The Future T9X Radio Project

Post by LTMNO »

Hello All, I saw the most interesting Radio used on the WWW for Xbee control of Robotics (Q2 TX from Quantum Robotics).
FutureT9X.jpg
I thought that this would be an awesome project to refit a T9X inside a similar configuration and with the help of my CNC machine
by milling out the right sizes for the Gimbals and LCD Screen and everything else necessary in the right places.

What do we have or could have with the electronics in the Radio?

Firstly, can have an internal Module (so don't need to worry about External Mounting Case)
6x Single Throw Switches (on/off) - (Including Power Switch)
1x 3way Switch ( could be replaced by 5K Pot)
1x Trainer Switch
3x 5K Pots
6x single press buttons for LCD (up/down/left/right/menu/exit)
1x Trainer Jack

Extras
1x Joystick
1x Single Throw Switch to Enable 2x 5Pots or Joystick
1x Interface for Porgramming ( in my case, USB with SP Board )
1x Charing Port ( Connected to Internal Battery )
1x Serial Interface to MegaSound9X
1x Speaker
1x LED Backlight
1x Rotary Encoder

I think its doable…
And I think it would be cool to turn on and off a set of Pots like I already do for my Joystick and Replace my 5 Pos Mode Select with Push Buttons with LED Feedback.
I believe the LCD should be at the top of the Radio where it is in better line of sight.

What do you think?

I like the looks of that…
Cell Phone integration, that would be good if I had an android then I could use the Android version of GCS for my Ardupilot.

Radio parts are coming next week… need to get the CNC machine tuned out for some precise cuts…

Considering that I will only be flying Multi-Rotors, it might not be that all bad.
I have been told, I am all thumbs before…. ;-)
I might see if I can integrate a support LCD that Mike has written code for.
I will have to research that one…

I came across this DJI Phantom Tx kit that is being promoted by a developer. It requires a donor Phantom R/C Tx to build it.

I realize it is not what you are looking for, but the photos will give you more reference examples for your DiY Tx case project. For starters, it does not look like a layout I would want, especially since a sun shield on the LCD wouldn't be practical. Plus it looks a bit "cheap" (but more manly than the Phantom's toy'ish looking Tx).

Hi Thomas, very cool.... i like that.... a little beefy and not really integrated via the screen, etc... but its definitely cool.
I ordered a Taranis this morning and it should arrive next week from HK.
All the more reason to have my old radio and a new barebones radio to play and test with.... while the T-Rex can still fly my devices.

Thanks again for the post!

Have a great weekend.

Pino.

I like the one with the idea of using a cell phone and able to use the cell phone as display screen including using the touch screen on cell phone via BT. No screen any more without your phone. each set up page will be an app icon. No limitation of screen resolution any more. there will be only one common interface with the Tx processor. Any android phone can be used as screen. It actually can be used as a key. NO one can use your Tx without the code you set up in your android phone. :) any one wants to write an android app to link to the Tx?

Well, the radios have arrived... thanks to Steven at SmartieParts.com, I now have 4 radios of Parts of which I could build at least 2 good working radios.
I am going to use this stock pile to begin the prototype build as soon as possible.

Very Excited here!

Oh, it just so happens that my Taranis Radio finally came in. My wife is going to go nutz seeing 4 boxes of T9's and the one I already have and a new Taranis.

Yikes! ;-)

If I don't post anything for a while, send in the troops... I might need some help.

Tell her is is cheaper to buy 4.

Because of shipping costs, you can sell 3 and cover the cost of your own :)

Firstly, I just wanted to say that the Taranis feels amazing... the sticks are dreamy compared to the T9X. I don't even want to turn it on as i am afraid that I won't put it down.

Now for a visit into my office...

Here is a picture of the top of my desk where the evidence is placed...
Notice the (4x) T9x Boxes and the Silver Taranis box, She is so used to seeing my MultiRotors up there and she doesn't really look anymore.
On top of my desk.jpg
Here is a picture of her desk which is directly behind mine. I have duct-taped her chair so that it won't recline anymore, this will prevent her from leaning back 30 degrees and getting a good field of view at the top shelf. She stands 5'2" and really doesn't move her head in that direction... i am going to see how long this plan works. ;-)

Thanks for the support.
