Problem with Taranis gimbals.

Post by Rad »

UPDATED POST:

Hi everyone. What I thougt it was going to be an easy task, has resulted to be a pain.

I installed a couple of Taranis Gimballs on my flysky, I followed Joao tutorial: viewtopic.php?f=126&t=7987

At the beginning I thought I was going to be able to unplug the flysky gimbals and plug the taranis ones, but as you know it is not like that. So I unsoldered the flysky connectors, and I soldered the wires straight to the holes in the small board.

First I installed the right gimbal and it seems to work perfect, but with the other as you can see in the video, I had a lot of problems.

https://youtu.be/8dcBcmkSaQE

Video 2:

https://youtu.be/l6UAzuES0TA

So I tried desoldering and soldering again the wires to the small board, and I think I ended breaking it.

Do you have any idea what could i do?

Mods done some time ago and with good results:
9xtreme with sd card.
PPM Protection (the resistor in the back plate, for preventing damaging the radio when removing the module switched on.
4, 3 pos switches.
Lifepo battery.
Pot replaced with a 6 pos switch.

Mods recently done with might or might no have nothing to do with the problem:
Installed reversed polarity. I installed this piece: http://www.ebay.com/itm/10PCS-SS34-Vish ... SwlaxWNrVN
Installed battery on the 9xtreme
Replaced stock gimbals to taranis ones.

Hi Rad,
See here for some possible help: (viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10428&start=30#p132126).
Some info about wrong wiring colors in the Turnigy 9x radios (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=9977&start=30#p128295).

Hi Bob, I guess the wires are correct, because the stick moves in the direction I want, but it as you can see in my video, one of the sticks does not work very wel...

It worked like that after installing the gimbal, and then after soldering and unsoldering the wires, I think I broke the small PCB.

I contacted flysky to try to buy spares, but in case they dont reply, does anybody know where can I buy a couple?

And most important: Why does my gimball work like that?

Here is a circuit of the 9X. The wiring on the trim/gimbal board is shown on the third sheet, so you could check that to see if everything is connecting OK. You may even be able to wire the gimbals up avoiding the small PCB with this information.

I see, ..... your left Gimbal behaviors like the original turnigy gimbal pots when they go bad.
Maybe it was bad when you received it ? and so maybe where you purchased it, will make good for it, by asking them ?

Well, I have some news here...

Bob, your idea was great, so I unsoldered the Taranis gimbal and I installed the old flysky gimbal... And it does exactly the same, so then I dont think the taranis gimbal is defective in any way.

I also noticed the ELE and RUD switches now dont work (modded to 3 pos)... The rest of the radio works perfect. but those ones are dead...

I hope if I fried something, is not the 9xtreme...

EDIT: WIth ELE Neutral, RUD does nothing.

With ELE down, RUD down does DOWN,

With ELE UP, RUD down does UP

In the video, at least for me, it looks like your right gimbal is also not working correctly.. it looks like it is also jumping.

I did post the wire colors that are normally used on the 9x radio, but if you look at the very beginning of my 9xtreme installation guide, you will see that on another radio the wire colors are swapped. It seems that some Flysky workers might be color blind :)
Better is to measure which of the wires is the +V, and which of them is Ground with them disconnected from the gimbal. When you find those, the other is obviously the signal wire that connects to the middle pin of the pot.

But the problem you're seeing looks quite strange to me.. What happens if you connect the original gimbal?

What version of ErSky9x do you have installed on your radio?
Please update to the latest test version from here:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4676

Download "ersky9xProvR221e7.zip" and flash "ersky9XT_rom.bin" to the radio.
Then start the radio in maintenance mode by turning it ON while holding both horizontal trims away from each other, for a second or so, and then release them.. Then update the bootloader from the same file.

After you did that please turn the radio ON and press the UP key LONG to enter the debug menus and then LEFT 3 times to get to a menu called "Slave". On the lines below you have a line "Revision", and another "Available". What numbers are in front of those? I have "0.7".

This might not have anything to do with your problem but we never know. And specially this last step should be done on every 9xtreme board anyway.
It is also a good idea to have the bootloader up to date.. :)

Please check all connectors are well seated, specially the 6 pin one on the right side when you open the radio with the gimbals facing down. It is a 6 pin connector that connects to the 9x original mainboard. Both ELE and RUD switches connect there..
Also check the 9xtreme's pogo pins are making good contact with the original 9x mainboard pads. If necessary losen the screws and carefully re-position the 9xtreme board. Then tighten the screws again. Be careful not to over tighten them.

Check if the gimbals now work as they should.

