Upgrade a new Taranis X9D? Please explain reasons.

Post by ThompsonJim »

I am totally new to Taranis and have one coming in the mail.
When I receive it, I will be faced with the question of what firmware/software to use. Leave it as supplied or upgrade to "OpenTX 2.2", or similar?
I have no information upon which to make this decision.
Is it a reasonable question for me to ask here:
1.What criteria is involved and,
2.What advantages will the upgrade offer me?

I only fly powered aircraft (internal combustion and electric) and slope/thermal gliders.
Possibly the most complex set up I will use is a 6 servo glider.
I don't need multiple flight modes and such as I am not a competitive flyer.

I hope someone reading can educate me, or send me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Jim.

In the past FrSky has taken a copy of the source for OpenTx and made a version that the OpenTx developers did not consider ready for release made some changes and shipped it with new transmitters.
They did not provide any release notes or even the exact date that they took the source.
This made it suspect to many of us...or at least to me.
So that is one reason to consider updating.

New features and bug fixes are being continuously developed by the OpenTx developers.
The incremental changes are some times very desirable...and sometime annoying (like the when the sound files and many others names changed from 8 characters to 6.)

Flight modes and 16/32 channels have been available for as long as I can remember. I have a very early X9D, and fairly early release of the QX7. The Qx7 has become my goto tx. I keep both up to the current release 2.2.3.
Sort of a pioneer.

Famous quote in the West of Us..."Pioneers get arrows in the ass."
OpenTx from the developers has not got me with an arrow yet.

There are some instances where the nonFCC version OpenTx has limited some capabilities in related to D8 receivers and changing to the FCC vesion has allowed the D8 protocols tp be used by the LBT txs.
I only fly electric and gliders. In the USA.

Knowing where you reside and might make upgrading more desirable.
If you bought from Aloft it will most likely come with the latest release sanctioned by the OpenTx developers, 2.2.3. Other vendors vary.
YMMV

You can also update your Taranis with ErSky9x. It runs on all Taranis radios. I have been using it since many years without any problems..

Just my two cents.

At the moment I think both FrOs and OpenTx provide you with firmware to run your Transmitter flawless, but a big plus for me with OpenTx is the huge fan base.

So the internet is full of instruction video's and your sure to get an answer if your in doubt.

I think the user group of FrOs is much smaller.

And I really like the endless possibilities of OpenTx. Learning curve might be a little steap. But once you reach the top it's so great.

FrOS is unrelated, that's only for Horus radios anyway.

It is presumably easier for supporters, if newbees use the latest release too. Advanced users will always use the latest release ;)

That brings in another choice for which I, as a beginner, am ill equipped to make.
Any clues to assist me in this regard Joao?
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Dean. I am in Australia; I just filled in my location after reading your post.

Is there a multi-quote function on these forums?

That is one persuasive reason to do so Carbo!
Thanks,

And also, thanks to Kilrah and tonnie.

I don't have a Taranis, I use my old and wonderful ;) fully modded 9x radios :) ;) with Ersky9x of course :D
But there are others here that use Ersky9x on Taranis and I am sure they could help you. Mike, the Ersky9x developer, also uses it in a Taranis radio, as far as I know. Ersky9x is powerful, easy(er) to navigate with its index menus, and allow for some cool hardware mods. More switches and stuff like that :)

That is one very persuasive reason for me to use it. I suppose if I don't like it, (or more likely, am unable to use it due to my lack of programming skills), I can change to another system?
I will search out and read up on the "cool hardware mods" you mention.
Thanks.

Ok. I will do some reading. If you can recommend an introductory site for the beginner, please post a link for me.
Thanks again,

Jim.
