That won't work if you don't have that hole on the battery cover 
The plug has some little pins too
Now, could say that the plug can be connected in both positions, that would probably be true

Yes, it works with normal plug, I accidentally made the hole too big. The idea was to make a tight fit, but my measurements went a bit wrong.

Exactly, no hole, no cable and yes you can plug either way.

As far as I can see on the pictures, you still have to make a hole on the battery cover, or am I missing something?.

There might be something I am missing, but looking at the pictures, you need to cut the hole in the battery cover to be able to plug both halves. The magnet just hods both halves together.. What you have is exactly what I have on mine, But I just used the stock USB connector from the 9XT.
