Wow what a mess. The white board is a smartipsrts board designed to flash the much processor with upgraded firmware like er9x. It also adds a backlight.
Not sure what the sparkfun board does but maybe it’s fixing a usb connection the smartiparts boars comes with?
This sp board and er9x firmware adds telemetry display the the screen from a Frsky D receiver.

The diode and other parts higher on the switch boars was to modify the beeper circuit.

The second picture is showing a internal installed Frsky dht solder in module. This 2.4g module supports telemetry from the D receiver to the SP board.
No idea why a external DJT Frsky module wasn’t used unless it left the back case port open for other module options.

WOW ! how things have changed in just a few years.

I still have one 9x with Steven's 9x SP 9x Programmer (Rev 2.3)
board and with the 9x TelemetrEZ (Rev 1.0) board.
I have always run the telemetry wires through the back of the radio case
to the FrSky transmitter too.

I have several old un-used SP 9x Programmer boards from
upgrading 9x radios to the 9XTreme boards, which are sold out.
Wish 9XTreme boards were still available.

You haven't noticed that? :) Since years I have a stock 9x board with a better processor, rotary encoder, more switches, backlight, voice module that also saves models to the SD card, internal DHT module, but I would probably replace it with a MultiProtocol module as it is supported by Er9x, etc, etc.  ;)

I think the red, Sparkfun board is a level converter for the telemetry connection to/from the DHT module.

Didn't the SP board have the converter already on it?

If I remember correctly, you could do your own upgrade to have Telemetry
or purchase from Steven, his plug and play 9x TelemetrEZ board,
which was much easier to install.

The SP board did the USB Program flashing and the Back Light for the display.
More about the (Rev 2.3: White board. Now includes header and plug/wires for LED connection
and Header for possible future use with TelemetrEZ added.)
Smartieparts.com: (http://smartieparts.com/shop/index.php? ... cts_id=331).

Discontinued SP Products: (https://smartieparts.com/shop/index.php ... ex&cPath=9).
Take a trip down memory lane.

This is an early Smartie Parts mod to allow reprogramming with out to much soldering. The internal FrSky Tx module has been added or a standard module has been modified and at a guess a further mod has been made to add sound. there was some problems with telemetering which may have been corrected with the Spark-fun board, it is not possible to tell from here , perhaps someone else will know. You should put this in Turnigy 9x instead of th9x it is an obscure place and may not be seen. :) I did not see all the other answers when I posted this.
