D8R-II Plus Internal Voltage and 9XR Pro

Post by johnrcglider »

Hi all,

Recently purchased a Turnigy 9XR Pro and flashed with OpenTX 2.1, I also purchased a FR Sky D8R-II Plus receiver, the receiver says it has internal voltage sensor, I have left jumper on pins X and A1 but how do I get this to show on the telemetry screen on the Turnigy 9XR Pro?

All your help is much appreciated.

It should be on the A1 telemetry field I believe..

I Don't use openTX, I use ersky9x, so I will leave this question to be answered by an openTX user.
Ersky9x uses a completely different telemetry implementation.

which version of ersky9x?

Go to Model Setup / Telemetry menu.
Set A1 range to 13.2V

That's it, if you have telemetry working you should now see the voltage in one of the telemetry screens..

Ok, what is RX Voltage for or do I leave that blank? Also read a thread about changing FrSky Comport to number 2 or should I also leave that as 1?

Many thanks

SVN: ersky9x-r220

Is this latest version for the 9XR Pro?

Rx Voltage is to be used with the X protocol only. The D8R-II Plus uses the D8 protocol, so it doesn't apply. Use A1 instead.
there is the possibility of connecting 2 modules to ersky9x if the hardware permits. On the 9XR-PRO it is also possible. One could be installed internally and use COM2 for telemetry for example. You seem to be using the external module, so leave it set to COM1.

Ok great will test out all settings in the morning, but would also be great if someone with OpenTx would be able to let me know the settings to do the same as i can get OpenTx to connect to Pc but with ersky9x I get the following error

=================================================================================
Started AVRDUDE
C:/Program Files (x86)/eePe/avrdude.exe -c arduino -p m64 -U eeprom:r:C:/Users/johnb/AppData/Local/Temp/temp.hex:i
=================================================================================
avrdude.exe: ser_open(): can't open device "lpt1": The system cannot find the file specified.

=================================================================================
AVRDUDE done - exit code 1
=================================================================================

Any ideas on both issues much appreciated.

Can you see RSSI?
What Rf module do you have installed on the radio?

No can’t see any RSSI either

I am using FrSky DJT module, both switches in off position

My glider battery plugs into ESC which then has one wire which goes into RX channel 3 for throttle,

Jumper is across X and A1, am I meant to have any other wires or power going into receiver?

Ok, with the 9XR-PRO, if you never modified the DJT so it outputs telemetry on pin 5 of its connector that connects to the radio pins in the module bay, you will need a special cable, also sold by HK, that connects from the Futaba trainer port to the back of the DJT module. This cable will then get the telemetry from the module to the radio..

Ok great, that might explain my friend has DJT module on Turnigy 9X with his 3DRobotics Iris drone and it has a cable out of controller plugs into DJT module

Thought 9XR Pro did it internally, how can I mod so neater than the wires from HK?

That's the thing. The 9XR-PRO does it. But the DJT doesn't.
You could mod the DJT to output the telemetry on pin 5.
Check the picture. To mod the DJT you would need to solder the wire exactly as in the picture. be very careful when handling the board not to break anything.

Also never turn the module ON without the antenna connected.

Ok so if I solder that wire all will work? What would happen if antenna not connected as took it off other day for safety so didn’t break it off and have it on?

Also if I get the XJT module and X8 receiver would that work without modifying? I do at some point want to purchase a smart hub so I can plug in vario and also thinking of pixhawk 4

Powering the module on without antenna can damage the PA (power amplifier) chip, and greatly reduce range. Never use an RF module without antenna.
Also if I get the XJT module and X8 receiver would that work without modifying?
The XJT will work without modification

This is the reason why you probably can't see the picture. Try reading the forum using a browser. Sometimes Tapatalk doesn't show the pictures..

Thank you João, can see picture on browser, ok will get se cable and solder that wire looks easy enough, then telemetry will show on screen? That simple?

What size wire is best?

Also is DJT module meant to be a tight fit on 9XR Pro or should I be cutting plastic away like on 9X?

Last question of the night, what RSSI strength should I get at what distance just so I can test I have not caused any damage to the power amplifier? Many thanks for answering all my questions

A XJT module will also work with the D8R-II, and give you telemetry.

If all that goes well, you're nearly done :)
What size wire is best?
Thin wire. Be careful not to short anything.
Also is DJT module meant to be a tight fit on 9XR Pro or should I be cutting plastic away like on 9X?
No need to cut anything. I used my 9XR-PRO with a DJT for a few years. still have it..

Put the DJT in range test mode by turning the radio ON, and then pressing the bind button on the DJT until it starts beeping. place your model about a meter above ground and walk away with the tx. You should have control for at least 50 meters. I could walk about 80 or 90 meters with mine before the servos stopped moving.

Hi again ok soldered wire as said and now getting telemetry, over the moon many thanks.

One thing is how do I get battery set at correct voltage? I am using 3s 11.1v battery’s

Some are 1600mah most are 220mah

But battery voltage shows as 5.0v

Thanks John

The 5v is the receiver voltage, provided by the BEC in the ESC. You want to know the flight pack voltage (11.1-12.6). To get this you have to use a sensor (simple voltage divider to reduce voltage to under 3v).

If you have X and A1 linked on the Rx, then A1 will show the Receiver voltage.
If you want the flight battery voltage, then you need to add a voltage divider (two resistors) and connect this to A2 (or remove the link from A1 and use A1).

This is what I have used:
viewtopic.php?f=95&t=4293&p=60766&hilit ... png#p60766

Using 10K and 3K3 resistors, handles voltages up to 13.3V (so 3S is fine), and you set the ratio to 13.3V.

If you are using the BEC from the speed controller to power the receiver, that voltage will always be 5V no matter what. That voltage won't go down until your battery pack is completely flat.
You need to measure the LiPo bettery not the receiver voltage.
For that you need a voltage sensor. DO NOT CONNECT YOUR LIPO BATTERY DIRECTLY TO THE RECEIVER.

Ok so I need to purchase https://hobbyking.com/en_us/frsky-flvss ... tore=en_us

If so will I still need resistors or does it come with everything needed?

I also want to get some form of gps so I can get speed and altitude readings what works well with my setup?

What can I also get that will control stability?

Thanks again
