Looking for a 12ch receiver.

Hi guys, I dont know if this is the correct subforum. Please if not, move it to the adequate forum.

The thing is I am looking for a 12ch receiver, it has to work with my 9xtreme with the multiprotocol module. I am taking a look and I am lost with so many brands. And ah! It should not be SBUS. Can you tell me what can suit me?

There is DIY project in this forum from Mike, which is an SBUS to servo converter/adapter. You could build and use it with a Frsky X8R receiver. This receiver outputs channels 1 to 8 on its pins, and the converter connects to the receiver via SBUS. Then it can output channels 9 to 16 on its own pins..
Use the 8 first channels (receiver pins) for control for extra safety..

To clarify, pretty much none of the modern systems offer a receiver with >8 servo ports, the expectation being that if you need that many servos you probably should use a power distribution box to ensure they get adequate power, and that gets its input from the receiver via SBUS.
The only one I know is Jeti, they have a 10CH and a 12CH but that's not supported by your module.

So yeah, either use one receiver plus an SBUS decoder if your servos are small, use 2 receivers, or use one or 2 receivers connected to a power distribution box. You don't mention your application so nobody can know the better choice for you between those.

Hi, sorry, I did not mention the application because I thought it was not important. Plan is to use it in RC tanks, like this one.

Now I am building my last tank (Yep dear wife, I promise you this is the last one, lol) and I will need about 12 channels. The first 8 channels are for the main control board of the tank, and the other 4 the plan is to use two channels for 2 servos, and the 2 channels left for extra lights.

@Joao: That SBUS-PWM Adapter is a great idea! I cant find that DIY kit that Mike is building, but I have found this on ebay. What do you think? Not sure how many channels it has

https://www.ebay.es/itm/RMILEC-Multi-un ... 2723394454

@Kilrah: For 10 channels we have the flysky receivers which are cheap, but for 12 I´ve found this one https://hobbyking.com/en_us/orangerx-r1 ... tore=en_us I think it might work, but I am not sure.

It is funny, that I saw that receiver years ago, and I told myself "who in the hell needs 12 channels?!" Lol, life changes.

That one would probably work. I say would because I never used it. :)
But you could probably build your own cheaper if you can do a bit of soldering, and program a little arduino board.

I can solder, but I cannot program 😭
If there is a step by step tutorial like the ones you did for flashing the multiprotocol module, I guess I can follow it.

jhsa tends to consider that everyone wants everything as cheap as possible and isn't counting their time, and that they actually want to DIY anything that can be DIY... perfectly fine to buy the various commercial offerings.

Well, in this case Joao is right with me. You wont find a bigger extreme cheapskate than me. I hate even buying food, go and figure. I am sick of cheapness, lol.

But yes, if making a DIY consist of reaching 3/4 the price of the desired item in parts, I preffer to just buy the one that actually works. It is said poors man's money goes twice to the shop.

That is not a fair comment because it is not true :) We have been here long enough for you to know better :)
I tend to consider that this is an hobby and people might want to try DIY their own stuff like I do. I could perfectly buy my receivers, but I DO BUILD THEM. Sometimes more expensive than if I bought them in China.
I BUILD MY OWN RADIOS. They are certainly more expensive than some of the radios being sold, but, they do exactly what I want, and certainly have some features that you might not find in any commercial unit. Thanks to Mike and the ErskyTX firmware..
Do you monetize the time you take to build your own stuff? Well, then you don't have a hobby, you have a job. :)

You see, my goal is to DIY as much as I can. And it is this feeling I try to pass to my fellow hobbist.
And, if it is cheaper, it is even better. :) Specially for people like myself that are not swimming in money.. :D

Ahh, by the way, talking about DIY, I think there is a GREEEEAAT DIY project comming soon, if things work the way they should.. :) And more I am not saying. :)

I hope I clarified a few points here :)
All good, I didn't take it too seriously :)

Well, if it helps I must say I love the DIY a lot. Proof of it is my radio, that has I think all the mods that Joao did, and some more. I am super proud of it! And this forum and er9x-erskytx has been the main pilar of my hobby. I would be lost without it.

Joao If you create more of your receivers please do a step by step tutorial, I will definitelly try to make my own too, because I love to learn new things, and I love even more to save money, lol.

The DIY Frsky Compatible receiver is not my creation. I have just built several for myself. And they have been working really well.. Here is the link to the project thread.. It is a long one and you don't have to read everything. On post number 1 is most of the info needed to build a receiver. if you go through the several pages, you might find several range test videos I made with my receivers. Not a beginner's project though.. Far from it

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthr ... RX-Modules

Also, even if you decide to buy the SBUS unit from the link you've posted, you can have a look at the DIY version using the code from Mike. There is another project developed by someone else, but I can't find the link at the moment.

viewtopic.php?f=91&t=5476

Scroll down to "Arduino as an SBUS Decoder and Outputting 16 Servo Channels with Failsafe on all Channels". You can also read from the beginning :) and learn that using this device, you can comfortably use your computer's mouse and keyboard to directly program your models using Eepskye. and without even turn the radio ON. eepskye send SBUS over USB and you can use the decoder just as the receiver for programming :)
You will see that it is not that difficult to build. But of course, it is up to you..
The code on that page is not the latest from Mike. You can get the latest at:

https://github.com/MikeBland/SbusToPpm

There is also an explanation how it works, and some more options that are not described on the link above.

Have a look at all this, check how much you pay for an arduino, a piece of stripboard, some pin headers and a trqansistor and some resistors. There is plenty youtube videos explaining how to flash an arduino, and we are here as well :)
Up to you, you can either go the easier way and build it quicker, or go the harder way and learn something new :P :D

And that's exactly what I said. But not everyone is like that, but that's always the only option you tell them about :)

I use 5 of the RMILEC that you reference and I also built several of Mikes . They both work great . On the ones I built U have to invert the sbus signal so I bought inverters for them . Mike has the inverter diagram with his schematic

Because it is the only option I know. I normally don't search for products. I have an idea and try to make it.. :)
And as far as this topic is concerned I didn't even remember about that commercial converter. The only one I knew was the project I shared. As I said I never used the one on the link, so I can't really recommend it. And, in my case it would be useless anyway, as i don't think it works with Eepskye.. That is where I use mine. To program my models using my PC :)

The inverter is also on my board. Check the link I posted above. There are two versions. You probably built the one without the transistor :)
Also, i think the RMILEC one won't work with Eepskye, because as far as I know it sends the SBUS at a slightly different baudrate, and not inverted. I could be wrong on this one though.. :)

Hy,
why not this combination
use 2 Receiver with the same Rx number
one bind to Ch1-Ch8 with Telemetrie
second bind to Ch9-ch16 with No Telemetrie

Also possible, but more expensive :)

The Rmilec works great with the x8r rx . I have not tried it with eepskye . The ones I built I used Mikes sketch I just didn't build the inverter . I bought them for a few dollars ..lazy I guess

How do you do that? If I bind two receivers to a module, the moth receivers do the same.
I have two multiprotocol modules in the radio if it helps. Do I bind one receiver to each module?

For the FrSky X8R, you put links on some of the servo outputs to set telemetry/no telemetry and ch1-8/ch9-16.
With a FrSky XJT module, you may set these options from the Tx when binding.

Thanks for your tips, guys.
Creating my own receivers seems to be hard but I will give it a try at some point.
I think meanwhile I will get one of those 12 orange receivers, and if it does not work I will try something else.

But thanks to all of you for your help!

I can't see why it shouldn't work.. At least now you have several options.. :)
