Frsky telemetry data

openTx has introduced a range of new features, ideas and bling. It is fast becoming the firmware of choice for many users. openTx will run on ALL current hardware platforms, including the gruvin9x and sky9x boards. Work has already started to support the new FrSky X9D radio!

Frsky telemetry data

Post by Peter »

Hi, thanks for the great software. Configuration of telemetry data and flight fases are awesome.

Was using er9x, but this is even beter for me.

The only thing I'm missing is Amps data. It was added in frsky protocol 2. Current Amps and max Amps would be great to have.

In the future it would be great to combine voltage and current to power in watt!

I'm waiting for the sensor to add it....
FrSky announced it for the end of this month...

Ah, thats why it is not in!
I build my own sensorhub using a arduino pro mini and a flytron current sensor.

How goes this? I am (or was last year) doing similar, and would like to continue on it ...

I also have made an Arduino version to get telemetry data onto the radio.

As I made the NMEA version of ER9X that doesn't use the FrSky hardware, my solution is a little bit different. For the NMEA version look at the wiki.

I use the 'normal' NMEA hardware (module of a GPS mouse and two APC200 transceivers for the rf link).

The arduino 'mini Arduino pro' with atmege 328 reads eight analog channels, six digital inputs (switches) and one digital input to count rotations per minute and the gps data

Depending on the program of the arduino:
a) I convert the gps data to the FrSky protocol, add the additional data and display them with the FrSky version of ER9X

b) stream the NMEA records as received from the GPS module and add the additional data in a NMEA like format and display them with the NMEA version of ER9X

I modified both ER9X versions a little bit to show more than basically is supported.

This is what it looks like on my transmitter
six voltages, RPM and six digital inputs shown on additional screen 5 of NMEA version

I did almost the same. Reading data from flytron current sensor, sparkfun bmp085 baro and flytron GPS. Converting the data to Frsky protocol and using an rs232 converter to interface with the receiver.
And I also changed the er9x software to setup my telemetry screens.
But using open9x now and that telemetry code is more complex. Looking into it.

Next week i hope to implement current sensor.
I suppose that for current apart real time data, only max is needed and not minimum.

Can someone explain the telemetry system on the open9x a bit? I'm slightly confused how I should calibrate my channels. Currently I have a voltage divider on the A2 channel (2k and a 22k resistor so divider ratio is 1:12) so a full battery is around 1.05V on the A2 port. How am I supposed to calibrate this? What do I put in the "range" setting?

If your ratio is 1:12 then you should set "Range" to 12x3.3V=39.6V.
You'll have very low measurement resolution with so much division though. For a 3s battery (what you seem to have) you'd ideally use a 1:4 ratio.

One of the 'new' features in open9x is the display of the voltage on the calibration page.

What I love with this is getting the calibration right is easy.

Measure the voltage on the pack with a meter. Then simply use the calibration to adjust the a1/a2 values till they match!

Maybe I'm just not seeing it but is there a data field that will hold max speed and max altitude acheived in flight?

Thats the only one I can look at and thats once I land.

The custom data screens are great but I can't look at them while in flight...115 mph one foot off the deck, I ain't lookin down at my radio.

Yes. While Spd and Alt means Speed and Altitude, Spd+ means Max Speed and Alt+ means max altitude.
As soon as we will have a way to play prompts from the SD-card on the ersky9x you will have the radio telling you your speed. I have it on my v4 with the SOMO-14D, but there is no audio amp and I don't hear it unless I am in my garage :(

Bertrand: Do you know what chip is on the SOMO-14D? Is it a WTV020-sd?
I'm still looking into adding a board, with a WTV020 on it, into the stock radio hardware.

AFAIK the chip's surface is filed anyway:

But they suggest it is: http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php?topic=78268.0

Has anyone else tried the winged shadows how high with open9x?
I select it but it does not work?
Er9x loaded does for me. All latest versions.

You said it worked with a previous version (except a bad meters/feet conversion). Am I right? It doesn't work at all now?

Absolutely loving open9x and have recently modded 9x for telemetry using the "Direct to DHT with no-TTL" method.
It's exciting to be getting so many new features so frequently. Thanks to all developers and their hard work. Updated to 811 today.

I am testing out GPS telemetry on my way to work in the car :D I am receiving telemetry fine, but have noticed that my Speed+ value does not store the maximum speed properly.

eg) If I am stationary and zero all values with MENU, then increase speed to 60k it will update the max until around 40k then stops increasing.
Even if I reset the values while at 60k it will still not capture a max anywhere near 60k.

Anyone else seen this issue?

I have to check, the speed is received in kts, and converted to km/h, but I think that the max is not converted.

Thats why I asked my original question about max speed. I did set one field for Speed+ thinking that might be for recording max speed and I was correct in my assumption however it didn't record my max speed so then I fugured it wasn't for max speed.

It IS max speed, but apparently recorded in kt whatever the display unit is chosen (i.e. it's a bug). Bertrand has certainly added that fix to his long list now :)

Ahah! Thanks Bertrand and Kilrah, it makes sense now. I checked the code before posting and couldn't see how it could possibly not be working, however I forgot about the units!
Now I know it is knots and so until the bug is fixed I will have fun doing "x1.85" in my head!
