newbe problems
I bought a FLYSKY TH9X about a year ago and love it. I just bought a second one for a friend so we could fly together and ordered 2 SmartieParts Boards to upgrade them.We just completed the upgrades but there are problems. 1st, my original radio won't go into Bootloader Mode. Holding the hor trims together and turning power on just results in startup to model 01. Transmitter #2 goes into bootloader mode but never leaves the "connecting" screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: newbe problems
Welcome to the forum.. Can you please confirm that you're talking about the 9xtreme board, that should be installed on top of the 9x mainboard? And if yes, you have 2 of them installed in two radios??

Re: newbe problems
Taking the first radio, please go to the "DIAGSWTCH" screen and check the trims all work. At the bottom right of the display you should see the '0's change to '1' as you move each trim switch.

Thanks MikeB. It appears the left trim switch only works in one direction. Dissasembling now to see if wire is broken or switch is bad. Will let you know.

Make sure the connector is plugged in to J5 fully.

Re: newbe problems
Thanks again Mike but I'm not going to get off so easy as a bad connection. Looks like a bad physical switch on the Trims PC Board under the left stick. After a lot of searching I found the replacement switch but had to buy 100 of them. Be in sometime in August so if anyone else has this problem I'll have spare switches I can send you while they last. Now -- Any suggestions for radio # 2? It goes into Bootloader mode - I connect the USB cable - the PC responds with the audio beep - but the Tx screen never goes beyond the "connecting" message. What am I doing wrong?

Re: newbe problems
Nothing probably. It never says anything other than "Connecting. . .". What should happen is two 'hard drives' should appear on the PC.
Do you see these?

Re: newbe problems
Thanks guys. Back to radio #1. I took the little trims board out and checked everything from the switches all the way thru to the end connector, Everything works! The red and brown wires switch when the buttons are pushed but when I plug it back into J5 one side no longer works. I checked the solder joints on the SmartieParts Board and they look good. No cold joints or noticeable defects. I did note that none of the joints flow thru to the top of the board. Is this a multi layer board with inner layers? Should I try to reflow some of the pins? I'm not as young as I used to be and I shake a bit so soldering is not one of my strong points any longer. Thanks again

Re: newbe problems
Pin 9 of J5 should connect to the processor pin 38 and pin 7 of J5 should connect to the processor pin 2.

Re: newbe problems
Mike, Looking down on the board which end of J5 is pin 1? I assume the pin with the black dot beside it is pin 1 on the processor and you count counter clockwise around the chip?

Re: newbe problems
Pin 1 is closest to the label J5, pin 8 is ground.
You are correct about the processor pin numbering.

Re: newbe problems
Thanks. No continuity on either of those pins. Also on my Tx the wires on J5-7,8,& 9 go to the Vert Trim Switch. They are White, grey, & violet.

Re: newbe problems
Sorry, I misread the circuit.
The horizontal trim connections are on J5, pins 5 and 6.
Pin 5, on J5, goes to a 220 ohm resistor (R12), then to the processor pin 38.
Pin 6, on J5, goes to a 220 ohm resistor (R13), then to the processor pin 2.

Re: newbe problems
Mike,
I have continuity from pin 6 to R13 but the other side of R13 to pin 2 on the processor is open. The Pin 5 path is fine.

Re: newbe problems
Check the processor pin 2 is soldered OK. Use a pin or needle and gently try pushing the pin sideways. If it moves it isn't soldered to the pad properly.

Re: newbe problems
Solder joint appears to be good. I notice there is a plated thru hole just after R13. May be a bad barrel or broken internal path?

Have a good look to check R13 is soldered down OK, otherwise I think we need Steven to comment.

Sorry, I've been away for awhile. I stopped getting notifications on this forum for some reason.
Just to be sure I understand the perceived problem, I've added a couple of pictures on here. Do I have this correct? I've indicated where R13 is and Pin 2 and you're saying there is no continuity between these points? To assist in your measurements, I've highlighted the path it takes (top and bottom) in red.

Re: newbe problems
I feel dumb for neglecting it for so long. I got busy with other things and without the reminders...
It wasn't until Thomas emailed me saying he'd been going back and forth with Mike that I thought to check in.
Now I see I have a lot of catching up to do.

Re: newbe problems
Steven,
Thanks for the Pic's they helped a lot! Found a small nick in the path just below and to the left of the battery holder. I tried to lay in a small jumper but it didn't last. I've been fighting cancer and the drugs they have me on make me shake to much for good soldering. After I put the jumper in I had continuity but when I screwed the board back down it no longer worked. If you have someone that can do the repair, I don't mind a fixed board.

Re: newbe problems
Hi Tom,
If you can get it repaired locally, I'll refund you to cover the cost. The kicker is finding someone that will do it for a reasonable fee. Some guys will say that's a $150 job when of course someone that knows what they're doing it should be 2 minutes and $10
Anyway, whether it is refunding or replacing, I've got your back.
