OK, this topic can be used for "longer" off topic discussions ;-)

That's one of the reasons why er9x/ersky9x has the imperial option for telemetry, it scales the metres to feet. I thought there was an imperial option for openTx when you download it.

civilised aviation world? I thought that a JAR license was civilized enough even if the planes I used to fly had metric instruments :o ;)

Long story. Intitially when you added the Imperial option to openTx. You could see feet shown in the altitude section, but the voice would still work in Metres and it gave the correct height in Metres. It was flagged up and on the next firmware release (with the imperial option selected) both the visual readout and the voice is now in Metres.

Yes Joao. Most of the World still uses (thankfully) Imperial measurements for much of what it does. :)

Yeah, well good that I started with metric because now I can use both very well. Funny that my first IAS was in MPH

Air speed/wind speed should be in Knots. Horizontal distance in Nautical Miles for navigation. Both of those fit together nicely. :) Vertical distance (height) in Feet. Last but not least. Horizontal separation from cloud is measured in Metres.

i've got ten fingers that convinced me to count in decimal ;-) and honestly i don't like mixing units just because they exist. If theres another good reason despite some traditional conservative ones... i would be curious ;-)
in case i loose 2 fingers in the future i might have to change to octal though. :D

Only reason I see feet being more usefully for aircraft is the higher resolution.

But for me... meters all the way :)

I haven't looked closely or been able to get my hands on the Frsky Variometers. The price of them seems to be about the same (high precision version) and cheaper (normal) than what we can build them up for.

Has anyone done comparison tests or have an idea on what they are like?

The openxvario is better than both of them, if you don't need the "bridge" feature for telemetry.

Hello,

First disclaimer, I'm a total newbie, and don't really know what I'm talking about. With that out of the way, here goes...

If one wanted to make a ground based OSD system, would it be possible to utilize these two awesome projects: openXvario and DIY-OSD by Dennis Frie (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1776186).

The thinking being that one would use openXsensors to collect and transmit OSD data packed in frsky protocol down to ground, decode the data and feed it to eg. MinimOSD or Dennis's board loaded with DIY-OSD code to mix the OSD data with the video signal from vRx and feed it to display.

Surely would need some bridge code written, but I'm more interested, that is there some show-stopping failures in the logic?

...forgot to add, that the thinking was that the frsky data could be transmitted from the transmitter via bluetooth to the ground station.

What kind of sensors would you think about using onboard?

IMO the best is to use frsky sensors or compatible (openxvario as is), then on the ground hook the FrSky module's output to the OSD... and modify the OSD code to take frsky-formatted data.

Well, the vital info missing from openxvario is gps in my opinion. With that, you get lots of info (distance and direction to launch specifically) from diy-osd. And once we go past frsky protocol, might even use the gyro+accelerometer sensor that diy-osd supports for virtual horizon.

All of these are in the standard frsky sensors :)

And those are supported by openxvario as well? If so, I stand corrected and agree with you 100%. When you say "hook the FrSky module's output to the OSD", you mean by a cable right? Or bluetooth?

Did I already mention I'm a newbie ;)

But, all this should be doable, right?

openxvario is meant to replace frsky sensors.
So you would likely just put FrSky sensors the way they're meant to.

Cable or bluetooth, people have done both.
