I just ordered Part # LM78L05ACZNS-ND VR. Then I thought to myself, self you have seen that VR some were before? I have a box of ESC that don't work. The second heat shrink cover I cut off, a MESTERY 30a ESC. Got my magnifier out and there it was a 78L05 the same voltage reg. I just popped, on my new out of the box 9X.
Yes, I'm one of the many it seems that in my excitement to get the Tx up and running plugged the dam thing in reversed. That VR seems to be the only part that I can find that does not look well. Hoping that is the case?? Ordered a new Tx just in case. Expensive lesson learned, till the next time?
There's all kinds of regulators, and fuses on a ESC. And you can practice your lack of soldering skill on a old ESC.
Free Voltage reg.
Re: Free Voltage reg.
There can be up to 3 dead regulators, a capacitor and a burnt track:

What breaks will depend from one case to another depending on things like how long you left the power reversed...

Re: Free Voltage reg.
Thanks Kilrah
But from looking at the damage done on some boards it obvious there was a fire of some sort? I heard the "pop" and instantly turned it back off. I could not find the damage on first inspection? The next day I got the magnifier out and went over it again looking for all the obvious and documented damage. The 78L05 on the right leg looked like it exploded, no fire, just "pop". The issue of the Reg. under the power switch I have to look at more closely. thanks again, Joe

Re: Free Voltage reg.
There's also a track near the LCD connector that breaks sometimes.. I would also replace the big capacitor near the regulator.. some are black and some are orange..

Trauma50,
I am courious how you came out on fixing your radio?
I got lucky and only had to replace the 5v reg and capacitor on mine.
