OpenTX 2.2.x does not communicate with Google Earth

Post by Richard » Tue Jan 16, 2018 9:04 pm

I am not able to transfer the logs into Google Earth.
I can see the log into the Companion Viewer, but when I click on the Google Earth icon, it opens the program, but does not show the track.
I checked differences between the 2.0 and 2.2 logs, and I found out that in the 2.2 latitude and longitude are in the same field, separated by an space, while in the 2.0 they are in two contiguous fields.
Was this just a miss in the new version?

Strange. Did you eventually autooffset GPS-Altitude? This would cause an invisible underground track in GE.

I have set the bario Alt to Auto-offset, but not the GPS Alt and Speed.

Carbo, please, check the screens I am getting (attached). I think the problem I may have is for some reason when I hit the GEarth icon, the software module that is activated is the one used for 2.0 instead of the one for 2.2. I can try to make the log to "look like" the 2.0 and double check, but given that it seems to work on your side, I guess something is wrong on my side.
In the meantime, I am adding my log file attached so that if you can, verify that is opening all right on your side, which will confirm that something wrong in my setup.

Still strange, i can see a part of your track, when i hit the GE symbol in my Companion 2.2.1 logviewer. The rest is indeed underground. You start at about 2.5m, this seems OK near the beach. But then your GPS altitude turns suddenly to negative numbers, while your baro altitude behaves normal. The two altitudes look like two comletely different flights, no clue, what happened here. Eventually someone else has more phantasy?

Wow, you'r right. I thought it was GSpeed. Will Check that out. In most of my logs they are pretty close one to the other.
Regardless, I cannot even see neither a piece of the track. I think I need help form one of the 2.2 developers. Like you, I am using 2.2.1. No reason not to get the same track than you, regardless of the altitude issue.

You might want to try deleting the and rediscovering the GPS-related telemetry sensors.

OK, Will try that tomorrow at the field.
Thanks a lot.
One other weird thing I found out related to Carbo observation is that I had set the Vario Source to RSSI instead of Alt. That should fix the altitude issue. I verified with other config and the log shows similar GAlt as Alt, but still the track doesn't show.
May I have the transfer module (if such thing exists) to the GE corrupted?

Vario source should not change a thing, that's just for the audible vario sounds.

There is no such thing as a "transfer module".

OMG, Well, let's what happens tomorrow after the delete/discover.
Thank for your response. I hope then, that the altitude and the GE track issues are both related to Sensors discovery.

Good news and bad news.
As per Kirlah suggestion I deleted all sensors and after waiting for 30 seconds, I make a sensor discovery. All sensors were up and reporting as expected. The altitude issue returned to normal (almost no differences between the GPS and the Vario).
The bad news is that I am still in square one with the GE connection. The log seems not be opened by GE.
Still, the same GE can show me logs from the companion 2.0. On GE I am using Google Earth Pro. I verified that both Companions are pointing to the same GE exe.
Please, help!!!

Hi Richard,

Try to delete all the previous logs and places you visited in GE on your PC.
That worked for me when I had a similar problem as yours.
You have nothing to lose.

Bad news gents. I deleted all the logs 2.0 and 2.2. Did not work
Uninstalled GE and re-installed. Rebooted the PC. Did not work
Uninstalled Companion 2.2.1 and re-installed. Did not work

Now I am frustrated. I don't know any other trick.

Suggestions please!!!!

Well, I opened the log in Companion 2.1, and I got a track in GE. However the location was near the coast of Africa rather in the East Coast of US.
I think only a magician can fix this problem. I am done with ideas.

Richard,

This is what I suggest.
Start from scratch again, and do a simple circle in your back yard just to check if all you sensors and GPS coordinates are correct.
Hold the plane high in your hands at your head level and not near the ground.
Do a reset telemetry before you start logging and don't use auto offset because in my opinion this will put you close to ground level and a flaky GPS will give you negative values so not apparent in GE.

Start small and look what does not work. And it takes less time.

Good luck.

