Bob, did the atmega chip in the 9x really survive that 12V blast or did you replace it? :o

Hi João,

I do not know. I do not see any damage to it and it look's really good.
I did what I could troubleshooting and the values are not the same, as a good working 9x mainboard.
I replaced some caps and installed the 5V Regulator and the ohms values were still not correct.
I do not know how to troubleshooting for it.
I would like to know if the CPU is OK too.

If you have any suggestions to check it out, I would like to try them.

I hope to remove the stock CPU chip from the Fuse Brick mainboard today and maybe solder the new ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip in its place.

When I have this completed, I think the next thing is to try flashing the er9x firmware to it.
Is there anything special I need to do and/or know when I get to where I am ready to power the new ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip up ? :?:

When you come to flash the '2561, the factory default is to use its internal oscillator, divided by 8, so it is slow. You need to set the fuses correctly (values in another thread). To do this, you will need to slow the programmer clock down (Avrdude -B or -b, can't remember which).
Once the fuses are set, the CPU will use the external crystal so will then run at full speed.

Hi,
I have removed the Fuse Brick ATMEG64A AU 1139 CPU from Stock 9x Mainboard.
Please View the Photo's and if you see something that looks like there may be a problem, let me know so it can be correct it.

Inspect the surroundings with the magnifier. When I replaced the chip on one of my tx's, I had a very small blob of chip quik shorting a smd capacitor. Lucky I checked all with the multimeter and magnifier.

Edit March 19, 2019, Note: Go down to where I used eepe to setup the 2561 chip:
(viewtopic.php?f=95&t=3819&start=120#p74295).

Hi,
I have the new ATMEGA2561-16AU2561 Chip soldered to the 9x Mainboard and the ohm readings have check OK.
I have installed the upgraded 9x Mainboard into the FlySky 9x Radio.
I have the SmartiesParts Programmer Board installed for the USBasp connection to the computer
and it is ready to be powered up to set the Fuse Settings and flash the er9x-2561 firmware.
100_4571.JPG
I have not done this before and I am not sure how to do these next steps.
I would like to use the same process that you used when you did your Fuse Settings and Flashing er9x -2561 firmware to the 2561 Chip.

And do I need to make ...... the programmer, Slow Down by adding -b and/or -b100 to the Extra Arguments on the Burn Menu (in Companion9x and/or myAVR ProgTool and/or other ?)?

I am not sure which Software to use and how to use it at this point.
eepe or Companion9x or AVRdude-gui v0.2.0 or Bill suggested using: myAVR ProgTool V1.39:
Bill wrote:Bob,
Forget the dudes Dude a simple tool that will do everything you need is myAVR progtool:
http://shop.myavr.com/index.php?sp=down ... wort=dl112
All you need is to do then is to load the correct hex file.
It includes simple diagnostics and fuse setting.
If the processor is bricked however you will need to apply an external clock to the processor to get it to talk to the programmer.
myAVR ProgTool Hardware_3.jpg

Are these the correct setting for Companion9x:

Does myAVR ProgTool support UsbAsp? Didn't know that. The option in extra arguments is -b100 and not -b.
Don't use companion to set the fuses on the 2561 as it doesn't support it as far as I know. 2560 IS NOT the same chip.

Question for Mike.
Eepe supports the 2561, but can it program the fuses like we do with the other chips? If not I think it would make it easier if it did.

Bob, you might have to find a program that supports both usbasp and the atmega2561. Try searching for "extreme burner" or "Xtreme burner" I'm not sure. That might do the job. I never used it yet I gotta say.

Good luck

Joao

eepe from r393 does include fuses setting for the '2561. It ignores the EEPROM protect option and always sets the fuses so the EEPROM is protected from being erased when flashing.

Mike.

Edit: I've just changed the code to handle to protect option. That will be in the next revision of eepe.

Bob, then I think you should try eepe r393. Don't forget -b100 in the extra arguments when setting the fuses. after setting the fuses this option is not needed anymore and you can remove it from the extra arguments.

