Hmmm, I am trying to follow this thread but I can`t get any telemetry sound out of my TX. :(
What is the model set up to have the beeper beeping with oXv ?

I have stock board with stock beeper and open9x with r1947, variant 212-3
(No audio mod)

You need at least the audio mod as the buzzer can only make one tone.
Or choose the audio option even with the stock buzzer, it could probably give something useable...

Then the parameters are on the telemetry setup page.

Thanks Kilrah.
I know that I am very limited with the beeper frequency.

But I stuck with the set up of these parameters ....

Hmm don't see where you said it!
Anyway, parameters are max sink range, lower and higher end of the "silent" zone, and max. climb range. Units are dm/s.

Then to enable vario sound you need to assign a switch to the "Vario" custom function and switch it on.

ok, maybe my fault. I was assuming that the variant number tells you something about the options being selected..... so, maybe not :|

As I have selected audio for compile option I can´t find these parameters you are mentioned :(
Maybe c9x does`t compiled it correctly

João, do the "siren" and friend sounds work correctly on your Tx?
On sky9x the beeps are NOT audio files. Just frequencies requested by the vario feature.
What siren? I have a siren on my radio but it is a voice file for the inactivity alarm.. Do I have another one? :o :)

Never mind, found it.. it seems to play right.. I don't understand with some nice sounds in there and the vario sounds so bad :(

What about the beep 1 or 2 sounds or maybe the warning sounds? or maybe both combined? But keeping the frequencies higher.. on square wave the low freq sounds are really bad..

Thanks for the PM, it would have been even better if you wouldn't have disabled the sink tone ;-)
i agree, the frequency is still too low.

Is this true for openXvario type ? Or is it for WS vario ? I am looking for oXv settings.

In custom switches menu I can`t select Vspd as source. Do I missed something ? I am lost. So please point me to the correct values.
I don`t need sound for sink, only for lift.

AFAIK values do the same for all vario types. There's no way to disable sink tones at present.

Have you added a Telemetry field on the customs screens to shown the Vspeed and alt?

If those move, then you can rule out a simple issue of the vario actually sending data!

Hi Promix,
I've been discussing this with Bertrand and he mentioned that you have to make sure to select the you have to select the AUDIO option in c9x though
but not the VOICE!
If you could get the tone working, that would help in finding a solution for the audio problems from Joao as well. so please try again!

Re: OpenXVario flight reports

I built a OXV this weekend using a Ardunio Nano I had laying around, and GY-63 MS5611 sensor board I bought off of eBay for this project.

Having never attempted ANYTHING with an Ardunio previously I found this build and programming super easy. I put it in a HK Easy-Fly, and connected it to a D8R-V2 that previously had a Frsky Hub & BMP085 sensor that I didn't find very helpful in previous flights. Programmed the 9x Telemetry per the Wiki, and walked down to the beach for a couple of test flights.

There wasn't any lift to be had, but it was obvious that the OXV works dramatically better then the Frsky BMP085.

Thank you very much for this project.

Hi Jeffrey!
welcome to the forum and thanks for the feedback.
so which flavour did you use ;-) ? do you use a Pot for the sensitivity, programming mode or just the internal default?

I used to fly full size gilders 10+ years ago, and really missed the sound of a rising Vario.

I used the internal defaults fo the time being. After testing in my Living room with the defaults I was in too much of a hurry to charge a battery and get down to the beach before the wind shifted, temp dropped, or sun set.

I have been running Open9X since the fall, waiting for a Ardunio Vario project to land in my lap. I was thinking about attempting to port another PIC Open Source Vario project, flytepark-microvario. Thus the reason I had a Ardunio Nano already on hand, but it was just to much of a stretch for me at this time. The OXV was just what I've been waiting for.

Thanks guys for your effort. Finally I managed to get vario sound. I found my beeper with an internal defect. He is sensitive to input voltage level and only clicks or goes silent some times
So I kicked him out and did the speaker mod. The sound quality is still lousy but it does not matter. I`m happy now and looking forward to do the REAL AUDIO mod..... some day :D

Good to hear that!
Do you have about the same sound quality as Joao showed us in the video?
Bertrand asked for more tests in order to be able to increase the sound quality in this constelation.

Good to hear the vario is working nicely with the DLG. That it detects the small stick thermals tells a lot. Way to go guys this is awesome! I finally received my GY-63 boards but no sign of the arduino boards yet. The only glider I currently have is not much of a thermal machine. More of a warmliner for strong days. I would like to get into DLG but not sure where to start. The good ones are so expensive! DLG is definitely where a good sensitive vario will be a huge asset though.

Wow! ... What a day.. Thermals all over the sky today, most of them were really powerful and not that easy to get into at times. The vario got a good work out and a few Red Kites thanked me by joining my model in a thermal.

Two sessions were done, which enabled me to come home and reprogram the vario. With the filter set at 400 I thought that it was a bit too sensitive to changes, so it confused me as to if I was centering the beasts. Quick trip home. Change the filter to 470. That was better (or the thermals were less challenging) as to the beeps that were being returned from the TX. So the vario part seems to be well.

The altitude reporting (above ground/field level/QFE) wasn't good at all. All seemed fine up to around 100 or so feet. Above that the display changed to report that I was at minus 490 something feet. Taking the glider to below 100 feet visually things returned to normal. This was repeatable although it was hard for me to play the air and look at the display/listen to the voice as to the exact point that it was going wrong. Back on the ground I did spot that at random the altitude display would show -655 then revert back to zero.

Hopefully I will find some time tomorrow to go out again to gather some more information on this.

Great news.

Did you mean to say 470 you set it to for less sensitive?

I have never had am unstable altitude on mine... Strange.

Maybe a barometer difference?

There is something hugely rewarding about hooking a thermal. :-)

Yes.. I changed the Kalman from 400 to 470. I should have stated that the vario is fitted in a Multiplex Easyglider Pro which isn't all that heavy fitted with a 920KV motor running on a 3S 2200mAh pack. so it responds fairly quickly to any changes.

It is a bit odd with the altimeter section. The vario continues to work as it should when the altimeter screws up. I want to see if I can repeat it again tomorrow. If I can then the next step will be to fit another vario that I have at my side. I should also add that when the display showed the large negative number, it would decrease as I climbed. So it was operating as it should... Still doesn't explain the minus 655 showing now and again while on the ground.

Off topic - It is that Rob. The particular thermal where I was joined by the two Red Kites was one of the best that I have known for a couple of years. On the edges I was getting kicked around and at one stage it pushed the aircraft on its back. Specking out the model was easy. I view thermals as free fuel.. To hear the other flyers talking about £20 odd being paid out for 5 Ltrs of fuel, with a flight costing something like £1/flight. I just smile..

Hi FLaps!
It sounds exactly like a bug that has already been fixed a while ago.
it caused only the altitude transfered to the transmitter to turn negative at a certain height. Climb Speed calculation was not affected.
The bug was actually fixed in r125
Wich build are you running flaps?
