Turnigy 9xr Pro + FrSky XJT + D4R-II won't bind

Post by n1trog3n »

Greetings everyone!
Guys can somebody help me to solve my problem please?
I have Turnigy 9xr Pro + FrSky XJT + D4R-II and they won't bind! The switches on XJT module are 1-ON, 2-OFF(D-mode).
I follow these steps:
1. Turn on the D4R-II receiver (jumper between ch 3-4) by powering ch1 (holding f\s button) and lights become solid green and red,
2. Turn on the transmitter (holding f\s button) and lights start to blink.
3. At that moment when lights on Tx are blinking, lights on Rx start to blink too.
4. Waiting 10sec. and then turn off both of them.
5. When I try to power Tx and Rx - nothing happens. Lights on the Tx are flashing green and red and on the Rx blinking only red light. Everything suggests that it is not bind.

May be I do something wrong?

PS with DJT module everything incl. telemetry works fine!
PPS The firmware on my turnigy is V.1108-Mike (26.06.2015 ersky9x-r218 REVB-X)

Thanks in advance.

You do not need nor want a jumper for binding on a D4R-II.

Where and when did you purchase your XJT? If you bought it in Europe in 2015 it won't support D receivers as delivered anymore due to new European regulations.

My friend gave it to me for free. The date on the Tx is 14/05/08.
Tried to bind d4r-ii without a jumper and nothing have changed.

With the 'PRO and a XJT, you don't need to set the switches on the XJT.
Set the protocol to PXX, and for the D4R-II, choose D8 rather than D16.
Switch the receiver on in 'bind' mode, then select the BIND option just down from the D16/D8 option on the menu.

The question is, when was the XJT purchased, rather then when ws the Tx purchased.

By the way. How I can bind xjt and x8r? Step by step, please. I'll really appreciate your help.
Im asking cause it wont bind too.
I set PXX, 16ch. Then i select bind mode from the menu and it starts to beep.
Then i am just trying to power x8r with f/s button pressed and nothing happens

Mike,

Thanks for the answer. I've tried to do what you've said but nothing happened. d4r just flash solid green and red, Turnigy is just beeping....no signs that they are bound

It is possible your friend updated the firmware on the XJT to the EU version, can you ask them?
When did they give you the radio?

It is possible to revert the firmware on the XJT. What revision number and date is on the Version menu?

No, He didn't update the firmware on XJT. I've got my Turnigy 9XR Pro at least two years ago(just when Hobbyking has released it).

Do you have any other receivers you can try binding with the XJT?

Mike.
Yes. I have tried to bind it with x8r and got the same result. Dip switches on XJT were off, I pressed the f/s button, turned on the Turnigy. Then I pressed f/s button on the x8r and lights started to blink as they were bound. I powered them off.
And when I powered them again Turnigy start to beep like "beep, beep, beep, beep, beep etc.", red light on x8r was blinking. But sometimes the green light was blinking too. I do not know why this happened.
If I select bind from the menu (protocol is PXX, 16CH) It is just beeping and thats it.

I also have V8FR receiver...may be it will work, I'll try to bind it today...

Your first post suggests the XJT is binding to the D4R-II by pressing the button on the XJT, the Rx should flash the red LED when it binds.
From all the other information, it sounds to me that thre is a problem in the XJT with the PPM/PXX signal not getting through. If a DJT in the same radio works, then the radio is OK as far as the PPM signal is concerned.

Could it be PXX only? I managed to bind my first D8R-II PLUS receiver to my XJT(D8 mode), but then changed protocol to PXX. It kept working, but I was not able to bind another identical D8R-II PLUS receiver afterwards( no problem with the DHT nor the DHT-U). I will try again soon , switching off PXX and try to bind with the dip switches in the correct position in D8 mode again... apparently more people seem to have similar problems.

Mike, is there any change to make the XJT work? Maybe I can update the firmware somehow? Is there is a chance to do that, can you write an instruction step by step, please? ;)

Check the following please. Change the protocol to PPM, then check if the output is set to "full drive" or "open drain". If it is "open drain", change it to "full drive", then go back to PXX and try the XJT again.

The 9XR-PRO includes a facility to upgrade the firmware on the XJT. This is "maintenance mode", accessed by powering the Tx on while holding the two horizontal trims APART. If the above doesn't work, we can go into this in more detail.

Checked. It was full drive.

Looks like we have to try to update XJT. Where i can get the correct firmware for XJT?

The non-Europe firmware is here: http://www.frsky-rc.com/download/view.p ... rmware-XJT.

Download this, then put it in the FIRMWARE directory on the SD card.
Remove the XJT from the radio.
Then start the radio holding the horizontal trims APART.

The main problem you will have is connecting/powering the XJT at the correct time, which after the firmware starts looking for the device to upgrade. I think you should be OK just plugging the XJT into the radio at that point.

I've only updated an XJT module from a Taranis, which switches the power to the module at the correct time.

The other way would be to have a plug to socket cable with a switch in the power wire.
The SPort connection on the back of the XJT is a 5V output from a regulator inside the XJT, so you cannot connect the radio power to that, you MUST connect the radio power to the 5-way socket the module uses when plugged in to the radio. Note: Connecting from the module bay pins to the XJT for this, only need the bottom 3 connections, and these go directly, not crossed, as it is really the same as plugging the module in to the radio.

Mike, are you sure about this?? I think other people had problems because they plugged the module to the radio with it ON??

I've just plugged my XJT into a powered on 9XR-PRO (twice), with no problems.
Just make sure the pins are lined up OK.

Mike, first of all thanks for your answer.

I've flashed my XJT with no problems, thanks!
But again no binding. May be I'm doing smth wrong?

1. Power on Rx with f/s button pressed (lights on the Rx are both flash solid)
2. Power on Tx, go to the model setup->Protocol
a) PPM2 Startchan Follow
b) PPM2 Channels 8CH
c) Proto PXX RxNum 0
d) Type D8
e) Country Ame
f) 1st Chan 1
3. Then I press Bind in the menu. Turnigy starts to beep and vibrating and thats it.

PS I've tried both firmwares 2015-01-28 and 2013-07-25 (for XJT which one is correct or better?)
PPS maybe I have to flash Turnigy with other firmware? Do I have to move switches somehow on the XJT?

It drives me mad that it doesn't want to work.....

Try setting the switches on the XJT to 'D' mode and binding using the button on the XJT. I believe this binds, but you still get no control.
If that is the case, then I believe you have a problem with the PPM/PXX signal, probably inside the XJT module, since I believe you said a DJT works fine.

Yes, with DJT everything works super fine.

XJT binds when I set switches in D mode (1 is on, 2 is off), then when i power everything again Rx flashes with red light as there is no signal between rx and tx.

Summed up under the above is my XJT broken and there is no chance to fix it? :(

I think it might be! :(
You could open it up, just 2 screws to undo, and have a look to see if the top pin of the connector isn't connecting on the PCB.

Last couple of checks:
1. Use a pin, and slide it in to the module connector on the top and next sockets. Make sure there is some resistance as you push it in. This checks the socket connector isn't broken. By doing this on the next socket down, you will get the feel of what you should expect on the top socket.
2. Examine the PCB. There is a fine track that goes from the top socket pad straight up the board to a (tiny) resistor. Check this track looks unbroken, and that the resistor, and nearby components look properly soldered. You may need to use some magnification to to examing these.
