FYI,
Home Depot is now selling the MakerBot products. The $3k MakerBot is really well built. Now to convince some well off turbine flyer in our club he needs one. Then I can mooch from him. That or a local hobby shop.
All kidding aside, it's really really nice!
The demo rep says they're working on a Kevlar MakerBot now.
Actually the $1300 smaller MakerBot does a lot but limited in platform size and height as well as the super fine extrusion mode.
Heads $175 for 400 hours. $85 a roll for plastic thread.

MakerBot are pretty much the Futaba of 3D printing. They've got a name, a good marketing dept and make pretty cases so they can sell their thing for twice as much, including supplies.
Not sure they're the best bang for the buck.

Re: MakerBot 3D Printer
I agree but they've set the bar that knockoffs will try and achieve. Almost plug and print and very little fine tuning required but at a price. HK I'm thinking will look into this at some point.
The fact that Home Depot is offering it in their stores shows forward thinking that home repair/DIY and contractors may have a use for the technology.
I saw this one making custom AC wall and switch plates as well as knobs as a demo. Even a working adjustable wrench.
Exciting times.