Hi Mike and João,

I am good to try eepe!
100_4633.JPG
Updated eepe to Revision: r397
I have updated eepe to Revision: r397 (is this version OK ?)
and I have entered the following Data and Selection Options to:
Preferences / Version to download: er9x-2561, Processor: m2561.

Note: The "Processor" setting in the photo needs to be changed to m2561 in this photo.
(Processor setting to: m2561).
100_4616.JPG
"Preferences"
Note: The "Processor" setting needs to be changed to M2561 in this photo. (Processor setting to: M2561).
AVRDUDE Configuration / AVRDUDE Location: C:/Program Files (x86)/eePe and eepskye/eePe/avrdude.exe,

Programmer: usbasp, mcu: m2561, Port: _ _ _, Extra Arguments: - B 1000.
Note: Needs to change the "Extra Arguments" settings in the photo to: -B 1000
100_4639.JPG
"AVRDUDE Configuration"
Note: Needs to change the "Extra Arguments" settings to: -B 1000

Is the next thing to do (when I an ready to give it a try) connect the 9x Radio
with the new ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip through the USB to eepe ?
100_4618.JPG
Which one: Set Fuses to Protect EEPROM
or Reset Fuses to Factory Default.
Next I think, is to do, the Fuse Settings.
I am not sure what to do at this point.
Do I click the Set Fuses to Protect EEPROM or Reset Fuses to Factory Default?
100_4638.JPG
Set Fuses
Do I need to set any of the Fuse Settings for '2561 when using the updated eepe:
Low: 0xDE
High: 0xD1
Ext: 0xFC
and if it needs to be set, how do I make these settings?
100_4651.JPG
Set Fuses Screen,
NO 9x Radio connected yet!
Depending on which to select with the 9x Radio connected through the USB SmartieParts programmer Board,
I then Click on the correct Set Fuses option.

NO 9x Radio connected yet!

Then after this I should be able to Flash er9x-2561 firmware to the new ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip / FlySky 9x Radio.

Add Edits:
Note you need to corrected some of my settings that I have in the photos, they are incorrect.

Read further down this string for all the proper settings with using eepe to flash the new chip.

Looks correct. It will set the fuses to protect the EEPROM, the option is ignored in eepe at present (it will be handled in a future revision). You do not have to set the fuse values.

In preferences your photo shows the m64 processor as selected? better change it to m2561 ;)

Mike, would it help to add an option to read the fuses so we would be able to test the connection before writing something? At this point you can't do any firmware reading. but we would be able to read the fuses.. Also in some cases the fuses changed for some reason and the radio stopped working properly. In some cases it became very slow if I remember. wouldn't being able to read the fuses help to diagnose the problem?

Thanks

Hi João,

Good catch!
I placed a Note under that Photo saying it is now corrected.
It was an older photo which I took before I saw that it needed to be changed.

I think, when I Set Fuses I need to use: Set Fuses to Protect EEPROM.

I need to go out now, so I will try it when I get back.

Hi Mike and João,

It did not work.

1) When I turn on the FlySky 9x Radio the display screen is blank with the Back Light on.
100_4659.JPG
Powered New ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip up.
2) I rechecked all the Data and Selected Options and they are good.
To set Fuses on new ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip:
Update eepe to Revision: r393 and up. Entered Data and Select Options:
Preferences / Version to download: er9x-256, Processor: M2561.
AVRDUDE Configuration / AVRDUDE Location: C:/Program Files (x86)/eePe and eepskye/eePe/avrdude.exe,
Programmer: usbasp, mcu: m2561, Port: _ _ _, Extra Arguments: -b100.
Use: Set Fuses to Protect EEPROM.
Set Fuses_will Protect.jpg
SET FUSES OK
Set Fuses for 2561 Chip.jpg
Set Fuses for 2561 Chip
3) I then clicked: Set Fuses to protect EEPROM.
4) Then I clicked OK.
5) And there is an error, when it ran:

6) Trying to flash er9x-2561 failed also.

