SPort device updating

openTx has introduced a range of new features, ideas and bling. It is fast becoming the firmware of choice for many users. openTx will run on ALL current hardware platforms, including the gruvin9x and sky9x boards. Work has already started to support the new FrSky X9D radio!

Maintenance mode is in the main firmware, not in the bootloader.
Do you compile openTx yourself, or just download it?
I haven't built 2.0.17 as the firmware didn't change from 2.0.16, only companion changed.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for answering! :) It means, I don't need to update the bootloader.
So, I will used your customized version, then rollback to the French one.

To answer your question, I download the firmware, since I don't have the tool chain setup to compile it myself.

I was going to suggest that. If you put both files on the SD card, you can use the bootloader to swap between them, then you don't need to connect the to PC to pdate a SPort device as long as the required file is already on the SD card.

Hi Mike,
With OpenTX 2.0.18 about to be released would you have the time to make this version available with your maintenance mode upgrade?

Thanks,
Alex.

Once it is released, I should be able to download the source files and then I should be able to build it with "maintenance mode" in it.

SPort device updating Firmware Update Error

Post by flashclc »

Hi,

my name is Richard and this is my first post.
I only just received my new Taranis E at the beginning of the week and thanks to all the help and support to be found online I have been able to set up loads of things just as I need them.

Now I am facing a problem that I have not been able to find a solution for.

I am running OpenTX 2.1.3 on my Taranis and I am trying to update an X6R receiver via the S.Port to non-EU Version.
I have modified my Servo cable and downloaded the file X8R_15115.frk from the FrSky webpage to a new folder on the SD Card.

When I hook up the receiver to the Taranis via the cable it powers up (slow flashing red LED) and I choose the file from SD Card menu and select "Flash External Device". It changes the screen to show a progress bar and then a message pops up saying "Firmware Update Error". The cable is attached to the S.Port and not the SBus connection.

Has any body else experienced this problem or has any idea what I may be doing wrong?
I also tried flashing a non-EU X8R receiver to the EU version and received the same message.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

Best regards

Richard

It should not power up until you start the flashing procedure.

Thanks a lot Kilrah, that was just the tip I needed. I found that once I attached the receiver it powered up as described. So instead I only attached the receiver to the cable, started the update process from the SD_Card menu and then quickly connected the cable to the Taranis. Worked with no problems at all.

Thank you very much again for the help.

Best regards

The code I wrote uses the power switching ability of the module port, so the Rx shouldn't power on until the update process starts, which may be what kilrah means. You may have a hardware problem with the module power switch not switching.

Hi MIke,
mhh, well I got out my Multimeter and yes I do have a continuous 9V on the Pins. I double checked that the External Module was set to off. Do you think this is a Problem that warrants sending the Taranis back to be exchanged?

It certainly is a fault, and means that any external module you have plugged in is always powered.
Probably worth getting it replaced.

2.1.x includes the facility to update SPort devices, just not in maintenance mode.

The X9E only needs a mod because the 'external' module isn't easily accessible. The Taranis, 9XR-PRO and SKY boards are accessible from the module bay.

hi sorry to be a pain but last reply did not give me the info im needing, i had mantenence mode in my 2015 and loved it, i saw 2017 source file folder , so i upgraded through companion to 2017 then went to install 2017 mantenence mode only to find no eprom, i read on and i see 2016 mantenence is the lastest firmware as 2017 upgrade only affected companion, my question is now that im on 2017 can i just go back to 2016 or will i have to wait for 2018 update which hopfully will have mantenence mode as i love it, any help would be appreciated.

Maintenance mode was never implemented official in 2.0.x. Perhaps you had a modified firmware? SPort updating works in current 2.1.x releases on the file page. You could flash the bootloader of your old modified 2.0.15. It should work with the 2.0.17 firmware.

Mike has said that when 2.0.18 is released he will add the maintenance mode to it.
