Flash lights on release of servo - Bait Boat Help

Post by johnrcglider »

Hi all, I am trying to upgrade my own r/c bait boat for fishing, I currently have a boat called a Waverunner Mk3, the mother board inside has gone faulty so thought I would upgrade to all custom electronics.

The boat is powered by a 12v 10AH lead acid battery which I want to use a Lipo instead,

The boat has lights all around it, one side green, one side red, back two are blue and front two are white, I want to use one the switches to drop the bait hoppers which are currently electro magnets that get a feed to release the hopper doors, I need to know what I can wire in that will send a positive to power the electro magnet?

Also when the hopper door is released the lights flash a couple of times to let you know, how can I achieve this?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

John

And what radio system are you using??

An RC switch would do the trick..

again, if your electronics don't have it built in, you might need another RC switch for the lights, so they can be controlled by the radio through the receiver.
Again, it is important to know what your radio system is.. :)

Ok, I use Ersky9x. Do you already have the magnets and lights connected to RC switches? Or you still have to get them?

Programming the release and the lights should not be very difficult.. How do the electromagnets work? They are always energized and open the door when you disconnect the power, or do they open the door when you power them?

Hi João, thank you for your help and time,

The doors drop when power is applied to them, they are magnetised with nothing connected, power demagnetises them,

Have you any links or list of bits that I would need? There are also two motors so I take it I would need two ESC’s

Thanks John

Image this is the magnets

Image this is one motor

Also with the receiver antenna is there any external aerial you can get that will connect to receiver aerial so that it gets better signal?

Sorry for all the questions

Understood.. :)

I thought you already had at least the main electronic stuff like Receiver, Motors and ESCs :o

Do, the lights flash all at the same time? That would mean only one switch for all of them. if they flash, or are turned ON separately, you will need more RC switches, and more channels on the receiver.

So:

Channels I am assuming you might need

Motor
steering, Rudder or second Motor (This can be made using a rudder or motor differential using two motors)
Door Open
Lights
Is this correct?

I think Hobbyking had some little cheap RC switches that should handle enough current for what you need.
I personally like to build my own electronic stuff, that is why I wouldn't know what to recommend :)

EDIT: What RF Module and Receiver are you using??

So, how many different light circuits?
Every light circuit would need its own switch
Dimming lights would also need their own electronic circuit to do that. and I don't know any commercial product that could do that.. :(
Can you build electronics? There might be a couple DIY projects that might do what you want..

2 light circuits, will leave the dimmable part for now if quite complex

Can have a go, good at soldering but would need to know what to solder to what.

Hmm, might have some project I worked on a while ago. It is based on another project that a user of this forum sold on ebay. I wonder if he still does it. :(

The project involves also programming an ATtiny85 chip. Have you messed with arduino boards before? I will post a link in a while..

Waht makes this project really good and quite unique, is that you can control up to 4 different devices using only one channel of the receiver, and not 4 channels (1 channel per device) like most commercial devices. This would allow you to control more lights separately, or the bait doors separately, or what else you wanted to switch :)

Thanks João

I have looked at some rc switces which look like they will do the job, will look into the arduino route as never played with them, is the code easy to copy and paste into an IDE? I am using a Mac but have access to windows too.

How would I setup ersky9x to mix the steering for the two ESC's? I want forward and backward and left and right all on

Right hand stick of the handset.

Many thanks John

You can download the code from the link I've posted and open the file directly on the IDE.
The code is setup for an ATtiny85 or 45 chips.. They are smaller than a complete arduino and have less pins and inputs. But it is enough for 4 switches.. Then you need to connect BJT transistors or MOSFETs, controlled by the chip, to switch the load (LEDs and ElectroMagnets) The chip itself can't handle the current needed, therefore you need the transistors. You could also use micro relays, but they are bigger.

then you need to setup the radio. That is also explained on the project page..
I can also help with that.. :)
How would I setup ersky9x to mix the steering for the two ESC's? I want forward and backward and left and right all on

Right hand stick of the handset.
That is quite easy:
You need something like this:
Motor LEFT on the CH1 and Motor RIGHT on CH2. I assume that your radio is Mode 2? so Ail and Ele on the right stick.

CH01 50% Ele
50% Ail

CH02 50% Ele
-50% Ail

Please try this in Eepskye, and simulate it. Then see what it does when you move the sticks.. :)
Values might need to be adjusted.

Thanks again, if I didnt want to go down arduino route, would 2 or 3 rc switches be ok?

How would I setup ersky9x to flash the lights on say channel 4 if hoppers on channel 5 or 6 were dropped?

