Taranis and Bad X8R?

Post by marzubus »

Update: the solder pins inside the receiver were NOT all soldered. frsky have confirmed this. This problem was very temperamental and especially evident in cold temperatures . Please check your RC units!

I have a TBS Discovery with a FrSy X8R on it, and a Taranis X9D running latest firmware.

I seem to have a strange issue at random where I will be unable to control the RX after a powerup. A reboot of the X8R resolves the issue, though I sometimes lose telemetry after a while and never gain control of the RX again.

I made a video reproducing the issue with ONLY a battery on the RX.
After the receiver has been off for a while, I powered it up and it is struggling to talk to the Taranis, Also it doesnt respond to input from the Taranis, after I reboot the X8R, it will work normally. It only happens when the x8r has been off for a couple of minutes. You can see the RSSI signal is really c**p until I reboot the x8r

Looks like your receiver is defective and should be exchanged under warranty. Do you have another receiver to confirm the problem is not on the radio?

Unfortunately I do not have any other FrSky receiver. I will order another one to test and then RMA either the TX or the RX depending on the outcome.

I tore open the RX and I found two completely unsoldered pins on the daughterboard!!!

Also extremely poor alignment of the U1 chip (EEPROM?) chip.

The pins are only mechanical support, so this shouldn't be a problem. Someone has definitely bumped U1 after soldering, but that shouldn't cause issues either.

Just RMA it.

I found other pics here of a X6R and those pins are soldered.

I need to wait to hear from FrSky again to see if they will accept RMA.

FrSky have confirmed that these pins should be soldered.
