Taranis and DSM2 mods
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
The main circuitry difference is that they went from a linear voltage regulator to a switching mode one.
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
Thank you Daedalus66, I already have the orange tx antenna problem solved using a DM9 case cover and a servo case as pictured.
As far as firmware update I am in US and HK only has the programmer in China and takes like 40 days to get here, I might give it a try but they are out of stock as of now so it will take even longer.
In regards to the BEC is is also out of stock in the Global warehouse and US warehouse as well so I wont have a lot of options right now plus I rate when HK makes you pay for shipping twice not letting you combine warehouse purchases.
Ideally I would not like to cannibalize my second "defective"orange TX but if is going to cost me some extra money and have to wait a long time I rather cannibalize my "bad" orange module.
As far as failsafe goes, I do not mind not having it, but model match is something that I miss.
Thank you Kilrah, do you know if would this circuitry change makes any difference while using the DX5e rf unit?

@Hawk600
If you have a USBtoTTL adapter with Prolific PL2303 chip you need only a schottky diode to update the orange TX.
I've done it in the following way a few minutes ago:
The firmware and howto can be downloaded at HK (files tab on the product page).

which software do you use to flash it, and what chip did you choose?

Thank you Klaus!
I have a prolific adapter that I was using to transfer data from an old magellan gps but as far as I recall it is USB to serial so I dont think is going to work

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I found those on ebay:

without cables: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PL2303HX-USB-To ... 2585dc26a1
Do you think they will work?
It will be great if I can do that without waiting 40+ days...also +1 on jhsa question.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
@Joao: I used the software that is provided by HK, no chip to select.
@Hawk600: If it's RS232 level then it won't work so easy. You then need to invert the signals and convert them to 5V level.
Those adapters you pointed to are exactly the same as mine.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
Can a FTDI be used? providing that we use the diode?

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
Unfortunately the provided software does not recognize a FTDI device.
Works only with PL2303.
Diode is needed because of the one-wire-bus.

Awesome Kal, thank you specially for attaching the files! I will buy one of these adapters and try the update.KAL wrote:@Joao: I used the software that is provided by HK, no chip to select.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
So Kal just makeing sure I understood it correctly, your adapter is RS232 level like the ones i linked first and I would need the diode following the USB2TTL.png picture you first posted.
Would an adapter like this one that doesnt look to be RS232 work better maybe?

Thank you again!

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
All three adapters should work fine. As said before, the first 2 adapters are equal to that I used.
Many serial TTL-Adapters are named as RS232, but RS232 means voltages between -15V (logical "1") and +15V (logical "0").
TTL on the other hand means voltages between 0V ("0") and 5V ("1"). So when it's TTL it's not RS232.
What we need is USB to TTL serial adapter.
The diode is needed to be able to send and receive on one wire.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
You're missing the point on failsafe. As I said, it's a function of the receiver not the transmitter (by definition, as it only kicks in when the receiver is not getting a signal). A DSM receiver automatically has failsafe, whether you want it or not. In the basic form, just the throttle channel (CH1) will go to the position at time of bind.Hawk600 wrote: As far as failsafe goes, I do not mind not having it, but model match is something that I miss.
Some types of receiver (including some DSM) can be set to preset positions for all channels, while some can be set to output no signal to servos on loss of input signal.
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I built the DIY module using the dx5e module. It is working great and I have about 10 flights on it. What is the maximum amount of channels the dx5e module can output? I'm looking at getting some of the lemonrx recievers but the ones I am interested in are 7 channels.
thanks,
Brendin

Taranis and DSM2 mods
The module used by the DX4e, DX5e and D6i can handle only 6 channels.
A 7-channel receiver will work with a 6-channel transmitter (but of course will only output the first six channels).
Are you thinking of the Lemon gyro stabilized receiver? The new V3 version will work fine (except for in flight gain, which is on channel 8).

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I did a DIY module with a MPL4DSM module, but It won´t bind to any receiver. After a little research I found something about that Spektrum had recently changed some codes for their small transmitter modules that are frequently being pulled for diy projects.
Have you experienced anything like this? Do you think is possible to modify the software to suit the updated versions of the low power dsm modules?

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I'm having this problem with newer OpenTx for Taranis images with my DIY DSM2 module. Works fine with opentx-taranis-haptic-en.2.0.7.bin. But when I flash with opentx-taranis-haptic-en.2.0.10 or opentx-taranis-haptic-en.2.0.11 it fails.einarak wrote:I did a DIY module with a MPL4DSM module, but It won´t bind to any receiver. So try flashing an older version.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
Would you try to download again your firmware? We changed the compiler today.
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I have the same problem, external Spektrum module works fine in 2.08 and does not work on 2.011. I have downloaded the newest firmware
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
At what time? It was updated today.
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
2.011 Created 11 September 2014, 23:01:02
Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
Mine dsm2 module doesn´t work either on the 2.011 firmware. On start up and when bind mode is entered, the module blinks the led for a split second, then nothing happens. So it just looks like the transmitter newer turns on the module.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I didnt want to ask such a silly question here, but is there a way to retro-grade my firmware back to one that worked? I dont have any of the files existing, would need to download.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
A user confirmed that it works now:
https://github.com/opentx/opentx/issues ... t-55364694
So you just need to re-download your Taranis firmware and flash again

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I can confirm that the most recent 2.0.11 works, too. (opentx-taranis-lua-en.bin)
I did not try anything between 2.0.5 and 2.0.11 though.
For details please see attached picture.
Thank you very much for resolving this issue!

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
Still not working, I´m starting to think its a hardware issue with my module build... :/
