Want the timer to count every second from 30seconds to zero

Post by GordySoar »

Hi Guys,
I fly USA Thermal Duration contests (F3J-ish) and we all use a 30 second count from our timers to the spot. The Taranis counts 30,20,10, 10, 10,10,10, etc. So first thing would be to fix the last 10 second count down but while you're at it, give us the option of every second from 30 seconds (or allow us to decide when the full count starts.

Thanks
Dazed and confused with the program system but learning.

Hi Rob, As I explained, I've got some experience in the hobby and did read about the 10 second hickup, but fixed or not it doesn't give us what we 'need'. Everything I read about the TananaSoarus was that it was soooo maluable, yet it seems it really isn't, unless each guy knows program language. The opensource chat has been going for over two years and yet something like flexibility in the timer doesn't seem to exist. Yes I know a .wav file could be used, but that just "voids" the value of the timer feature.
What kind of planes do you fly? I've flown RC saiplanes on 6 continents and most fields in the USA.. I try to fly every day, but lately its been hot here in Kentucky.
Thanks for your response in any case.

Given that a countdown time being shown on the Tx will never be the official time I think it can be disregarded for contest purposes and would be mainly used for training. The form of verbal feedback to the pilot by the (caller or) Tx is an individual thing and every pilot has his preferred way. I can't immediately see how the system designers could accommodate all possible variations even if just for the last 30 seconds of the countdown. And then there's the case of those pilots who prefer the count to go up rather than down.

I would be happy to record my own sound file for the 30 seconds (or even the whole 10 minutes for F3J) with my preferred style. Could this be accomodated? Would there be a way to automatically trigger the start of a personal 30 second file after a specified portion of the normal (pre-packaged) countdown had elapsed (say at 9 min 30 sec)?

Dear mpjf01 (?) ;-)

If the talking timer isn't programmable, then whats the point of having the function? We all can download JoJo's F3J practice timing, and yes is its possible to have the talking timer start when we want it to. And If you fly competition sailplanes, its unlikely you would ever count up in practice, because all we need to know is what is "left" of the task...but I'll admit I have heard of someone actually using count up, but believe it to be a myth like Bigfoot :-).
I have been waiting for this ability/function to show up on our TX's since I started flying task sailplanes and purchased my first Talking Timer ($15) and counts the last 10 seconds too :-(.

Amazing soaring weather in Kentucky this week, club flying tomorrow. Icon2 landing practice is the plan.

Just a little work yourself can give any timer you want.

Find or record a track of 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Set custom functions to 'play track 987 when timer = 29 and 19

The built in timer will kindly count the 30, 20 and 10,9,8... and your custom track and functions will fill in the rest.

How hard do we need to make it? Do the OTx programmers need to do everything for us?

That said, it would be nice to have a programmable timer that is more flexible than that currently available, but I would consider that to be a low priority.

For the moment I can't see a good solution for making everybody happy, except saying that you have to setup what you want with custom switches and custom functions.

The LUA scripts feature that will come in the next major release will help. You will enable the script you want on your models, and there should be no limit on your imagination!

Just a side note.. Not everybody fly gliders and not everybody use ONLY count down timer..
I, for example use a count up timer for my Internal combustion powered models as in my club we must log the flight time when flying IC powered models.

@ wingsounds13

How comfortable are you with the computer?

There is a good chance that you modify your private version of the firmware if you are able to compile the firmware on your computer.

In ER9x there is a short introduction of how to compile the fw (compile is he same for ER9x and OpenTx).
http://er9x.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/do ... torial.pdf.
It requires that you install some programs.

I have modified OpenTx (for the stock board of the TG9Y) to count down 30sec, 20sec, 15sec 10,9,8,...2,1,0, beep, beep .....
And as an alternativ, to count down 30,29,28,.....2,1,0, beep, beep, ....
There is only a small modification in the code required. But then it is fixed and not selectable in the menus.

there is also another solution:
set a custom switch
cs1 a<x "timer1 < 30" and cs2 duration 0.5
cs2 TIM 0.5 0.5

then in custom function
cs1 play value " timer1" do not repeat

no programming skills required

custom function left there from previous try...
the idea was to avoid "seconds" using a gvar decreased every second,,

Because for example on Sundays and holidays we are only allowed 120 minutes of motor running time.
People that fly electro must also write the name and frequency.. In my case 2,4 Ghz..

Some hunters got P'ed off that they can't go there anymore kill the deers and the rabits and took the club to court because of the noise.. Well there's no houses around, so I Guess that the noise makes the little creatures run and hide.. But the club won the court thingy and we only have to log the IC powered motor time on the book. Not a big problem for any of us. It's a bit like real aviation really ;)

But the fact is that the animals don't run away from the field. In fact they come to the field. It seems that they know that they are safe there..

Sorry about the off topic.

Deers... little creatures ?

Many year ago I was used to fly inside a true airport, with ICAO fence around: very often rabbits were freely running near me , showing no fear. The hunters were outside the fence, trying to shot birds flying around: seldom, I was hit by small lead falling, not harmful but quite scaring.

Tell that to my buddies 172. It was totaled, the deer ran off. It's a bitch when you've done everything perfect, the stall indicator just starts to go off as your mains touch ground and a brown flash Flashes in front of your prop and makes it all the way to the wingtip where it slews you straight to the right for a nice, almost cartwheel.

As a highlight, we did have the tail mounted on the hobby shop.
