Please help - computer/Companion won't talk to Taranis Plus

Hello All,

Read thru download info on OpenTx University.
Watched Painless360 Youtube video on the subject.
My Taranis Plus has 2.0.17
I downloaded Companion 2.0.20 on windows 7 laptop. Companion opens ok.
Taranis power off, plugged usb to laptop, got the windows tones indicating laptop sees it.
Went to Open-TX.org and followed link to Zadig driver and down loaded, ran and opened it.
On zadig I select STM 32 bootloader and click "reinstall driver.
I get anotice "driver sucessfully installed".
On Companion I click on "settings" I confirm it's set for Taranis Plus, click ok.
In companion I click "write firmware to radio" (It says version 2.0.20, I click write to TX.
I get box pops up saying "DFU Util executable file not found"!
None of the other buttons on the left side of companion will communicate with the Tx!

WTF! Did I miss the magic fricking pixie dust, did I not pay of the right taranis fairy? :x :x :x
How to I get past this?

Thanks,
Doc

Settings -> Configure communication, browse to dfu-util.exe that should be in companion's install directory. Setting must have got changed somehow.

Hi Kilrah,

I checked as you prescribed, dfu-util.exe was listed in settings window.
When I clicked "write firmware to radio, same error message appears.
Now what?
Can't the Open TX programmers make it so this stupid radio will connect to a computer without having to launch a moon mission?!

Any more ideas is greatly appreciated,

Doc

Doc. Neither openTX nor the Taranis are stupid!
Maybe you should reconsider and maybe openTX and Taranis is just not the tx for you. I don't want to offend you! But I have seen a lot of Taranis radios being sold second hand like new.

Drive an old family car, Porsche is just not for me ....

Sorry to offend, KH.
It's just very frustrating when you think you're following the steps properly and can't get the TX to connect so you can use it.
Just thought folks on the forum may know how to get it working, not just sell it.
If I'm posting in the wrong forum, just let me know.

Here's what it says in Companion settings -
This is where the DFU is when I go to companion > settings > configure -

C:/Users/Dr Moore/Documents/RC1/Taranis/Taranis Instructions/drivers/Taranis Drivers/dfu-util-0.7-binaries/dfu-util-0.7-binaries/win32-mingw32/dfu-util.exe

Is this right or wrong? If wrong, do I need to delete and re-install Companion somewhere else?

Thanks,

Doc

My main OS is PCLinuxOS and there it says

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/dfu-util
but I still have a WIN7 thing here (Yes, sometimes you have to have it  ) and there I see

Code: Select all

C:/Program Files (x86)/OpenTX/Companion 2.1/dfu-util.exe
Make a clean companion installation. Can not get worse ....

Companion is a PROGRAM and therefore I would place it there, not in DOCUMENTS.

No idea where you got the idea to put that in.

As mentioned dfu-util is delivered with companion and the path set right by default, there is absolutely no reason for a normal user to change it.

Still getting "DFU-Util executable not found"

Companion installed as follows -
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenTX\Companion 2.0\

Zadig installed.
Top drop down menu lists 'STM32 BOOTLOADER
Driver says - WinUSB (v6.1.7600.16385)

With Tx off, I plug in USB cable.

What do I need to do to get the computer to connect to the Tx?

Thanks again,

Doc

Possible victory!
I found the DFU path in Companion and was able to get the green progress bar when clicking on "Read Firmware From Radio".

When I click on both "Read Models and Settings From Radio" and "Backup Radio to File" a graphic pops up and says "No Radio Was Found" with instructions to turn on the Tx with the trim buttons in. Is this now normal?

Do I update the firmware from 2.0.17 to 2.1.9 with the radio off?
Is the firmware update the only thing that is done with the Tx off?

I'm unclear as to what you do with the Tx on and off.

Thanks for the help,

Doc

Those questions have been answered a dozen times in internet. Maybe you should concentrate on reading those instructions ...

As an example: http://open-txu.org/home/v2-1-resources/ point to https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=2451551

Thanks kalle123!

Yes, I do search and read a lot and watch a lot of Painless 360's and other's videos. I'm sure the answers are all out there...somewhere.
As I'm sure you know, for me as a newbie, figuring it all out and where the answers are takes a while.
That's why I thought the forums were for helping get people off the ground.
Should I not be posting questions here?
I don't wish to be posting anything inappropriately; want to be a good member of the community.

Thanks for the guidance and patience,

Doc

Doc. I don't know, where you are living. But seeing your posts here, I think, it would be a good idea, to search in your neighborhood for someone familiar with Taranis or maybe a flying club for giving a hand.

Of course you should be posting your questions here, and you are very welcome to do so. That is why forums exist, right? ;)
But please be a bit less agressive :) If you look at your first few posts, you will understand what I mean.
I won't quote your posts but:

1 - Neither OpenTX or Ersky9x are stupid

2 - The radios are not stupid. We can, or we cannot work with them. If not, then we try to learn. We search for the info we need, or we ask for help here politely and with respect for our fellow forum user.

3 - As far as I know, no one sells radios here, and therefore people are NOT obliged to give us support. They do it because they want to. Both OpenTX and ErSky9x are OPEN SOURCE firmware. That means, people do it for free so we can enjoy our hobby better due to its power. All my radios do stuff that the most expensive ones don't. The developers follow these forums, so they might also help when they have time. They also rely on us to find problems so they can fix them. Again, they do all this FOR FREE. You are very welcome to donate to them though :)

4 - OpenRCforums is a great and friendly forum with great and friendly people, and we all deserve to be treated with respect.
And we would like to keep it that way :) ;)

Back when I was still using openTX on Taranis I had a lot of trouble and could not get it to connect to my desk top PC (Win 7),
but was able to connect to my notebook PC (Win 7).
I fixed it by changing to erSky9x on Taranis and erSky9x on Taranis just connect's without any trouble.
There seems to be something not right with how openTX is using the connecting firmware.
Most connecting problems seem to be between openTX on Taranis to PC computers.

@João.

Doc, in my opinion, is NOT aggressive, but just frustrated.

But what I a missing in his posts. Facts, facts, facts. What is he doing with what equipment.....

Can place pictures here, make a video and upload it to youtube. Those things say (in my opinion) more than 100 words.

Yeah, maybe the word "aggressive"was a bit too strong.. The thing is, some of the people that could step in and help, might not if they read such posts. I'm not criticizing, I do get in bad mood quite often :) but I have learnt that it just doesn't help to solve my problems :)

Doc, again YOU ARE VERY WELCOME HERE and I hope you find the solution to your problems.. I'm sure you will ;)

Thank you all for your guidance.

I am certainly sorry for offending anyone. I DO appreciate the forum and support and the programmers.
I should have started my first post by saying - "Stupid doctorbatman! I can't figure out how..."
After hours of trying to get the Tx to talk to the computer, I wasn't in the best mood to create a post.

I have asked around locally but when I said I bought a Taranis, I got only frowny faces.

I hope to be able help solve someone else's troubles once I learn the ropes myself.
I am really enamoured with all the flexibilty available. with the Taranis and Open Tx which is why I got one.

Again, thank you all,

Doc

Next try ;)

Maybe

- you should post your location

- someone here reading about your problem can step by and give directly a hand

- you start posting facts (Doc, your last post here is NOT helpful!)

- make a video showing your efforts