I think the programmer can't see the chip.
1- Check the connections. You have the SP Board right? Make sure that all the pins make contact.
2- How are you powering the radio? using the SP Board? Latest versions of the SP Board require the tx to be ON as far as I remember.
Ahh, NEVER, NEVER use the -F option. That can brick your radio.

Bob,
You might have try using the command prompt in Windows. I used this command with success:
C:\Program Files\eePe>avrdude.exe -P USB -c usbasp -p m2561 -B 500 -u -U lfuse:w:0xDE:m -U hfuse:w:0xD1:m -U efuse:w:0xFC:m -v

Your path may be different.

I just checked Avrdude, you need -B 100 not -b 100, or even, for setting the fuses -B 1000. It doesn't matter if you slow the clock a lot, there are only a few bytes to transfer.

'cause I'm not very familiar with avrdude and its parameters I'm using AVRDUDESS,
a very nice GUI for avrdude so far.

Checking and setting fuses is very easy, you can save own presets ...

Yes, I believe with the Rev. 2.3 SP Board the 9x Radio needs to be turn on to make connection to the 9x mainboard.

Hi,
Before I do the next step to try to Set the Fuses for new ATMEGA2561-16AU CPU Chip.
I did a quick test for the address of the AVRDUDE Location.
I changed the Data and Selection Options back to my FlySky 9x Radio with er9x-frsky firmware and I was able to: Read Memory from TX.
My thinking is the AVRDUDE Location address is working OK.

OK, just wait for it to finish, then remove the -B 1000 from the extra arguments, that's what is slowing it down. You need to -B 1000 to get the fuses written, but then the '2561 will be clocked at full speed.

Bob: You need to read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=95&t=3594. Some of it you can skim over, but you will need to do one of the mods suggested to make sure you don't get a reboot when using a horizontal trim switch.

Hi Mike and João,

I have done this mod: Digital Ground Fix for Horizontal Trim Rebooting and I did Bill's version for this mod fix.
See: (http://openrcforums.com/wiki/index.php/ ... Ground_Fix)
"Also See Bill's version of Horizontal Trims Rebooting / Digital Ground Fix @: (http://openrcforums.com/forum/viewtopic ... 120#p69475)"

I will review the: "9x upgrade to ATmega128A3-AU + Reboot With Horizon Trims" String Posting soon.

The Flashing is complete, But some things are not working correctly.
Note: I have removed the -B 1000 setting from the Extra Arguments option.

Added Note Sept 7, 2018: Installing the new 2561 chip and flashing it went very well :D ,

but I did have another problem with several of the (Hobby King) button switches in being very corroded,
so I had to replace them as you will read further on.

This is the 9x Radio that got the 11.6 volts to it, because of a Wrong 5v Regulator (was 12v) I installed by error.
Before the mishap with the wrong regulator, everything was working in this 9x Radio.

in this 9x Radio the parts that have been replaced are:
1) 9x Mainboard that had a Fuse Bricked CPU now upgraded to the '2561 CPU.
2) Are using a different SmartiesParts Rev. 2.3 programmer board.
3) There is a different Stock 9x transmitter module plugged in to it also.

Note: I have received a new 9x TelemetrEZ board to replace the burnt one.
It has not been installed yet, ..... so No 9x TelemetrEZ board is installed in this 9x Radio yet.

With great difficultly, ..... I was able to calibrate the pots after flashing was complete.

Here is what is not working: 3 of the buttons are not working properly. (as I have been able to see so far) :(
1) The MENU button is not working. :(
2) The Exit button is not working. :(
3) The Minus button is not working. :(

Its difficultly and/or impossible to move around in the menus without working buttons.

Could, not having the 9x TelemetrEZ board installed yet, affect the buttons from not to work ? (answer: NO).

Hi,
Maybe when I installed the 9x 2561 mainboard, I did not get the buttons installed correctly.
I think I need to check this out, But they do feel like they are working correctly.
Still ..... it may be the problem.

Buttons Up, Down and + work good.
