Connect Taranis to PC USB

Post by Raythegreat »

Hi,

My Taranis X9D + connects very well to USB port on the PC only in bootloader mode.
When I'm in bootloader mode I can access SD drive and make firmware updates no problem. All is good.

However, when I'm not in the bootloader mode and power on the Taranis then plug the USB cable, the USB does not work.
I want to try the FPV Freerider simulator with Taranis.
The problem is that the USB driver was not installed successfully on the first time. I have windows 7.

Please advise how I can fix this and make Taranis be recognized by the USB PC while NOT in bootloader mode?

Thanks

I'm talking of the setting for USB in radio settings since that's where you choose what the port does when powered on.
It looks to be set to Serial when that's not what you're after.

Kilrah,

Thanks for your support.
Where is this USB settings?
I have in radio radio setup -> hardware -> Serial port is at OFF. Is this what you are talking about?
How do I set the USB in the radio?

Hi Kilrah,

OK I got it and it works. Great support. Thanks.
USB in radio setup must be set to joystick. Did not know that. It is great.

Yes is does. I changed it directly on the Taranis itself and it worked. I can now run FPV freerider.
I will check in companion what each options do.

Thanks rdeanchurch.

Hi,

To continue on this subject of USB mode, what do theses options do?

1- ask to connect. I can imagine the answer to this one but I have never tried it.
2- Joystick. I know the answer of this one, Taranis becomes a joysick emulator.
3- USB mass storage. Problably will enable all the SD contents and firmware drive? like in bootloader mode?
4- USB serial. No idea about that one. What is it?

1, 2, and 3 are correct, if you imagine when you connect your tx pops a menu and asks you to select Joystick or Mass Storage. I think 3 only allows you to see SD, but you can write firmware with the correct USB driver...??
I've only used it to manipulate the SD card contents

4. I also have no idea, an interesting question. Hope we see an answer here.

Hi everyone! Sorry for bump this past year post, but since my question is related, I rather post it in here.
I have a Taranis X9D+ and I'm being using it since 1 week or less, I've being using it in the simulator fpr around 5 hours by now, but, the transmitter seems like never get discharged. I was expecting to charge it as soon as it reach 50% of battery life but still on top. Does the X9D get power to charge through the PC USB ports? I highly doubt it but…

It doesn't charge the battery but yes it can pull operating power from USB. Also when you set up a model with no transmission as you would for a simulator power consumption is very low.

So that explain why my battery is "not losing" charge.
Thank you.

Good day folks. I have a related question to this thread. I have just purchased a 2019 Taranis X9D plus SE. It arrived without a battery and charger. I purchased a 2,200 mah LiPo and a LiPo charger from my (not so local) hobby shop. It fits good, and works well. I also just purchased Real Flight 9 to learn how to fly RC electric gliders (think night radian). I followed all sorts of youtube videos to connect it to computer, and set it up for basic controls. It works awesome. QUESTION: When plugging Taranis into HP laptop USB, the voltage on the radio display has gone from 7.7 to 8.1 over about an hours use. This leads me to think that it may be engaging in a charging function from the laptop USB. I was told I can't allow this by the local ish hobby shop. Other places in this thread, it states the radio does NOT charge from USB in laptop, and that it just accepts operating voltage. Please advise. I want to use it to train with, but I'm at a loss on how to do that without it taking a potentially damaging charge through the radio from the laptop. I think it has blue tooth as well, but that didn't connect with laptop. it wouldn't discover it correctly. Thank you

USB charging is new to the 2019 version which is newer than anything prior in this thread, and is designed to charge a 2s lipo as mentioned in the manual.

Hopefully its ok to post in this thread.

I can load it in bootloader, and connection seems fine.

Have been able to connect my Taranis to this computer earlier, to fly simulator.

Recently i having big trouble getting a connection.

Running TX 2.2.3
USB mode = Joystick (HID)
Image
Tried to uninstall the FrSky Taranis Joystick under Devices
Also switched cables to 3 different types without luck.

Any tips on how to proceed from here?
