Wow, now I have an "edit" and "X" to delete a post on the post immediately above but not on my posts prior. Something to do with being newly registered?
Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
If this is for the Taranis 64 x 32 pixel 4 bit format you'll never be able to read the letters/logos. The image is too small and resolution too low. Also, the necessary format does not lend itself to the planes as they are oriented in the image. Here are three quick images that I put together and an orientation in the space that I was hoping would make the flames readable. In the interest of putting something out there quickly for your reaction I didn't take the time to get rid of all the sky, just the easy areas. The flames, wide wing cord, and narrow fuse seem to be the signature characteristics of this plane. Perhaps some work with the contrast would help?ckleanth wrote:anyone?ckleanth wrote:Guys, can someone with graphical skills create for me these two a/c for open tx a/c icon?

Addiction X - another one
Here's another one that just came to mind. I'm not an expert with Photoshop but I tried to get the contrast up in order to see the Addiction X logo and make out the flames better. Needs more though.
If you want a more conventional image you need to find one showing the plane the way you want to see it. Remember the radio requires a 2:1 horizontal format.

Model Artwork for Taranis
I'll ask again since my post on the previous page will get lost soon.
I tried irfanview but couldn't get the 64 x 32 part?
Has anyone successfully used IrfanView to get .bmp's into the Taranis?
I'm just trying to figure out what software works.
Is it possible to take a picture of one of my models, then alter it to a format that Taranis accepts?
Thanks for any help
Bob

Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
Yes, I have used IrfanView to convert pictures of my models to the format the Taranis needs.
For the 64 x 32 part select Image - Resize/Resample from the menu. In the Resize/Resample dialog uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio (Proportional)", select "Set New Size", select Pixels for units, and enter 64 and 32 into the width and heights boxes then select OK.
Convert to Grayscale by Image-Convert to grayscale and decrease depth to 4 bit with Image-Decrease Color Depth select "16 Colors (4 BPP).
Save as a bmp with a filename no longer than 10 characters and no spaces.

Awsome Jim.
That's what I was looking for.
I'll try it and report back as soon as I figure out how to do some mixing...

Worked as advertised.
I put a pic of my plane on the Taranis.
It looks pretty crappy though.
Is there some secret to taking a picture a certain way to get them to look better on the Taranis screen?
Thanks again

Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
I don't think a picture will ever look really good converted to 16 grayscale. Probably the best you can do is make sure you take the picture (or crop it) so that changing it to 64x32 doesn't stretch it or completely distort the aspect ratio. Also take it against a complete white background or remove the background in a photo editor so the model stands out. They are never going to look like a photo in 64x32 and 16 shades of gray.
Model Artwork for Taranis
I'll try a foamy against a white background and see what happens.
Mostly my situation is that the picture on the Taranis screen is light and hard to make out.
Thanks for the tip

Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
Here's images for a couple of planes I fly, the TechOne Neptune EDF wing and the SIG Kadet Senior. The Neptune image will also work for the HobbyKing Sonic 64, which is the exact same wing.
I did these in Photoshop CS2 (a free download from Adobe these days). I resize the canvas to a 1:2 aspect, then I change it from a color image using the gradient map adjustment (using the 'black, white' preset) and tweak it with the shadow/highlight adjustment (best way to tweak the lighter parts of the image I found, better than the contrast control). Then I change the image mode to 'Grayscale' and resize the image to 64x32 with bicubic sampling. When I go to save as a BMP there is an option for 4-bit and this creates a file that works fine on my Taranis. On the Neptune I had to cut it out of the background first, I then created a new 1:2 canvas and pasted/positioned it and did the rest of the process for creating a file for the Taranis.
James
PS- using the method I described in this forum posting I created sound files that get played when the model is selected as well.

I re-size and change to gray scale, and mess with contrast and brightness in another app (paint.net) then save as bmp. I only use infanview for the lowering to 8 bit part.bobnj wrote:I'll ask again since my post on the previous page will get lost soon.

Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
I also did try to look at those planes, but you really need something that is wider than tall, and none of those pics are, so they won't come out to well, or you really have to cut them off.ckleanth wrote:anyone?ckleanth wrote:Guys, can someone with graphical skills create for me these two a/c for open tx a/c icon?

Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
and a quick overview, at least of how I do it...
first, try to find an image that is wider than tall.
open in some app that has layers (paint.net is good and free)
add a layer of white under the pic
start deleting from the image any background (you will see the white behind it)
use magic wand selector if you can (if background is mostly solid, and/or much different than plane colors)
delete large chunks by either selecting boxed and deleting, or a large eraser
zoom in and clean up deletes with a finer eraser (does not need to be pixel perfect)
Then I crop the image as tight as I can in both height and width
change the image to grey scale
start messing with brightness and contrast, but only on the layer of the image, not the background, we want the whites of the plane to darken a tad, but the background white to stay pure white
once you get the greyscale to look good, save it.
you can flatten your image, by merging the 2 layers now
then go to re-size the image (keeping aspect ratio) fill in the width of 64, if the height updates to 32 or less, go with this, if more then fill in the height of 32 (then the width should be less than 64)
let it resize
here there is probably a better way, but I open a new image that is 32 by 64 then paste in the other image (I think you can re-size the canvas without stretching the image)
then center the image.
save as bmp.
open in irfanview, and save as 8bit greyscale.
they seem to come out ok

I'll start another thread if necessary, but how would I play the name of the model at startup?
That would be just outstanding...
Thanks

Re: Model Artwork for Taranis
Set a Custom Function and make it the first "Play Track" CF that you program.
Set switch to "ONE", function as "Play Track", param to "modelname.wav", and "No Repeat"
You will, of course, have to make a "modelname.wav" file of the recording you want to hear for the model's name and copy it to the SD card in the \sounds\en folder. Once done the model's name will be spoken once when the radio is turned on as the selected model and the name of a new model will be announced when a different model is selected.

edit - Here is a link to Rob Thompson's sound server for making easy .wav files to add to your Taranis library:
