Haptic Questions

Post by sporez »

I'm going to be adding in a piezo speaker and vibrator motor for the haptic feedback mod and before I began have a few questions.
  • In the wiki diagram it says to cut the tracks where indicated with the red marker. However, it's not clear to me exactly where to cut. The top red mark looks like it's cutting only half of the track? And the bottom mark looks like it's in between two tracks? Could someone clarify exactly where to cut?
  • Is exactly 390ohm resistor required for the connection to the cpu pin? I have 220ohm or 470ohm, would either of those work instead?
  • And is 4.7u the same as 4.7uF?

The dark part is not the track. The lighter colored parts are where the copper is under the green coloring.

I can't answer the resistor question.

Yes to #3 the capacitor question

The 4.7uF is beside the cap marked 4.7u (in the green) , so.. yes.. it's the same. :D

The resistor is used to lower current flow , either should work, the higher the resistance the lower the power, the lower the resistance, the higher the power.

Like an led, you need a resistor on the cathode when hooking it up to a voltage supply. The larger the resistor, the dimmer the led is, the smaller the resistance, the brighter it is.

I will get a new image for this alternative board up today.

Seems to be that more tx's have the alternative board :)

In which case.... You have cut tracks that dont need cutting :)

Solder bridge the cuts... And follow the new image.

I haven't done any modding yet. I'm just confused because the two boards in the wiki look exactly the same. My board has a slightly different layout (there's pictures of it in the other haptic thread).

Look closer :). They are different.

The change is related to the pin used to drive the haptic.

I see what you mean. However, the actual board looks the same. My board doesn't look like that.

My buddy setup his new 9x with the new revision speaker board using the picture and diagram from the other thread. It is working good.

Well i just followed that guide and it seems to be working! I get vibration for things like, center trims, new model, low voltage alarm, etc.

However I wish the pezio buzzer was a bit louder. This is the one I installed: http://www.ebay.com/itm/220951641092?ss ... 1504wt_905

Does that seem like a decent one?

Have you opened the holes under the speaker grill in the front of the body. I drilled a few small holes in mine and the sound is much louder, although I'm using a speaker from a greetings card, looks very much like the one in cheeto's thread.

Well that could be it, but I don't think so. It seems that the stock speaker might have been even louder than this one.

Just a thought, I didn't have exact resistor matches so I used a 1.1K instead of 1k and 470ohm instead of the 390ohm. Could either of these changes make it be more quiet?

I have tried numerous piezo speakers. Not all are loud as each other - so best to try a few :)

Okay, well then I guess I'll try others. Maybe I'll buy a card and use the speaker from that like some other guys on here have done.

I don't know where you're from but I've used 6 of these in 9x's and they seem to work well. I haven't heard any complaints about volume.

Very nice! I have Radioshack locally so I might just stop by and pick that up. Thanks.
