What skills do you need to start working on the 9x? Any recommended hardware?

FlySky FS-TH9X Soldering problem

Post by astrah »

Hi all, first post so please bare with me.

I have the FlySky FS-TH9X and was happily tinning away ready to solder the leads on for the ER9X upgrade. I'd already done 5 of the 6 pads (I'm not bad at soldering) and when I went to tin the RESET pad it literally lifted and came away from the board, I only applied the tip of the iron for about 2/3 seconds. I tried cleaning the surrounding area but couldn't find a good enough surface to solder to. Is there another point on the board I could solder to or is it a case of splashing out for the smartie board.

Have a look at the picture in this post: viewtopic.php?f=94&t=3352&p=49220&hilit ... pad#p49356.
The RESET pad is clearly visible with a large tantalum capacitor (black with grey bar at the left end) just above it. The left end (with the grey bar) of this capacitor is also reset so just solder your wire there.

The SmartieParts board would only work if the reset pad was present.

Thanks so much Mike. I realised after I wrote the post that the smartieparts has 'legs' that touch the pads. I'm new to all this so learning as I go. Here is the pic of my board where things went belly up, can you tell if it's a V1 or V2 board. I've been reading somewhere that you don't use the SCK pad. Is this correct?

V2 board, the SCK pad is in the correct place.
In your case, the 'reset' capacitor is a pale orange colour with a dark band at the left end.
It's worth cleaning the area where the reset pad was to make sure there aren't any solder shorts, I use a "cotton bud" damped with some cellulose thinners. Isopropyl alcohol also works.
