Taranis X9D wont power up

Post by Wrongway »

Hello Everyone,

For some reason my X9D stopped to power up. It also is dead when using the USB cable.
Computer does not recognize the radio and no display. I feel this has been covered before
but I can not find thread. There does not seem to be any 3.3V at R76. Switch board has been replaced!
Any help appreciated!
Thanks

If you don't get any response with the power off and you just connect the USB cable, then it is likely either the main processor has failed, or the main 3.3V regulator has failed. If no 3.3V at R76, then the main regulator is the suspect. Did you check for 3.3V with just the USB plugged in?

Hi Mike,

Pleased to meet you!
On pin-1 (C56) of the regulator I have 5.1V. with USB, 7.4V battery!
At R76 I have .67v. battery or USB. Is it possable that C64 is shorted and pulling the regulator down?
I think you are correct about the regulator being bad. I can not read any numbers on the regulator even with my 5x
magnafier glasses. Maybe TI 5401?
Thanks

Probably, it is shown on the circuit as a TPS5401. It is a switching regulator.
Check R76 and R77. R76 should be 12K, R77 should be 2K4. These are the potential divider feeding the output voltage back to the regulator. At their junction you should have 0.55V, this connects to U3 pin 7.
You might also check the inductor L3 is not open circuit. This connects between pin 10 of U3 and the 'top' of R76.
C64 being shorted is always a possibility.

Hi Mike,

I think i will have to pull the resistors to get accurate reading.
In circuit I get 7.5k on both. On U3 pin 7 I have .17V. L3 seems to be good. I lifted one end on C64.
It checks good. Are the resistors the 0603 size or smaller? If I need to order a regulator then I might as well
order a few of R76,R77 12k and 2.4k to meet the min order.
Thank You!

Something could be pulling the voltage down. It might be worth measuring the current being drawn to see if it is too high.

Hi Mike,

I am not sure how to measure the current draw? Honestly im not very good to desolder or solder smt devices.
Not sure if i should attempt a repair or just buy a main board.

Can you measure the current from the battery itself?
Buying a replacement main board is not a bad way of going, should get you back running.

My meter is kind of a cheap one, its showing about 30ma.
Seems really low but then again the screen is blank like nothing is coming on.

Just registered you said you get 7.5K when measuring both R76 and R77. Since R77 should be 2.4K, this is bad, you should not get a reading over 2.4K.
So, thinking on this, it may well be R77 is faulty, or not soldered in place properly.
If R77 has gone open circuit (or a very high resistance), then it would explain what you are seeing.
I would suggest at least:
1. Re-solder both sides of R77, then re-measure the resistance of it.
2. If you don't then see 2.4K (or a bit less), then remove R77 and measure it out of circuit.
3. Replace R77 with a new resistor. The original is 2.4K 1% tolerance.

Hi Mike,

I just replaced R76 and R77. Radio now powers up just fine!
All three models are still in memory! All is great like nothing happened!
Even took my ST models Fox out for a flight. Thanks so much for everything.
I really didnt think I was going to be able to fix it but thanks to you I did! :P

R87 looks to be "Not fitted" as it isn't present on my prototype X9D.
I have a circuit for the X9D but it is under a NDA from FrSky so I can't publish it.

ahh thankyou mike that makes sence that i have empty spot could not be sure that i had not had it stick to kapton tape i used to protct when removing cpu .

all came to life after changing cpu so my friend will be a happy bunny for xmas

many thanks mike

martin

p.s
he has some gimbals out of a horus x12 that he wants to put into this x9d , and while i dont se a problem makeing them fit , one is 5v and other is 3v power

do you know if they can be made to work with an x9d plus if the hall effect sensors just give a resistance as orig pots would do , i was hoping they would just work if given right voltage and calibration but they seem to have noise in signal when i tested the idea

the things i get dragged into over holidays :)

I don't think they will work. The Horus appears to provide a 5V supply and a 2.5V reference to the gimbals, and use 0-2.5V as the voltage output range. The X9D+ only provides a 3.0V supply, and 0-3.0V output range.

thanks for info mike,
ive found some info reguarding thed x9e and these gimbals and converter boards for that radio , i think it was switching supply i was using causing issues on my tests with noise , do you no best place on a x9d-plus board where i can tap a clean 5v supply
this vid shows how it was done on a x9e , time of video starting is where he points out where 5v
https://youtu.be/RavX97c3a-k?t=387

where would be best place on x9d+

Unfortunately the X9D+ doesn't have a 5V supply anywhere, it uses 3.3V for the Audio where the X9E uses the 5V.

Update:

I found the same assembly on the radio board. The Value of elements R38 and R39 are both ok (~2K). So I think, that x9r has the same suply voltage circuit as x9d+ and the same values for R76 and R77. I already ordered some parts and let you know if replacing the elements helps.

Hello Mike,

I have the same issue as Wrongway with my x9d+ - 7.5K at both R76 and R77 as wel as no 3.3V at R76. I mesured 30.7K and 9.9K out of circuit respectivelly, what seems to be possible in order to some thincable power distribution differences between x9d and x9d+ you mentioned in this topic.

What would you suggest? What should I try next?

Regards,
Shukhrat

Hello everyone!

I had the same issue on my taranis x9d plus - short circuit on 3v3 line. I removed the mcu and the short circuit was gone. Then I soldered brand new mcu and tried connecting taranis to the PC. In device manager tab, I see the STM32 Bootloader, but I can't flash the new firmware with Open TX Companion.
The error I get is:
image.png
I have tried to flash firmware with different PCs, with different versions of  windows but still no luck. I've used the latest version of Open TX Companion and I also tried the older one.

I tried to run Impulse RC driver fixer and also tried with zadig.
Did I miss something? Has anybody any idea what can I do?

Thanks!

I followed this thread as I have a similar problem. While updating the firmware on my G-RX8 using the X9D+ 2019, the TX complained by starting to flash the display. I tried switching it off, it would not. I ended up disconnecting the battery. I disconnected the Rx from the Tx, reconnected the battery and could not get the Tx to switch on. There was also a strong smell of burnt components from the Tx. On examining my Tx, I cannot see any reference to component numbers on the board. Can anyone give me a guide?
Thanks in advance
I should add that I have replaced the RF board and all works ok, I would just like to repair the faulty board ( i am a retired, experienced electronic engineer who can handle a soldering iron !!!!)

Re: Taranis X9D wont power up

Post by ValentAir »

Hello good people!
I've had the exact same problem with my Taranis x9d plus se 2019 like "billymo47"
The problem occurred when I tried to flash X8R receiver by using the 3 bottom pins (5V, Ground, Signal pins) in the JR bay at the back of the Taranis - I used a modified servo cable connecting the X8R to the pins in the JR bay. During connecting the cable to the pins, a smell of burnt component occurred as I may have shortened some of the 3 pins.
After that, my Taranis would not turn on unless: 1) I unplug the battery, --> 2) press and hold the power button and 3) plug the battery back. After performing all these steps, Taranis will power on as normal but would not power off unless I disconnect the battery. When battery is re-connected, Taranis will keep on rebooting without being able to properly power on and load its software unless I do the above 3 steps.
How can I fix this problem? From what I understand reading these posts, I need either to replace components on the board or replace the board itself.
I am not very electric-savvy, therefore I will not venture to change components on the board. I'd like to change the entire board itself.
Could you please advice me which board to purchase from FrSKy? They sell the following 2 on their website:
1) Board with Internal RF Board: https://www.horusrc.com/us/frsky-tarani ... board.html
or
2) Main Board: https://www.horusrc.com/us/frsky-tarani ... board.html

Thank you!
