Yippeee!!! :D :D Phase one is done!!! The processor's MOSI & MISO traces are cut and the teeny pieces of AWG30 have rerouted the switches to pins 41 & 42. The 9x now powers up without warnings (unless I have the switches actuated) and jumps straight to the first model screen.

Now I get to contemplate getting the telemetry connected. I'll probably just parallel into the cable installed for the programming socket. As you might be able to see from the last picture, I've added a few small drops of hot glue just to stabilize the 30ga wires at each end, and in the process I made the MISO & MOSI pads kind of inaccessible. Oh well, after all I've been through thus far, this final step doesn't seem like that much of a challenge. Just need to get it done.

Thanks again for all the help... I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I'm just getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus and lots has changed. I'll still fly my old Futaba 72mhz gear, but this new stuff sure opens a lot of new doors. Exciting stuff.

it is.. wait until you want voice, and rotary encoder, and replace the processor ;)

I can only imagine. I've got a Taranis and am not that excited about the voice thus far, however I suspect that all will change once I actually get the hang of having it do what it can really do.

What's the rotary encoder mod for? Got a link??

(Curious, my pictures seem to have disappeared.... did I do something wrong? They were there when I originally sent the message but for some reason all I'm seeing now are the little icons. Hmmmmm.....)

Something that the Taranis should have and it doesn't.. One of the reasons that prevented me from getting one.. waiting for the next radio ;)

Got encoders on both my 9x's :)

I knew you wouldn't be a quitter, good for you!
The only thing left is to add a rs233 to TTL converter so the DHT can talk to the 9x MOSI and MISO or modify the DHT to output TTL instead of rs233 but it's the more difficult mod.
I use the max233 mod myself.
You need to look over the mods first and decide the best one for you to do.
Many pros and cons so let those posts start when your ready.

After a bit more research I think I'm going to simply duplicate RCHacker's telemetry mod, scroll down to Step 2 ... cut a couple traces on the DHT board, install a couple resistors and parallel MISO/MOSI in a twisted pair that simply plug into the DHT's telemetry socket. I can attach those wires directly to my programming port @ pins 1 & 9. That'll be lots easier than cutting into the middle of the ribbon cable that connects it to the main board. Some fresh heat shrink will provide strain relief at the programming header, should be nice & neat.

Once the telemetry is available on the 9X's main screen would there be any logical reason to provide for the possibility of plugging in the FrSky telemetry module and using it instead? It wouldn't be a big deal, I would just need to provide a socket for it and a DPDT switch to toggle to the desired display. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather not spend the money on another display or the time/effort to accommodate the mod, but I also don't want to leave out something that could be so easily accomplished now while this circuit is being worked on as opposed to some time in the future when it would be a whole new project. Or am I missing something and providing for the alternate display isn't really as simply as it appears (which wouldn't surprise me at all)?? Do any of you who have telemetry already on the main screen ever wish you could have it available elsewhere for some reason??? Just checking...

Nope, a separate screen at the top could be nice, but as the FrSky screen is not customizable and doesn't use the most useful data presentation IMO it's kinda worthless.

I only use the telemetry screen on the ground, while flying I rely on the voice output so I keep my eyes on the 'plane.

Re: Turnigy 9x comatose (not quite dead) after mods

Well, it's done. First I did the mods on the DHT module, then added the MOSI/MISO lines from the programming port up to the RX/TX pins on the DHT via a 4-pin header plug. Everything seems to light up and function as it should on the 9x, although I confess to not having performed any actual function tests yet with a receiver and servos and actual telemetry sensors.... I'll get to that soon, but first I need to get comfortable with the 9X's operation. Just D/L'ed the proper manual (had the Taranis one, just found the Open9X version) and have started reading, so it's onward & upward from here.

I did manage to take a couple photos, about the only one I thought was the least bit interesting showed how I installed the pair of 2K2 resistors into the RX/TX paths, as suggested by RCHacker. Rather than cross them over each other I chose a route that wouldn't have them interfering with each other. Fun stuff.

Thanks again for all your suggestions and encouragement.... I couldn't have gotten this done without your help. It's a great crew here, I'm really glad I found you guys. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions, hopefully they'll be the result of activities that are less traumatic :) Seeya...

My Tgy 9x arrived with a dead screen (lcd). It only came to life if I either left it in the sun or put it under a lamp (dangerous)
I stopped looking for Tgy parts as HK do not supply them but R2Hobbies (Eurgle) $15 inc post do, mines on the way I will update soon.

Could be just the contrast setting needing changing. If you flash er9x (or openTx), you have a value you can set to change the contrast.

Hello, deas T9x specialists! I would like to ask for some help regarding an issue happened with a TX just bought. Parcel arrived, been unpacked, tested - not working. Informed HK, they dont want to replace it because "you might connected battery inproperly". Decided not to waste my time.
Unscrewed, tested from MCU, no 3.3, no 5v - found 5v regulator faulty, so i have replaced the IC. Once opened i have installed the backlight too. Working, BUT...

When i have inserted the battery display turned ON immediatly. I have checked the phone jack - ppm is available even if the power switch is OFF.
Switch OFF - Display ON, Backlight OFF, PPM available
Switch ON - Display ON, Backlight ON, PPM not available on the trainer jack port.
Still something wrong but could not found where. Any ideas?
Do we have pcb layout somewhere (v2)?
Thanks for ideas in advance.

If you insert a jack in the trainer plug the radio will turn on with the switch off. That is how the radio is connected as a trainer and ppm will be available at the trainer port. If you turn the power switch on, the trainer port will become an input and expect a ppm signal.

ok, so there might be a faulty jack connector. I have tried to insert and remove the jack few times, but that havent solved the problem. All measurements were done without a jack inserted in. Just on the backplate PCB. What is the pin assignment of the jack connector on PCB side? Thanks.

question, how did you install the backlight? just used the connector that comes with it? if so, remove it and see if the problem is still there. The backlight, the way it comes, is known to cause problems.

with er9x (or opentx), it can be controlled via software using a FET transistor.

What backlight is it? Some HK backlights were known to have a short circuit on the little PCB that allows to connect it between the cable and board...
