Antenna replacement

Post by Koarl »

Hello guys!

I just broke one antenna from a X8r with pcb-antennas. I have one spare antenna from a D8r. Is it ok to use it as a replacement? Does the rx work correctly with one pcb-antenna and one normal?

Thanks!

I researched that topic a bit, should not be a problem to use two different antennas in one rx. But I would feel a lot safer, if one of you experts could confirm this.

I would try to find the right antenna. I believe you will lose range if you use the D8R antenna. And you will lose the benefit of antenna diversity because this antenna has less gain than the original..
In other words, I wouldn't do it.. :)

Check "alofthobbies" for buying a replacement antenna for your receiver.

The x8r receivers I bought early on from Aloft came with the pc antennas soldered on. I sent them back asking for a whisker version. Later ones I ordered from Aloft came with the pc antennas installed and whisker antennas in the package. The antennas were now on connectors.
I swapped out the pc and used the whiskers to better fit my smaller planes.

Typical line of sight flying hasn’t caused any low rssi warnings (42). My lowest is 49 to 51 with 51 being the norm lowest. Typical is 71 range with higher and lower from that.
Flying only fixed wing and staying under 400ft altitude and less than 1000 ft out works for me.
I also read all the many posts about pc antenna mounting to maintain max gain, what side up, and separation angles. Seemed a lot to worry about.
I just separate the whiskers and make one vert and one horiz if possible.
Each flying installation and application is different for our needs so I’m not saying I’m correct, just that for my type of flying, whiskers work well.

my suggestion is to replace PC and/or whiskers antennas with dipoles. Aloft also sells them. this is what I have on most my receivers, specially my DIY ones.

Interesting thoughts, thanks!

The antenna looks similar to that one:

In general I fly gliders up to 4m wingspan and never had troubles with low signal.

This can help to measure how well different antennas are working: (http://www.immersionrc.com/downloads/ma ... Manual.pdf)