Well Ray, the fact that the GE showed me in the middle of the Atlantic, did not mean that the coordinates were wrong. I entered the coordinates in Google Maps, and it showed me exactly were the plane was at the time of the log. In other words, there is no problem with the log itself, as it shows correct values (no negative altitude, for example) in the log viewer. The whole problem is that the log is not appearing in the GE. Now, with that said, other than uninstalling and reinstalling GE and Companion, I really do not know what do you mean with starting from scratch. I am sure I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what else can I do. The only thing that is coming to my mind right now, is to uninstall, clean the registers and reinstall, because it looks like there something residual that is used in the reinstallation of either SW that doesn't allow the process to go straight after the reinstall.

Richard,

In the excel file you posted, you have a lot of negative Altitude values and a lot of small altitude values.
This means GE will not display those values.

From scratch means, remove all sensors and put them back one by one. Do a simple circle to save time.
Try to remove the Vario and use only one sensor the GPS alt and GPS position and see if the logs appear in GE.
Don't use the auto offset for now.
I don't have a vario and it works well with the FrSky GPS, not very precise but it works.

Sorry, Ray.
Since I posted those logs, I made some corrections to the Telemetry settings and following Kilrah suggestion I deleted all sensors and readquired back again.
As per the new suggestion from Kilrah, here is the last log I got.

Hi Richard,

Did you save this last excel file on your PC? Or you simpy sent us the exact file OpenTx wrote? No edition whatsoever?
I can't even read it with Companion 2.2.1

If not, please send the file saved directly in the SDCard directory in your Tx without opening it with your Excel program.

Hello Ray.
The file has not been manipulated. However, I am sending you now the file downloaded straight from the transmitter SD.
I did not have any problem on opening the one I sent you before, as shown in the screenshot I just did.

Hi Richard,

Sorry, my bad, for some reason Companion is adding extension .url to the cvs.
something like this : filename.cvs.url

I have no idea why and I'm not sure why this happens on my side.
Until I resolve that problem (my problem) I can't help you.
If anyone has an idea, let me know.

But in your case if you can load and see well with Companion, then your problem must be on the PC with GE??

Ok, Ray,
That's weird too.
I think the GE having a problem is 80%, the other 20% is my companion.
Unfortunately, I don't know how GE manages the cvs file, but what is very strange to me, is that the log files from 2.0 and 2.2 have a major difference right at the sector where the coordinates are stored. The 2.0 and before have different sectors (columns in Excel) for latitude and longitude, while in 2.1 and up both are in the same sector (column).
Now, from here there are two questions:
1) Is de GE capable or configurable to take coordinates in 1 or 2 sectors?
2) When you click in the GE icon in Log Viewer is there a process to transfer the file to GE, and convert to a format that GE can understand?
As per Kilrah there is not such a module, but then it should be something like a bat file to open GE and load the log into it.
One way or another, the problem is in my side, for sure. Where is it, is the problem.

Hi Richard,

I was able to reproduce your problem. It works in Companion 2.2.1.
In GE pro, I could see the X go in circles but no orange line of the flight pattern.

You might want to try this since it worked for me just now but I use GE pro. Not sure if it is the same options in GE.

Once you are in GE pro, click Tools > options > 3Dview tab
On the right choose DirectX instead of OpenGL.

Ray, I am also using GE pro, and I had set DirectX.
I bet that in the attached screenshot you have something under Temporary Places. I have nothing, as you can see.
Now, there is another variable that I wonder if it doesn't make the difference, which is the bin that I am using.
Below is the one I am using. Is that the same you are using?
opentx-x9d-noheli-lua-en-2.2.1.bin

Richard,

Yes you are supposed to have a temporary place in GE.
If there is nothing, then you won't see anything.

My bin file is: opentx-x9d-en-2.2.1.bin

It doesn't, companion converts the log into a kml file before passing it to GE.

I just opened that in companion 2.2.1, clicked the GE icon and it all works as intended.

Can you do the same, and in GE right click on the entry in temporary locations, choose "save as" and post the resulting file here?

If you don't even get that then probably you have the GE path set incorrectly or something wonky on your PC that prevents companion from making the temporary file which should be in the standard temp folder... C:/Users/[profile]/AppData/Local/Temp/17656-flight.kml
