More than 4 channels in trainer mode.

Post by krashem »

Hello all, I'm attempting to set up trainer mode, Horus X12s master / Taranis X9D slave, latest OpenTX version, for the 1st time.
I'm unsure as to how to resolve a problem. I'm using a Phoenix 1600 I've just built, this has separate aileron channels using 1 and 2, flaps are on 6 and 7.
In the trainer set up screen, there is only allowance for 4 channels :? Can I manually add extra channels, and if so, where are they added?

I have flaps set up on the Horus master for this model, if I don't list these on the Taranis slave will I still be able to use them when switching back into master control?

TIA Mike P.

You use the TRx sources in the mixer.

Thanks for the prompt response Kilrah. Would this be on the Taranis slave Tx?

That's the way to use other channels from the slave on the master radio.

Thanks to all who assisted me in getting Trainer mode working.
Apologies for being so ignorant in the Black Art of RC programming

I have the 2 Tx's working as they should in trainer mode, albeit with a fly in the ointment :(
When the student Tx has control the travel of the servos is 100%, I have rates & expo setup on the Master Tx working perfectly.
How do I apply this setting when the student Tx is active, it doesn't work through the Master when control is given to the student Tx?

I've dropped the percentage in the student Tx to as low as 20% without effect, must I copy the same rates & expo into the student Tx as I have in the Master Tx :?:

Thanks for any assistance. Mike P.

Are you using TRx sources in the mixer for channels 1-4?

Is this on the master Tx Mike? If so, no. I have TR1 to TR4 listed in Inputs because I have SH triggering student mode. Released by me moving sticks on master Tx.

As I use ersky9x I'm not certain but I think you need to set a "Special Function" to assign a switch to the "Trainer" function. When the switch is "ON", then the 4 gimbal values are replaced by trainer input values, as defined in the radio "Trainer" menu. This then means anything like expo is automatically applied to the trainer inputs.

Yes, you use the "Trainer" Special Function for the main controls. You only want TRx for auxiliary stuff not involving the sticks.

I'm sorry gents, I have ancient, heavily abused grey cells, are you referring to the student radio or the master radio :?

Thanks for the input gents, however, I'm still having difficulty getting rates & expo to work when the student radio is active. I have 25% Expo & 60% rates applied by switch SB- on the master Tx but it fails to apply when the student radio has control. I must be missing an extremely large elephant in the room

Many thanks for sharing your time, knowledge, and most of all, patience with an old duffer :)

I found a post that clarified all, even for me :?
Apologies for not conducting a more thorough search before asking here. It may help others if I repost it.

All the student has to do is to fly the model. All trimming is done by the master (Teacher's) radio. if the trainer signal is well calibrated in the trainer menu for the student's radio, then if the teacher trims the model it should also be trimmed when the student has control..
Of course if you want to apply Expo to the student radio ONLY, you can do it. But if the teacher also uses expo, then you don't have to.

I found the info re' Expo on Master Tx would apply to student Tx to be incorrect, in my case at least. I had to program Expo & Rates into the Student Tx in the Mixes screen to get a more sedate model for the learner.

I find that very strange. You shouldn't have to as far as I know..

As I said in the previous post, when I switch SH to allow the student Tx control of the craft, it functions well as it should, but it will not mirror the rates & expo I have on the master Tx, it uses full throw of the sticks making it too twitchy for a new learner to cope with. The only way I found to achieve damping of the controls for the student was to program expo & rates into the mixes of the student Tx.
Will this forum allow me to post screenshots from Companion?

Yes. That's what we need. Or even better save the otx files from companion for both radios and post them here.

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm at a loss as to how to attach the OTX files to my posting. The full editor does not seem to have an icon to attach files.

Is the master model Phoenix?

As explained previously you must NOT use the TR1-TR4 sources for the main control functions, but use the "Trainer" special function to enable the built in trainer handling that takes care of all you want.

Sorry Kilrah, I forgot to mention that. Do you mean I should remove the TRx entries in the Phoenix settings? I'm unsure as to how to use those particular settings. I've not been able to find any examples online that I could study. Do you know of any examples you could point me to?
