FrSky officially X9D announcement

FrSky now officially announced the new X9D transmitter . it is called ...

Taranis

... and it is powered by 'OPEN 9XD' - seems to be a modified openTX FW?! :D

Looks like the known JR-radios - very handy formfactor - and the 'tech-specs' sounds very well - I'm curious for the (street) price.

Best regards,
Michael

It's actually the main trunk of openTx, the logo was just updated this morning ;)

Some of the early dev talk was here:

Someone who is good with those things should write a article on diydrones.com

The UAV and multicopter people will lap it up I'm sure.

Transparent bidirectional high speed telemetry link, opensource firmware, long range radio option, receivers with digital sbus output, voice output would be my personal highlights for UAV like applications.

I piped those images (WTF web design!?) though a free online OCR. With mixed results.

Up to 16 channels
Four ball bearing gimbals
Two-module two-frequency system
one Internal module plus one external an module slot
Three selectable modes
D8 (8ch telemetry)
DI6(16ch full duplex telemetry)
LH12(12ch non-telemetry long range. up to 3 times further]
Super lower latency (approx. 1/3 of current systems) and higher precision
Receiver Match , RSSI (receiver signal strength)
Smart Part , Big backlit LCD (212X64), USB, SD Card
Audio speech outputs (values, alarms, settings, etc.)

Smart Port
Smart Port (S. Port) is a signal wire lull duplex digital transmission interface developed by FrSky

Opening sound should be a thunder clap.

The hex cap screws are a nice touch -- but does that close up of the gimbal give anybody else reason for concern. Anybody handled one that can say how it feels?

I'm waiting for Horus. Don't want just a mere God. I want the king of them

Plus it has 2 screens, a rotary encoder, and the prototype looks really good.. ;)

May have to wait some time longer.

The x9d has been majorly upgraded from its original plans for launch. (that's why there has been a delay)

I think the x12d could be at least a year or more off :-)

Hi Scott,

I use a Graupner/JR MX22 and I am pretty shure that with hands on I 'feel at home' along with the Taranis (another part is the more flexible but complex FW 8-) ).

I also own a Turnigy 9XR but this transmitter is NOT so handy (some switches are badly reachable!)

Best regards,
Michael

It doesn't matter. I'm sure it's worth the wait..
Also if it's still about an year away, I can reduce my daily savings from 1 Euro a day, to 50 cents a day

Until then I will just enjoy my 9x's.. I invested too much time in them to put them on a shelf right know. Want to fly the hell out of these two now.
When I get the "Horus" radio, at least one of the 9x (if I don't use it) will go in a glass container and to a special place in the living room.
I think the 9x found it's place in history, thanks to some amazing comunity.. ours!! ;) 8-)

Sounds good to me... I wonder if they might fit our 9x's? ... If that is the case, then we could buy the X9D and rip out the gimbals from them to use on our real transmitters. :)

They didn't say they would not send spare parts ;)

Does anyone know, if there is a dummy into the module slot at delivery or is the module slot 'naked'?

No idea.

For me... The logical thing is to install an orange rx.

That way I can fly the few dsm planes I have in it.

I suspect that I will install an internal antenna mod for this :-)

Hm, the module slot MAY carry a second HF-transmitter-module. The Taranis has already an internal FrSky HF-transmitter part built in. For me it may be 'oversized' to bring the antenna of the SECOND HF-module into the transmitter :|

So for the first start or anyone who has no needs for a second module it would be fine if the module slot will be NOT 'naked' - it would be a kindly thing if FrSky puts a dummy into the slot.

Looking good.. Is the travel case of good quality? Are they going to sell the gimbal assembly as a seperate item?

I wonder what hacks/modifications people will want or do.. Head tracker input? Another joystick unit? Push button switch on the joystick(s)?

The list goes on.. Will I buy one... Probably not as I have invested a lot of time and effort into the 9x.. If I was starting out before I bought into the 9X.. I would have jumped at this. :)

Must say that I love my Spektrum DX6i with the scroll wheel.. Programming is so fast with that. Frsky have missed a trick there..

I did specifically ask if the gimbals will be available as spare parts, the answer was YES.
I had a problem with one of the pots on the prototype unit (not the type that will be in the production unit). I've fitted a gimbal from a 9x (thanks Rob), fits without any problem.
I'm getting to like the stick scrolling I added to er9x/ersky9x. It is quite quick to use. I'm looking to see if it can be added to openTX for the Taranis, but I'm not as familiar with the menu code of openTX for the Taranis, it doesn't have left/right keys!

Mike.

If you wait for the next one "HORUS" it might have all that, and maybe be a tray radio ;)
I'm waiting for it too. The first radio I had (and still have) here in Germany was a Graupner mc-16 tray radio and I was flying using my thumbs
I'm already training to fly tray radio on the sim.. when frsky releases it I'll be ok with it.. ;)

Yes.. The tray format is the best thing around. You can have a whole bunch of switches and sliders on it with a comfortable layout. As for thumbs flying.. That is frowned upon and (imo) doesn't give you precise control. So it is a good idea to make use of the top of the sticks to place a switch on them. It's a shame that it seems to be a European thing. I suppose that (stiring pot warning) America is to blame for the toy layouts we have now. Kraft and other companies like them are partly to blame. The Japanese followed that up and hooked America and the UK..

My best radio was a tray one. It was made by Simprop it was the SAM system which had plug in modules. So you could have a number of them set up as you wanted. No messing around with menus on small screens. It was all in front of you and you could see at a glance all the settings. :)

Shouldn't hijack this thread as this is all about the X9D and not about tray format vs toy format TX's

I await to see the price of the new kit when it gets to the UK.. Along with the availability of it and the gimbal assembly + pots. I have a sneaking feeling that the price in UK pounds will be close to the dollar price from UK sellers.

The solution for you could be 'PotScroll' - it's available in er9x and openTX ;)

Stickscroll is available in er9x. That could be way better than potscroll.. ;)

Right. I will try to add the stickscroll to openTx this week. Could be available for all boards.
