Mike, could it be that is starting in bootloader mode somehow?
I remember reading about the same problem a few years ago, but can't remember what caused it or what the solution is

Could be, that is controlled by the state of the serial Rx input at power on. If the serial Rx pin is low at power on, then the board starts in the bootloader.
I can't make either of my er9x radios fail in this way.
