Is there any reason I can't add a FrSky module to my Horus and transmit with both the internal and external modules and pair this with an rx8r and an x8r to get redundant transmitter signals and redundant receivers Assuming I bind the internal modula and the external modules to different receivers?

That's fine, you just need to disable telemetry on the external XJT and separate the antennas as good as possible.

Any idea how far the antennas need to be seperated?

As far as possible pretty well defines it. I set the two antennas at different angles.