Thanks

Ok, the final values will depend on what channel values your RC switches need to turn ON, but here is something you can play with.
I assume the Bait doors just need a momentary action to release them, and they will remain open, right?
if so, we can just use the TRN switch which is momentary. This can of course be changed.
Bait doors on CH6, Lights on CH4.
Expected behavior. The AIL switch turns the lights ON normally as a light switch would do :)
The blinking will only happen if the lights are ON, does it make sense? or should the lights blink even if the lights are OFF?
In the example below, the lights will only blink if the light switch (AIL) is turned ON, so, lights ON

First we create a couple Logical switches:
L1 1-shot TRN 4 and (AIL) (L1 will turn ON for 4 seconds when the TRN switch (doors switch) is pressed, but only if the AIL switch is also ON. After 4 seconds will turn OFF)
L2 Timer On 0.5 Off 0.5 and (L1) (L2 is a timer that will change state every half second. It will work only if L1 is ON.)
So, you turn AIL ON, then press TRN, L1 will turn ON for 4 seconds, and L2 will be changing state every half a second for the same 4 seconds. when the 4 seconds end, the timer stops again.. Still following?? ;) :)

No we program some mixes, so we tell the switches connected to the receiver what to do :)

CH04 100% FULL switch (AIL) (This just turns the lights ON or OFF)
R 100% sL2 switch (L1) (This is a second mix (Replace mix, please note the "R" at the beginning) on the same channel that will Replace the mix above when enabled. So sL2 is the logical switch L2, which is the Timer, and L1 is the logical switch that is used to enable the mix for 4 seconds, replacing the mix above, and making the channel go from min to max a few times.

CH06 sTRN (This is your momentary switch to let the doors open)

I hope I did explain it in an easy way. Well, at least I tried with my best English, which is not that good :)
Please try this on Eespkye, simulate it, and try to understand how and why it works.. Have fun..

Hi João,
I assume the Bait doors just need a momentary action to release them, and they will remain open, right?
Yes they get a 12v pulse and they stay open
if so, we can just use the TRN switch which is momentary. This can of course be changed.
Slight problem with this, is that there are two doors, both are independant, so can drop one or other or both

The boat also has two seperate hook/line dropper relay pins, again both need to be independant, would be good to have choice depending on if a switch is selected then it will drop hook with the associated dropper, either left or right or on its own without bait dropping
Lights on CH4.
Expected behavior. The AIL switch turns the lights ON normally as a light switch would do :)
The blinking will only happen if the lights are ON, does it make sense? or should the lights blink even if the lights are OFF?
In the example below, the lights will only blink if the light switch (AIL) is turned ON, so, lights ON
Yes this is perfect.

Is it now possible if you could update switches/mixes for how it works now.

Many thanks

Think it would be good to have the hook droppers on POT1 & POT2? would this work, if say they get to 50% they activate? or bad way?

Bait hopper left by holding left stick to the left for say 2 secs and bait hopper right by holding left stick right for 2 secs?

You never mention the other stuff you want on the boat. i can't guess :)

So, please list everything the boat has, I mean, everything that needs to be controlled by the radio. Also, with so much stuff, i think you won't have enough channels, you only have 8 in total according to what you said, and 2 are used to control the boat itself. That leaves 6 for extras like the lights and the doors.

This can be done and still flash the lights when either is opened.
The boat also has two seperate hook/line dropper relay pins, again both need to be independant, would be good to have choice depending on if a switch is selected then it will drop hook with the associated dropper, either left or right or on its own without bait dropping
How does this work? with relays? Servos? Electromagnets? it just opens something and the hooks drop?

Is it now possible if you could update switches/mixes for how it works now.
I am not getting what you mean.. I don't even know how it works now :) Remember that I don't have the boat in front of me and can't see it..
Also my goal is not to do all of it for you, it is to put you in the right direction, so you can do it yourself, hence the long explanation on the example above, which should be very close to what you need. :)

If you want to change the switches to another ones, you can do it yourself. That is the basic of the basic.
also creating a mix on a channel to open a door, or controlling a relay is the most basic programming on the radio. If you can't do that, you won't be able to even drive your boat (exaggerating here)

Please have a look at the Er9x manual to learn how to create a single mix.. Practice with Eepskye. Download the manual from www.er9x.com
I will help you with this, but you need to do it yourself :) Fair?? ;)

Ok, sorry,

This is what I want the complete list

I want to use the right stick for throttle and steering,

Boat has 2 independent motors, so need mixing for steering

2 independent bait hoppers (these are controlled by 2 pairs of electromagnets)
2 independent hook release (these are small pins that quickly pull in on getting signal)
Navigational lighting circuit controlled via a switch
Spotlight controlled via switch

Lights flash 3 times on hopper drop or hook drop

I am using Turnigy 9XR Pro with ersky9x installed

FRSky DJT Module
FRSky D8R-II Plus

If I run out of channels I will not use spotlight, but thought I could control 16 channels with this receiver.

Think this is all, John

Not, the DJT, which uses the D8 protocol only has 8 channels.
It seems you might need exactly 8 channels..

Please do some research, experiment with eepskye simulator. I would like you to post here a mix to control a simple ON OFF relay..
Please look at my example. As i said, experiment with eepskye simulator.. This is the basic of the basics :)

Learning time :D When you know how to do that, you can program most of the switching on your boat. :) The most difficult part, the blinking lights, I already posted above.. :) Have fun.

no..
your throttle is stopped when the stick is in the middle right? The right stick is spring loaded.
You can leave it at Mode2 and just use the source "Ele" for the throttle.. I already posted the motors mix above. Just use it. that will control the throttle with the right stick.
here is the mix again.

CH01 50% Ele
50% Ail

CH02 50% Ele
-50% Ail

in Mode 2, Ele is the right vertical stick.

Something to keep in mind, Stick mode and Channel order are 2 different things.
RETA is the channel order, nothing to do with stick mode..
And in your case you can forget the channel order. Just use the first 2 channels for the motors.

To learn the difference between stick mode and channel order please refer to the er9x manual..