João

EDIT: Watching your video, I got the feeling that your radio's screen is not updating as it should. That could be caused by a bad connection between the 2 boards.
What happens if you connect a servo to the receiver.. Does it responds to the sticks as it should, or does it jumps around like on the display??

Hi Joao. I flashed a test version only two days ago, but I have seen there is a newer one, so I will try it tomorrow, and also I will test the servo tomorrow morning.

I checked all the connectors, and everything seems to be OK. I tested the switches for a while and I discovered this:
WIth ELE Neutral, RUD does nothing.

With ELE down, RUD down does DOWN,

With ELE UP, RUD down does UP

I checked the 9xtreme, I removed it two days ago for installing the battery, and now I inspected it again and seems to be OK.

Little offtopic here: I think I have seen somewhere that there was a mod about replacing the case radio screws with something, for not to wear the radio case. Do you know if that is true or did I just had a dream with it? If exist, where can I find them?

I think Smartieparts sold a kit a while ago.. Don't know if it is still available, but I don't think so..

WIth ELE Neutral, RUD does nothing.
What do you mean by "Nothing"?
With ELE down, RUD down does DOWN,

With ELE UP, RUD down does UP
Please check your connections. maybe you swapped the wires from the switches?
Check for broken wires on the switches.
Check the switch configuration in the "Hardware" menu.

I know that I'm repeating myself, but again, did those switches ever work after their mod?

Hi Joao, sorry I did not reply you yesterday, I went to bed, I was tired after some hour fighting with the radio.

I updated the firmware.
The Slave says: Revision 0.7, Available 0,7.

And in version, V.6992- 23.09.2017
ersky-pe7r221 9xt

I was using the three pos switches for a year or so, with no problems.
I checked the wires and everything seems to be OK

Whatever is happening, it seems to be affecting only the left side of the radio. Left gimbal, and both troubled switches are also on the left.. Please check there is ground on the switches and on the gimbal, measured from some ground point on the board, Perhaps from the expansion grid..
Remove the 9XT and look for bad soldering or solder shorts between pins on all connectors. It wouldn't be the first time it happened, nor the second..

João

EDIT: By the way, Steven from Smartieparts just posted on the forum saying he will post the 9xtreme files so we can better diagnose and fix problems.

Well guys, very BAD news here. After struggling with the gimbals problem, I decided to order another flysky radio and start again. So I received it, and when I was going to install the 9xtreme on it I saw this (see attached pics)

So... Why that happened? What can I do now? Where can I send it to repair? Its a pity that the 9xtreme is no longer for sale, and also Im short of funds for buying one anyway...

Edit: I installed the 9xtreme in the old radio, and everything seems to work except the problems already mentioned... Hope somebody can fix it for me.

Geeehhhhhhhhhhhhh.. You must have shorted something.. Can you please follow that trace and see where it goes? it looks like it goes from one connector to the other?
Then we can have a look at the schematic.

Yeah, thats probarbly my fault, and I might shorted something, but I have no idea when or how... Maybe when soldering the gimballs to the small pcb? I cant really tell...

According to my eyes, what is shorted is this, but I can not see it very clearly...

The thing is, I am sure that I will be unable to fix it by myself, and due to the 9xtreme is no longer produced, is there anywhere where I can send the board to be repaired? If not, what can I do with my 9x radio?

I also contacted Steve, so maybe he can help me.

That blue line seems to be the charging circuit. The yellow seems to be the BATT voltage after the switch.

Did you connect something to the radio's charge port?
Did you short the battery while charging it?
Did you connect the charger to thew charging port with the battery removed?

I have never conected anything to the radio charge port. I thought it had no use when using lifepo batteries, so I always charge and balance the battery outside the radio and model

I must say I did the reverse polarity mod shortly before noticing the gimbals problem, so the mistake might be there, but I dont think so.

Also I have not connected anything to the expansion grid so far. My idea was to install the multiprotocol module, but I have not even tried due to the gimbal problems that I wanted to fix first

Due to there are no more 9xtreme, do you think if I can send the board somewhere for repairs? If it is unrepairable, what alternative do I have for using my radio as always?

That will be helpful. Could you please send it to my email? If I find somebody who repares PCBs (Im sure there must be people that do it) they will probarbly need it, specially when I dont have another working board for them to compare.

Update. Surprisingly in my small City there is a bunch of guys that every month or so met and repair things for free! They say they think they can repair it, but it will help a lot to bring them as many data as possible. So if any of you have any data or something that I can bring to them, would be great!

First thing is to find out if those traces are really completely burnt, if they are not shorting to anything else, and then repair them with some wires. Can you post a picture of the backboard (PCB on the back) of your radio? good resolution please.. I wonder if something is shorted there.
