Do you have the "SD CARD" menu I mentioned some post back? That is the "SD browser". I believe you should be able to "browse" the SD card to find the openTx firmware file you put on it. When you select it, there should then be an option to flash the bootloader with it.

Running OpenTx, the menu SD-HC card list shows EEPROM (contents: readme.txt), FIRMWARE (cont: ersky9xr_rom.bin, opentx-9xrpro-autswit...... , readme.txt), FIRMWARES I added this dir earlier (cont: <empty>). ..and other directories.. nothing that looks like a bootloader.

The bootloader is in the same firmware file you use to flash the radio.

Attempted to install the OpenTx bootloader, from the Tx SD card browser. By selecting any of the f/w versions on there gave only options to copy, rename or delete, no install.

Were you using erSky9x firmware on your 9XR-Pro ?

Yes, I had flashed the latest version onto the Tx...this does not give access to the SD card menu, the OpenTx f/w doesn't see a bootloader option. It has the opentx f/w now.

This may help if there is misunderstanding.
MikeB wrote: Wed May 03, 2017 12:32 pm The bootloader and "maintenance mode" are two different things.
You access the bootloader by holding the two horizontal trims towards the centre.
You access the "maintenance mode" by holding the two horizontal trims apart.

If the SD card is not formatted properly you will not see it.
The SD card must be formatted in FAT 32 for erSky9x.
Could be a bad SD card too, maybe try a different SD card
Connecting USB to your PC you should see two driver from your SD card.

Sometimes opentx will not connect to a particular PC, try a different PC.
For me, erSky9x with eepSkye just works, where I have had trouble with opentx working properly with some PCs.

It may be that openTx doesn't support flashing the bootloader on the 9XR-PRO.

Perhaps someone from the openTx development team could answer this.

Mike.

Thanks to all, especially MikeB for spending the time to help me.. I will go and play with OpenTx trying to configure mixes and modes for my F5J gliders. I recall enough of the old version of Ersky9x to know that it is fully able to host my mixes and more... so can be comfortable that I will have a good system to drop back to if I find that OpenTx is not for me.

If you only tried the old Ersky9x, you should try the new versions. It is much better, and it has a complete new and easy to navigate menu navigation system, as well as many new features. I am not even mentioning the fantastic hardware support, like trainer over bluetooth, telemetry over bluetooth to your phone (D8 only, limited by the existing android app), replacing two position switches with 3 position, rotary encoder for easy menu navigation, etc..
also the excellent 4 in 1 multi module support :)

The best of all, is that Ersky9x for this radio is still being regularly and actively developed and maintained :)

I am biased obviously :D

Thank you João, Now I feel guilty.... within my club there are several that run OpenTx who can help me with those simple "how do you set that up" questions... there are no other Ersky9x users.

Don't feel guilty.. My suggestion is, Save your eeprom, save the firmware, and try both. Then see which one you like more.
The only thing is, if you do hardware mods that are implemented in ErsSky9x, like replacing a 2 position switch with a 3 position one, it will not work on openTX, so you would have to undo it for the switch to work again.

Just a post to thank all of you who tried so hard to help me.
Most of the problem appears to have been due to the procedure used to connect the Tx to the USB port on the PC.. Things are much better now, if I connect in the wrong way, I get the SAM_BA message so know that it is not right, as MikeB suggested.
