Eachine ER transmitter

I picked up one of these on Facebook and wanted to have a play around with it.

It uses an ATMEGA128A, which I assume is what is usually referred to as the m128 processor.

It's running OpenTX 2.1.9, which I know is the last one to support AVR processors, so there's no upgrade path there.

My current issue is that I can't get it to talk to OpenTX Companion 2.1 on a PC.

When I plug in the USB lead, the EACHINE logo at the top of the transmitter lights up, so I'm getting power but the PC doesn't find a USB device.

I've found the correct buttons for the left and right trims but holding them down and powering on does not get into bootloader mode. Is that the correct procedure on this version of OpenTX ?

I know the lead and PC side is OK as I use the same ones to communicate with an X-Lite Pro with Companion 2.3

What's that radio? Photo? Never heard of it.
There's no bootloader nor PC connection facility at all on AVR based radios, basically any exchange requires an atmega programmer. I doubt there's one built in to the radio.

I wonder what the USB connects to in the Tx?

Shipped as part of the package with their Novice III drone but never seen it advertised separately.

Two sticks, four 3 way switches (of which only one functions as a three way switch), two pots on the front.

Runs off a 3S lipo directly from the balance port (see below!)

As it turns out, only two pins.

The 8 pin chip on the right is a CS5095 USB to three cell Lipo boost charger chip.

Yeah that's what I expected, USB there just for charging.

I thought last night I'd just put it back together again and sell it as a spare for someone. Then I remembered I had deleted the model, and have no way to reconstitute it. Rookie mistake!

So, what to do with it? As far as I can tell, it's effectively a Turnigy 9X in a different box.
