Turnigy 9x help. Please help!!

Post by ChosenLegacy »

So I’ll say the normal stuff, I am a total noob when it comes to this stuff, hope this hasn’t been posted previously, I did search forums and could not find answer. I purchased new turnigy 9x which came with an ia8 receiver. I’m looking to get this to work for a tank(blasphemy I know). I made the dumb mistake of flashing it with er9x before checking to see if it worked first with stock firmware, but I cannot get it to transmit to receiver AT ALL!! I don’t understand, flash went well, everything was set up in transmitter, transmitter binds everytime with receiver, yet I can’t get a dang thing to work!! I have latest version(that can be used on 9x, not latest version of er9x). I have taken it apart multiple times, everything looks good, I cut the plastic on the tx module, for better fit, took tx module apart, everything looks good, with module apart plugged it in to tx( so I know module is making good contact with pins), still not a damn thing can be activated with this transmitter, I don’t know now if I had a dud from the start or what. I am super confused with all the mixing and things on this sort of radio, I have tried to teach myself through countless hours of research how, but something should work!! Can’t get one channel to operate ANYTHING. Tx powers up without any problem, switch diagnosis screen shows switches are doing “something” but doesn’t seem like they are transmitting, although def bound to receiver. I had flashed my gt3b and programmed that for a crawler I did without any issue, so now I’m clueless as to why I cannot get this to do anything. Please someone help, and be gentile as I’m new, but does this seem like a dud radio, or is it possibly in some sort of software setting that won’t allow this to do anything, I’m soo lost?? Please help

AFAIK Open firmwares do not work with the new module. Need to stick with the stock firmware.

Not a big fan of stock firmware, should I just upgrade transmitter? What would work well for a land vehicle with open channels for accessories like machine guns and other tank based things

I think the problem is that Mike (Er9x developer) doesn't have the new module and receiver the new 9x radio ships with. Therefore he is not able to make it work.

Perhaps you could go with the Frsky system. with 2 receivers you could get 16 channels.
But, how good are you soldering? Are you into electronics? If so I could point you to some nice DIY projects where you could build your own RF system.. This was what I did. But not for beginners :) I build my RF modules and receivers.. Not my projects though :)

The "new" module uses PCM from the radio. As I don't have one of these modules, and a compatible receiver, I haven't been able to consider trying to implement this PCM on er9x.

er9x does support FrSky Tx modules, and also supports the multi-protocol module. I believe the multi-protocol module supports the iA8 receiver.

Thanks joão,
Yes I have been reading your er9x manila, thank you, I can solder without a problem, but do lack the electrical knowledge to build my own system. Basically the reason I wanted something past your basic 4 channel stick system was so that I could add anything now and in the future that I wanted feature wise. I also love the capability of the customization aspect, my 9x now loads with a cool tank splash screen instead of having an airplane on it. But I guess I came late to the party, I do realize most of these 9x write ups were one 2015 and earlier, I just wanted a dedicated tx with one model only, but I guess I’ll have to flash back to stock firmware and deal. Thanks

Yes, check the multi protocol module as Mike suggested. it might work with your receiver.

Follow the link and ask there if it supports your receiver, just to make sure..

Guys sorry for my ignorance here, but when you say multi protocol module, are you talking about a specific one? When I search the web for that there are a million different multi protocol modules, what one in particular are u referring too? Thanks

He wants to use his receiver if possible.. :) Multi protocol is his best bet, and might open some new doors in the future ;)

Thanks for help guys, received multi protocol module, can’t seem to get it to work, I have tried reading through many forums, but I hear so many different things from so many people, and it all gets so confusing fast, so I flashed with er9x standard before I got new module, some people say you have to flash with a different er9x to use multi protocol? Is this correct? The led doesn’t light up on my module, I saw a you tube video on how to correct but it was on stock firmware. Can somebody please, just give me quick step by step instructions for an absolute beginner on what I have to do to get this to work with standard er9x, I’m getting frustrated with myself, because I can’t get anything to work and I should be able to, I have been around rc for awhile but have always dealt with single frequency ground radios, never needed the expandability, but I need that now, and I keep dumping money into this and can’t get it to work, please in laymans terms someone help me, you guys are the experts, thank you.

So, what processor does you radio have? You will have to flash the correct version of 9X for the radio's processor

From my research it looks like it should be a mega64 processor, although mine doesn’t say it, I guess it’s a cheap clone of it, so I believe the er9x standard should be the version, correct?

I think your right, I think it is an atmega 128 clone, I do believe that’s what I flashed on my transmitter, but maybe not, from the er9x page I see er9x standard, which I know I flashed, but I also see a mega 128 version, should I flash to that? Also I now have the multi protocol module installed and for the life of me cannot get it to work, does that have to be flashed seperately? I can’t even get the led to turn on, on the module, I have watched countless YouTube videos, but can’t get anything to work, I’m honestly about to throw the damn thing in the trash, I have had no problems before flashing transmitters, I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or have defective equipment?

yes, i think the right version to flash is the one for m128. what are you selecting in the protocol menu?
You need to select "Multi" as potocol..
try to switch the rotary switch on the module to zero.

This transmitter only works with the supplied receiver. After installing er9x it works only reluctantly with other receivers. bind was difficult. he works perfectly with the multi-protocol module

So, if the receiver binds to the multi protocol module, what does not work?
Please give us more information, we cannot see your radio, so you need to give more detail of what is working and what is not working, otherwise we cannot help you.. :(

this transmitter with er9x and multiprotocol works flawlessly with the listed receivers.
There were problems only with the original built-in transmitter module, with er9x,. for example receiver turigy TGY-iA6 I was able to bind, but after a model change, the bond was gone. I had to tie up again
