I ordered the EU X8R receiver by accident and I have a XJT I got in the USA with a 9Xtreme Turnigy 9X running the latest ersky9x. Is it just as easy as using a regular Taranis to flash the receiver to the USA firmware? Is it even needed, like... will the EU receiver just work out of the box and I shouldn't have to worry?

So self help... this guide will work the same with a 9Xtreme 9X that has the black FrSky wire soldered to pin#5 on the back 9X board which is the only mod you need to do for smartport telemetry. I have a nimh battery that usually sits over 10v so I spent the $10 to order the FTDI and some jumper wires. Will be handy to make sure all the receivers I get have the latest firmware flashed.
