New variometer
New variometer
I am thinking that this might help a few taranis telemetry students out there.
I wasted quite a few hours struggling to get the vario working.
When using with the smart port on the new X8 receivers you MUST bind in the D16 mode.
Credit to Wayne at Aloft hobbies!
when using with the D8 XP, the instructions said to plug the yellow into the TX pin, but in my case it oly worked when plugged in to the RX pin.
Finally, everything worked perfectly including passing through all the sensor data from the sensor hub.
For those of us who are not full fledged techies, every success is a celebration

Re: New variometer
hello!
I have turnigy 9X (NOT 9xR!!!) radio with FRSKY telemetry module, and D8R-II and D8R-II plus receivers.
I found the new HUB LESS variometer sensors:
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__ ... sion_.html
and
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__ ... sion_.html
My question is, do I just easily plug in one of the sensors directly to the receivers port, and how will I see (hear) the data? do er9x supports it? how to set the alarms for the variometer sensor?
thanks in advance for help..

Re: New variometer
Assuming you have the FrSky version of er9x loaded, then on the TELEMETRY2 menu there are settings for the vario.
Try
Source Vspd
Switch Choose a switch to turn the vario tones on
Sensitivity 2 (this is what I use, larget number les sensitive)
Sink tones As you require
With the vario plugged into the Rx connection, it actually uses the HUB protocol without the hub.
Set the sound option in the RADIO SETUP to PISPKR, or PiSpkRVOICE if you have the voice module. I use the voice module and have the height spoken to me every few seconds.
One of the telemetry screens shows the Alt(titude). When on this screen, if you press MENU LONG, then the Altitude is set to 0.

Re: New variometer
What's the setting on the Taranis with opentx flashed in it, xr8 d16 mode and the Frsky precision vario to hear the tones please?
I also would like to turn it on and off with a switch.
The vario has the latest FW in it.
Thanks

Re: New variometer
Use custom functions to assign a switch to turn it on / off.
Don't personally have one, but would figure you could use :
-5 -0.1 0.1 5

I did read the manual and see in custom functions "Vario: Turns on variometer sounds (see Telemetry setup)".
I'm hoping for a post with an actual working vario tone setup.
It's the -5 -0.1 0.1 5 numbers that are confusing me.
Re: New variometer
Telemetry setup page, vario settings.
The custom function alone is enough to give you tones, then you may or may not want to tweak those settings to your liking.

What does the values -5 -0.1... Represent?
I think my vario is working, raising it from floor to limit of reach gets beeps and altitude changes.
..
SwG-- vario
SwG^ Play Value alt
In Functions
NEVER MIND!
As usual it was int the manual but I had missed it
"
FrSky vario sensors as well as the openxvario (vertical speed is calculated by the sensor). Limit sets respectively the maximum expected sink rate, low and high dead band (no sound), and maximum climb rate for the sounds generated by the Vario custom function.

May try to fly it tomorrow..Friday

New variometer It works
I could get altitude read announced....and maybe hear some vario clicks.
When I got home and looked at the setup and Vario volume was set at about half. For the next flight it will be at Max Volume.
According to the log file Vert Speed was working fine. Logging is cool!
So I suspect I didnt have the volume high enough for my impared hearing.
(Rifle team in Army with no ear plus may be a factor...and seting beside a screaming computer for a few years.
---obviously the 77+years have nothing to do with it )
Where is haptic when you need it?
I did find the words in the manual about
Limits dead zone ...
-5 -0.5 0.5 5
but think I could still use a little practiacl guidance about these terms. H E L P
Would mouting the Vario on top of the EsC cause spurious readings?
This was all in a Radian. Motor off most of the time.
D4F receciver with cheap voltage divider and vario going to the 4 pin connector on the rx.Power pack voltage on screen and announced via switch...I love gizmos!
Resetting the Flight while flying apparently shuts down the data being logged....SWR and RSSI go to zero and altitude is assumed to be zero at this point....meaning I landed at about -198 meters. Didn't seem to damage the planes so must of been in Death Valley

Re: New variometer
Resetting the flight sets everything to zero.
Best to only do this before launch.
-5 -0.5. 0.5. 5
To my understanding equates to.
- Stop beeping at lower than sink rate of -5
- Start beeping at sink rate of -0.5
- Start beeping at climb rate of 0.5
- stop beeping at climb rate of more than 5
Make sense?

Re: New variometer
Yep what you say makes sense.
Now I wonder why I wouldn't want to know about much larger sink or rise rates?
I'm really new to thinking about this from s serious soaring thing, just getting past not crashing, it has been my priority. First thermals just a few weeks ago.
Now I'm thinking about ALES competition. Radians seem very competitive in my club competition and are cheap and easy. Of course telemetry not allowed in competition, but great for practice....I think. ?
Next outting I'll try my Taranis mix for CAM, 30 second or 200 meter motor cut.

Re: New variometer
I believe it's a little bit different.
IIRC, the sound (pitch) will be able to be varied by a certain amount. This available variation will be scaled to the range for up/ down lift according to the rangethat is given by the first two parameters for down and the second two parameters for up.
According to the sample of -5 -0.5 +0.5 +5.0 it is quiet within the range of -0.5 to +0.5.
The down sound will start at <= -0.5 and (continuosly) change until it reaches -5.0 and then no further change to the sound for any higher negative vario values.
And the same will be effective for the positive values with the up sound.

Hmm, looks like it's gone. Can't find it where it used to be. I see they've rearranged some things, probably got lost in the process. Send them a mail to ask?

I can't thank you enough for this info. I have been trying for 3 days to get Alt working on my tranis. Why is there no info about this in the instructions sheet about setting channels to D16. All working now. THX again
Re: New variometer
Does anyone have an epee file for c9x that would programme the high precision vario with x8r rec? I've managed to get the altitude to increase on the screen by raising the glider but no vario sounds. Ideally I would like to have the height sounded out say every 20 ft. Flying a Bird of time with dx8 was fun until you looked at the tx screen to read the altitude!

Re: New variometer
You can do this using custom functions.
Check the custom functions screen. Assign the Vario function to a switch, and magic will occur

Re: New variometer
From this posts I have understood that setting the variometer make the altimeter working as well? In my case my vario is working but not altimeter. What is wrong?
I set only the values for vario, I have a beeps using a switch, but altimeter is not working.

My problem is solve! I have found here info that in case of receiver D8R-XP yellow wire from vario should go to Rx and not to Tx (strange !, but this is true, fr sky don't know where to connect the wires!). After connection to Rx I have vario and alt both
working. But, perhaps the changing settings somewhere in Taranis will correct this problem as well, don't know Thanks !

Add another to the list of those who wasted a lot of time trying to get smartport vario to work on a X6R and Taranis when the real answer was simply to switch to D16 mode. In fact, this information is so important that it needs to be repeated. Hopefully the next time somebody can't get the smartport telemetry to work with an X series receiver, they will have a much easier time of finding this thread in a search than I did.flierman1945 wrote: I can't thank you enough for this info. Smartport telemetry not working? Alt, Vspd, vario all read zero? The smartport telemetry will not work with a X6 or X8 receiver bound to a Taranis in D8 mode.
