an idiots guide for the telemetry connections to the dht diy module? My 9x had the telemetry mod done to the mainboard (wires soldered to the chip and connected to 2 points on rear of diy module-not even sure sure where i got the info from to do that!). I removed all the hack wires from the 9x motherboard and the cables soldered to back of dht diy module, and installed the 9xtreme on top. Where on the diy module do i connect the black and white frsky cable from 9xtreme board, and what do i select from the menu to get the voltage and rssi info that i had prior to my 9xtreme board going in?MikeB wrote:The black wire is data from the module (TX) to the 9Xtreme (SPort for an XJT). The white wire is data from the 9Xtreme to the module (RX).stewwy wrote:I have the DHT DIY kit with Telemetry fitted . I have the black and white wire fitted to board in the frsky port so what is each wire?
If using a DIY DHT module, you have the option of connecting this to the internal PPM/PXX connection, and the power for this module to the "internal power soft switch".
I think s_mack may have changed which pads these are on compared to the prototypes, so I can't tell which to use (yet).
Mike.
Hope someone can help, thanks Luke

Hi joao, to my rescue again...jhsa wrote:Was the DHT modified? or is it stock?

Stock, i'd say.
its connected to the FS TH9 BACK, using the red, yellow and black wires. I then soldered two cables to the back of the diy module, and ghese went to the 9x mainboard. The mainboard had been converted with the telemetry mod to 2 pins on thd chip, and the cables soldered to the board to allow pc connection. I did it myself but so long ago, i can't remember exactly.
Thanks, Luke

Did you use a level converter? This is important..
Can you post a picture of the module and how it was connected?
was it connected as in the picture below? with the level converter?

Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
Definitely didn't use a level converter or the two resistors. I can't find where i copied my hack from, but the diy module is connected to the +,-, and ppm at the back board. Two cables were soldered to the back of the diy module and ghese ran directly to the 9x mainboard, they were soldered around the botgom left of the chip ip, and i think these two points also ran onto the top part of the atmega, mahbe 7th and 8th pin injhsa wrote:Did you use a level converter? Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
Yeah these 2 telemetry wires were directly soldered to the DHT, right?
If so, your DHT was modified..
Ok, I think you need to connect the DHT as internal module, and use COM 2 for telemetry as it uses 3.3V level. If your module was modified it also uses 3.3V level for the telemetry. This is very important because different levels could damage both 9XT and RF module. If the DHT wasn't modified you would have to connect it to COM 1 or use a level converter to connect it to COM2.
So, to connect Power, Ground and PPM, have a look at the picture..
Mike, Steven, are pins 14 and 15 the ones for COM2?

So, i disconnect the red, yellow and black wires from thd 9x backboard, connect them to the 9xtreme module as you described above, and set to com 2. But where do i connect the black and white cables from the 9xtreme board, to the tx and rx side pins on the diy module?
Thanks, Luke

The telemetry wires for COM 2 we have to wait for Mike or Steven to answer.. We are not using the Black and white wires.

Yes, pads 14 and 15 are the COM2 connections, 3.3V, logic-level, non-inverted.

Those are the UART 3.3V non-inverted Tx/Rx and, from previous discussions, I believe that's what you've referred to in the past as "COM2".
Also, not using a level converter won't destroy the 9Xtreme, right Mike? The pins are 5V tolerent. The rf's fate? That I couldn't say.
Ahh right.. 6V. Sorry.
Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
Steven, I'm pretty sure that from previous discussions we did learn that an RS232 telemetry signal from the stock DHT/DJT RF module will likely destroy the 9Xtreme
I just wasn't sure where COM 2 was
Mike, I presume it is OK to connect a modified DHT (3.3V logic) to COM 2, right? And I think it is already been done??
Thanks

Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
1. Connecting an unmodified DHT or DJT directly to the COM2 connections (pads 14 and 15) will very likely damage the processor. The module(s) output RS2323 voltages (around +/-6V). It is the negative voltage that does the damage.
2. A modified DHT/DJT that bypasses the RS232 buffer, and outputs non-inverted, logic-level (3.3V) serial data may be safely connected to COM2 (pads 14 and 15).

Re: Receive 9xtreme and Installation
Hi João,
I think it could be me ...
I have a 2nd hand DHT from which the pre-owner removed the RS232 converter chip.
I asked here whether this DHT could me hooked to COM2.
But in the end I used something like this (I found it in my spare parts crate) to hook the DHT to COM1 (the black and white wires).

Sorry, was on a 250km drive there.
You can see the scorch type marks where the wires were soldered.
I'm confused again. Essentially, I have an unmodified frsky module (becaused everything is removed to make it stock), and a 9xtreme board. Is it not just a case of finding where the black and white wires from the 9xtreme attach to the dht module?
Thanks, Luke

Yes, I was not shure whether the level is 3.3V or 5V so the converter seemed to be the saver way ...jhsa wrote:... so you converted the telemetry signal back to RS232? ...
When I look at Luke's picture it seems that not only the track is cut but also the via has gone...
If the via is still present and OK then restoring the track should make the trick.
Then the standard connections on the long side of the PCB can be used to connect to
the white / black wires.
If this is not possible, the I would use a RS232/TTL converter hooked to this two tracks we
see near the "U3" label (those with the scorch type marks).
