9XR and xjt with telemetry
9XR and xjt with telemetry
Hello,
i have very big difficulties to understand how to modify my 9xr radio and a xjt module to show telemetry data. I know there is a tutorial:
http://forum.turnigy9xr.com/converting- ... e65474ebca
but they are talking about a djt module, i own a xjt which layout differs. So i don´t know how to solder in a right way. Can anybody provide the right tutorial for my xjt module ?
Thanks in advance

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
The XJT already sends SPort telemetry data on pin 5 of the module connector, but it is inverted. You need to include an inverter circuit as part of the mod to the 9XR. Have a look for how to mod a 9X in the WIKI. There is at least one way showing the required inverter (http://openrcforums.com/wiki/index.php/ ... _telemetry).
Note that the two pins of the processor that need wiring to on the 9XR are also available elsewhere, and are easier to connect to than the processor.

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Thanks for the fast reply. But i don´t understand where to solder the inverter circuit and where can i buy it ?. Your tutorial is referring to a 9x radio not a 9xr. Where do i find the pin 5 of the module connector. Sorry for my stupid questions but i am a beginner. A friend of mine is capabile to solder these things but he needs detailed instructions because he has nothing to do with RC.

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
This device is typically used: http://www.t9hobbysport.com/frsky-recei ... -lite-ful1, you may be able to source one more locally to yourself.
The module connector is the 5-pin connector the Tx module plugs into in the back of the transmitter. The pins are numbered from 1, at the top, to 5 at the bottom.
Pin 41 of the processor is connected to U6, pin 10, and Pin 42 of the processor is connected to U6, pin 11.

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Yes that looks correct. As I mentioned above, on the 9XR, the two pins of the processor you need to wire to (41 and 42) are connected to U6 on the 9XR. The pins on U6 are spaced further apart so are easier to solder to.

Hi Mike,
could you give me further explanations regarding soldering the 9xr Board. I added two pictures. The first part is quite clear. Maybe you could draw on the pictures what to do.
Thanks in advance

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Absolutely NO changes are needed to the XJT module, it already provides telemetry on pin 5.
For the XJT, you do NOT need to connect anything to pin 2 of the module connector.
All you need it the connection to pin 5 to the converter board, and the R1OUT signal connected (via a 470 ohm resistor) to the FrSky RX as shown on the picture in this post: viewtopic.php?f=95&t=6038#p85134.
You do need to re-wire the THR and AIL switches to pins 41 and 42 of the processor.

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Halo guys;
May I ask if theres an option not to edit the DJT Module , and do the mod just on the 9xr to get frsky telemetry?
thank you

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Yes if you connect to the pins on the module faceplate. The reason for modifying the DJT is only to avoid having wires running out the back of the radio.
Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Thank you Kilrah;
I tried to search where an manual for such mod is- i think there is a need of cutting connections on both sides on the pcb of the madule slot where the long pins are on the 9xr.
If there is a step by step pictured manual, i would be thankful as over weekend I wanna to go for the mod

Is this method gonna work in combination with openlrs (433 Mhz)as well ?

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Reading this I realize this is quite an old thread but I am wondering if anyone with knowledge of the Turnigy 9XR (not pro) is still around.
I have just done the FrSky mod on my turnigy 9XR. The buttons failed as expected and after telling the radio the mod was done it worked again as advertised. The thing is, no telemetry at all, just 0’s. I have no idea what i could have done wrong. Goofy84’s picture was what i used but i soldered the (in his picture blue and yellow 470ohm) wires into the pins of the external flash port since I read that was where they were going and it was easy to solder. Any buddy around who can shed some light on this subject?
Hope to hear from someone,
Jeroen

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Can you please post a link to the telemetry mod you did??
Also, what firmware did you flash to the 9XR?

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
Thank you João,
I did the mod listed here by goofy84 in 2014 on sep 11 at 1036am.
Sorry not really familiar how to post a link. Only i soldered the 470resistor wire to the top middle pin on the communication port, and the “blue wire in goofy84’s picture” to the bottom right pin on the communications port. I was led to believe they were the same and it made for easy soldering.
I flashed my firmware with version: v1.748-mike / 30.11.2016 / er9x-r820 / frsky 128.
I will look into how to post pictures here. Makes explaining a lot easier.

It is easy
used these posts as a baseline for my modification.
but I changed some things after reading about them illustrated by the pictures below:
Did i do something stupid you can see already or do I need to make pictures from my radio's insides?
thanks for the help!

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
It looks correct, but I don't have that radio and I don't know which way the programmer plug is soldered to the board. Please measure continuity with a multimeter. Pin 2 of the processor should connect to wire A on the ISP connector, and pin 3 of the processor should connect to pin B of the connector.
Also, which level converter did you use? the same as in the picture? Did you power it with 5V?
Do not connect it to battery voltage or you can damage many things

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
João,
I’ve checked it all again just to make sure I am not giving you misinformation.
5V over the inverter chip: check
Pin2 connected to the A wire: check
Pin3 connected to the B wire: check
Is there any way I can measure if the inverter chip is working? What should be the output to pin5 of the module or is that an input that has to come from the XJT module towards the transmitter and can only be checked while in use? If so any ideas how? I do not know how to measure or test the functionality of the inverter chip.
BTW, yes i used the exact same one as in the picture.
Thnx again for the effort, did not expect to get a reaction on a thread that has been idle for so long.
Grüße,
Jeroen

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
I guess you connected pin5 of the module bay to the level converter.
But I am not sure you can connect a XJT directly to the level converter.. I think I remember the need of a diode somewhere? Not sure, it was long ago.. Perhaps Mike could comment on this..

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
I've just posted a test version for the '128 processor. This includes a DEBUG menu in the statistics area. This will always appear in future versions for the '128 and '2561.
This menu has a counter in it that shows if any data is being received on the serial telemetry signal.
Check in the protocol menu you have the protocol set to "XJT".
Then go to this new menu (UP LONG, then RIGHT twice). Is the value beside "TelRxCount" changing?

Hey guys,
Last few day I was out of the country. Now I am back and flashed the radio with the new software 822 in the test corner of the er9x site. it reads V1. from 17.02.2018 so i think i have the wrong version. Where can i find the version you are talking about mike?

Re: 9XR and xjt with telemetry
OK,
The transmitter is flashed and looking in the debug page the "TelRxCount" is indicating "0000" and is not changing.
Should I change anything on the XJT? I have both jumpers down.
Telemetry UsrProto : FrSky
Hardware : Frsky Mod Done "check"
Protocol :
Proto XJT RxNum 0
Type D16
Am I missing something?

So Mike/João,
Anything more I can do? Any ideas?
Should I use a different inverter chip maybe?
You guys sound like you know this stuff pretty well.
I am more than open for suggestions.
Thanks for all the effort so far. Happy to have people thinking with me.
