Aurora gimbal usable ?

erskyTx runs on many radios and upgrade boards
ersky9x was a port of er9x for use on the sky9x board.

I've decided to do the Aurora Stick replacement for a sky9x board. Is there a video or photos of the issues I'll contend with?

wiki has that and there is a topic in this forum showing pics for minor mod to put into T9x, do a little search.

I did search, read the entire thread. Also read what I could find on RCG. The more I read the more I got confused regarding exactly what would be needed in my application. There are so many different flavors of 9x out there now, that knowing what is relevant gets pretty muddy.

Here is the thing. I looked... like I said:
http://openrcforums.com/wiki/index.php/ ... dware_Mods

Nothing about aurora gimbals and this is the hardware mod wiki.

http://openrcforums.com/wiki/index.php/ ... on_your_9x

This page is how to fully mod a transmitter: Nothing here

I did however at your prompting find http://openrcforums.com/wiki/index.php/ ... a9_gimbals
because since you said it was there I needed to look further.

Finding stuff in Wiki is a maze, just because it's there doesn't mean it's easy to find.

I'm liking the silver. Curious how you would evaluate the feel of the Aurora gimbals compared to the stock gimbals?

This is the paint I used. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C0 ... hs_product

The Aurora gimbals are AWESOME compared to stock. They are like butter. And you can adjust the tention of each spring to your liking. Then they really shine ...

They are also full ball bearing supported gimbals.

I whipped up a minimalist gimbal-amp board design a few minutes ago:
Image
It uses the MCP601, a single-amp package of the part in the design I posted back on page 1, and ditched the trimmer as it wasn't really needed. You would need one of these boards for each gimbal pot. The green pads across the top are spaced 0.1", the same as the pins on the pot. As such, this board isn't much larger than the body of the pot itself. Assuming there's space in the radio (I haven't gotten that far yet), the board could be installed directly on the pot. The single octagonal pad is the 0-5V signal out, so the associated ground and power connections from the radio should piggyback on the solder joints for the pot.
PDF of the PCB design:

Eagle files:

From what I have heard, Hitec have stopped distributing the gimbals - I too have tried to source a pair with no success.
The simpleton asked "Hows about ErSky9X for Horus???". And the Genius from Dorset replied "Why not indeed? I shall get right onto it!" And then there was light on Horus! And it was good!

Maybe we are all lucky that they are out of the stock.. It looks like the frsky taranis gimbals might fit the 9x.
They could also be cheaper (just a guess), probably as good as the aurora, and available soon.. ;)

A Hitec rep locally told me they don't stock sticks for the competition to use, or to upgrade a $50 tx instead of buying their radio. Plenty of parts if you send your Hitec in for service however!
He actually said that to me at a hobby show.

Yup.. No doubt that Hitec can take that position of smugness because their radio sales are on an all time high, and they have no need to please people like us who just might have bought their radio kit in the future.. I was considering an Aurora 9 a while back.. No chance of me buying any of their kit now.. Blacklisted here.

I am old enough to recall a time when you could buy gimbals and all other specialist items from a whole host of suppliers.. How things have changed.

If or should I say when Frsky puts their gimbals on sale. They will more than likely gain more supporters than they have now.

Revenue protection at its best! They must be worried that this superbly selling cheap Chinese radio is affecting their sales one way or another.
I do wish I bought a pair when available though, as buying an Aurora just for the sticks would not go down too well in the wallet department! hahaha!

:P without the 9x we wouldn't be here.. If my 9x's break down I will fix them if I can..
And even if I have the other radio I will use them.. to show off :D :D
They have a story, the other doesn't.. I wouldn't have much fun showing the turanus at the field.. I didn't build anything in it.
The 9x was/is a hobby inside a hobby, bla bla bla bla.. I said this a few hundred times already.. going back to my corner now. ;)

I'm told the Taranis Gimbals have two sets of holes -- one for Taranis, and one for 9x. They will be available -- but when is the question.

I fitted a 9X gimbal into the Taranis case, so the other way should work fine as well.

Just about. The Taranis gimbals use 270 degree pots, but FrSky have built a small ampilfier onto the pot, in a neat plastic housing to give the (nearly) 5 volt range. The only downside is you can't swap the +5V and ground wires if the stick signal operates the wrong way.
