New Member - Introduction

Post by paulj »

Good afternoon everyone,

I have come across this wonderful resource having taken notice of the Taranis over the last six months or so. I finally bought one recently - fantastic!

I have started flying again after a 10+ year layoff (to fly full size gliders!). Previously I had a Multiplex 3030, and flew F3F. Barcs Open class, and general slope.

I have used Linux since 1996, and never looked back. Open source is definitely the way to go.

Thanks for setting this forum up and for all the hard work!

Greetings and welcome. :)

You tick all the right boxes in my book.. Tray format radio, Full size gliding and slope and the icing on the cake is Linux. In my case full size became a pain with all the hassle and politics that came with it after a while, not to mention the ever rising costs. Slope soaring was a joy until the price of fuel to get to various sites became prohibitive, along with the take over by the hang glider and paraglider types.

Now please tell me and JHSA who is a member here also. Do you fly using your thumbs on top of the sticks or the proper way using the pinch method? :)

Oh dear! I fly using thumbs, as I learnt to do with my Acoms set back in 1980. I have tried pinch method, but revert to thumbs normally. I fly mode 1 - another throwback to having a two channel set initially. Jhsa - my wife is German, so I do get over at least once per year, normally to Markdorf near Bodensee. I haven't ever taken a model over though.

Thanks for the welcome gents!

welcome to the thumb flyer team. Our thumbs are an extension of the sticks, so we have proper control  I will get a slap in the face in a minute.. ;) :)

I live a bit faraway from Bodensee.. Just a bit.. about 800Km :D
If you ever come up north let me know ;)

What a pity. :( Yes some people got into the bad habit of using thumbs on the top of the TX sticks. Most manufacturers tried to get people to stop/dissuade people doing this by adding sharp spikey bits to the tops of them. Bet you didn't fly full size that way.

I know you would look forward to that, hence the change of tactics to the silent treatment at this point. I'm sure you know how effective that is João.

I did fly full size.. A bit awkward to fly them with my thumbs though ;) :) But models I fly with my thumbs.. Just like the champions do ;) :D
I can fly tray style as well, but only easy aircraft. When something requires a bit more precision, I use my thumbs :) :D

Yes, I know how effective that is :) Nice and peaceful sometimes
At my age, that doesn't work with me anymore.. :) A punch in the nose might though

You're right I didn't - the radio send button used to get in the way, and I would struggle to use the wheel brake!

New member here, also. I'm one of the non programming but old school mechanical setup type.
Took a break from rc, last 3 years I'vebeen a hard knock life.
13 years rc heli, on RR.
Bit by bit I'm going through the opentx university, and having to re-read alot.
Brain a bit slower, since I hit 60.
I read forums on here, before I ordered a Taranis, and I thought why not give it a shot.
So now, I have a Taranis x9d, older,2014 date, which I got used, and a new Turnigy 9x. Price was too good
to pass up,tx and rx for $49.99 and open source.
With so many years rc, it's like the hobby is brand new.
Thank you os crew :) for all the the work setting up the openrc and opentx sites.
