I think the ground effect doesn't do that much when the heli shoots down towards the ground till it's a couple of centimeters from it and then shoots up again.. Sorry that is pure thum.. eerrr pilot skill :D

I think we have a bunch of people have nothing to do debating this.  May be this issue is qualified for a PhD degree.
if you use right hand since you were a baby, you will be right handed. If you use left hand since you are a baby you will be left handed. You do what you are used to. as simple as that.
A high school class mate of mine uses right hand to write but he is left handed hitting baseball.

he he true.. I use both for everything.. sometimes I get confused when sitting at the table.. don't really know which hand should hold the knife and the fork.. ;)
thumbs or fingers it depends on your personal preference.. But the fact is that in all the incredible videos I watched in this thread, the people are thumb pilots.. :)

The one that smashed into the other must have been the thumb flyer.

Some people have nothing better to do than twiddle their thumbs.. Real thinkers use their fingers. :P

Baseball... Hmmmm :? ,,,, Ohhh!! You mean what we call Rounders.. :)

Now if thumb flying was accurate and all that. You would have full size aircraft kitted out with thumb controls instead of what they have now. Maybe the all glass F35 is different in this respect?

I've trained myself to hold the wine glass with either hand and use as many fingers as it takes to not spill it. I think I'm going to practice on that while I'm rethinking all this, great news is that it's always after 5pm somewhere and I only have wine after 5p.
Maybe that's why I do my best work in mornings? Humm....
Another problem solved. Maybe I am a thumb flyer and don't know it.

I've read somewhere that the next generation of humans around year 4050 will have only thumbs
Thumbs allow you to show other people how friendly you are.. Give someone a thumbs up and you make him/her happy.. Now do the same with the finger ;)

Forgot to mention, the only ground effect I know is when I fly and hearing this 'thump' and take home a bunch of pieces. I know very well about that ground effect.

Actually I had a ground effect just yesterday. Flying my new Skyfun foam jet. Decided to do a slow and light landing, about 4 ft above the run way it dropped nose down like a rock. Certain found out how slow I can land this thing. Took home 6 pieces with me.

Ground effect doesn't keep a heli out of the ground at that speed. How ever it is great fun with my micro heli (mcpx) to get it about 4 inches (about 10cm) and let it just coast around over the drive way. People that don't know about ground affect are amazed when you can let go of the controls and the thing keeps flying.
I learned using my thumbs, nobody told me to do it differently. Now my fingers are uncordinated, and can't be used for controlling the aircraft. They have a mind of their own. Like bad little children, they cause crashes.

Ground effect for heli occurs within 1 1/2 rotor diameter. All that means you have a little more lift within that height so you need less thrust/throttle to keep heli afloat within that height. If you watch heli take off from roof top they like to go straight up before leave the platform. otherwise the heli will tilt when the rotor is partially out of the platform when half of the rotor is in mid air while the other half is still on the platform.
If you fly heli try to hover your heli at about 1 rotor diameter above a box talller than 2 rotor diameter, half of the heli is outside the box while the other half is over the box and see what happen. you can't keep the heli level. the side over the box will have more thrust/lift (from ground effect) than the the side over the ground. As long as your heli is above 1 1/2 rotor diameter above ground, there won't be any ground effect.

The 1st time i flew over my pool I made a mistake. I lift up and before reach one foot high I moved it from the bank into the pool area. The bank is about 1 1/2 foot from the water surface, that heli went into a dive when crossing the edge almost dived into water. ;)

Take a look at this ground effect and back wash from a 'well' over a floating/moving platform which has a size about the same as the rotor diameter: (starts at 3:57)
