Radio dead after updating.

erskyTx runs on many radios and upgrade boards
ersky9x was a port of er9x for use on the sky9x board.

Radio dead after updating.

Post by Rad »

Hello! Today I updated my 9xtreme to ersky9xProvR222b4, and after flashing the radio with eepesky as always (using revision P423, may 24 2018) and when I turn the radio on, the screen does two blinks in red, one in blue, and then the screen stays in green... The thing is the radio just stays in color green, but I can see nothing in the screen. Also I have the starting music.

Any ideas here?

EDIT: I reflashed and older version 222a8, and still the same problem... I wonder if something is broken inside and the problem when flashing is just a coincidence...

EDIT 2: I can read the models with eepysky. Im thinking about a hardware problem screen related...

Looks like a problem with the 9Xtreme communicating with the original main board. The backlight colours you describe are consistent with the 9Xtreme failing to see the AVR processor and then updating the code on the AVR processor (apparently successfully, shown by the green backlight).
My best suggestion is to remove the 9Xtreme, and clean the 4 pads it connects via. If you power the main board on, with the 9Xtreme disconected from it, the main board should display the revision of its firmware. My suspicion is the reset signal to the AVR processor on the main board is being held active (low). THis would prevent the AVR from communicating to the 9Xtreme, but still allow for a successful update.

Hi Mike, thanks for your fast answer as always. I have opened the radio and cleaned the pads, but still did not work. Then I checked all the connectors and then switched the radio On again, and suddenly, it started working, so it seems you were right and something was a bit loose inside. It happened just after updating, but it seems it was a coincidence.

I hate opening the radio with all my heart, because the screw mounts are beginning to wear... Do you have any tip or fix you can give me? I think smartieparts had something for it, but I dont remember it very well.

Thanks!

I have some 6BA, 20mm long self tap screws. These are just a little bit thicker than the normal screws and cut a new thread in the plastic.
As standard, when doing the radio back up, turn the screws backwards until they "click", indicating they are aligned with the existing thread, then tighten them.

The 6BA screws are 2.9mm in outside diameter.

Hi Mike, I have read your "clicl" tip months ago and I am doing it since then, its a great idea.

In the radio just one of the mounts is bad, but look what an awesome solution I found:

Hi Mike, a bit of necro posting here,

I am having more or less the same issue again.
9xtreme with:
ersky9xProvR222.zip
07-Jul-2019 20:23

Sometimes when I switch the radio, I have those colors popping again, and the screen stays in green.

But I noticed that I can start the radio in bootloader mode, and flash the firmware again. If I do it, the radio starts as usual.

I also noticed if I keep the left hand trim pressed right, the radio switchs on with no issues.

What to you think is going wrong? Pads were cleaned...

When you manage to start the radio, do the trims work as they should?

Yes, the trims work fine.

Also I must say the radio did not do this thing since a few days later after creating the thread. It started doing it again las time I flashed a softaware, in this case is a couple of days ago 99'9999% sure it is just a coincidence, but just in case....

Then another thing, not every time I switch the radio this happens. Sometimes it switches on completely nornal.

It seems to be able to control servos. Sorry the post's title is misleading, I wrote it in a panic attack back in the day when it started malfunctioning.
It is very strange and it did not do it for a long time until I flashed the newest erskytx version. Again, it can be just a coincidence, but the issue is there...

Also this does not always happen. For complicating the things even more, It seems it does it when it has been off for a day or two. I will try it again when I arrive home, and Ill try connecting and disconnecting the battery to see what happens.

It is not a huge problem, but if for some reason my 9xtreme dies, I jump out of the window.

Ok, if it is able to control servos it means that the 9extreme board itself is working.
And that makes me believe that there is some bad connection betwee. The 9xtreme board and the stock 9x board.

You could try to remove the 9xtreme board and clean the pads with an old toothbrush and some alcohol. Then assemble
everything again, being careful not to overtight the screws. Make also sure that the 9xtreme's pins are straight.

Last time I had the problem I opened the radio and I cleaned and the problem persisted for a while... But yes, I will do it again. In about two months Ill have the encoder on my hands, so I will open the radio, install it, and recheck all the wires and so on. Looks like that it will be the last mod I will make in my radio, because I believe is not possible to make anything else, lol.

As always, thanks for your help! Ill update as soon as I have news.

Well, after replacing 4 switches with 3 position ones, and installing 4 push buttons at the back of the radio, I belive the slider is not possible. If yes, please guide me because I will fit one just for the fun of it!

And the receiver in the radio, well, the bluetooth module is for that, right? If yes I have it... Anyway you know I never fly so it looks like I wont use it.

Yep, I know your thread very well, because I flagrant copied almost everything, lol.

I dont remember it very well, but i think if you install four 3 pos switches, and 4 push buttons like I did, there are just no more free ext pins, and hence is not possible to install the slider. Can you or Mike confirm that?

The 4 stick inputs on the original 9X board are available for extra analog inputs, and the hardware menu supports selecting one of these for each of POT4 and POT5.
