Upgrade 3 Position Switch Mod 9Xtreme

Upgrade 3 Position Switch Mod 9Xtreme

Hi,
This Mod is to upgrade the 9Xtreme radio's 2 position switch to a 3 Position Switch. :D
I have not done this mod yet and so I am learning to do this mod also.
I do not having a proper visualization in my mind (yet) to Which Wire Goes Where,
I will need help in completing this upgrade.

The 2-Position Switch I have chosen to upgrade first is the ELE (Elevator Switch) to the left side of the 9Xtreme Radio.
2 position ELE SW left side_a
2 position ELE SW left side_a
Note: Do not trust the wire colors as the 9x radio's may have different
wire colors for what the wire is used for between different 9x Radios
.
Inside showing 2 position SW wiring.
Inside showing 2 position SW wiring.
3 Position Switch to be installed.
3 Position Switch to be installed.
The next photo shows where the EXT # pins are located on the stock 9x radio's main board.
I believe I need to Use one of the EXT # to connect to the top terminal of the 3-Position Switch.
This is where I am not sure Which Wire Goes Where and need some help. :? :?:
Location of EXT # Pins.
Location of EXT # Pins.
Any of the EXT # pins can be used for the 3 Position Switch Upgrade Mod.
WARNING: If you are upgrading the Throttle and/or the Turn Switch to a 3-Position Switch, do NOT trust
that your 9x Radio's Ground Wire is connected to the center switch terminal of these stock switches.
9X Radio's do not use any normal discipline of World Wiring Codes to guide there wiring practices.
It will help you to identify which of these wires are the Ground wire, which the Ground wire will need
to be connected to the switch center terminal of your new 3-Position Switch for it to work properly.

See here for more 9Xtreme information: (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=7182).

Here is info about setting up text file (Model Notes) on the SD card also:

Hi,
Is the center Switch terminals where the ground wire is connected and also why they are able to be connected with other center switch terminals together ? :?:

Ground to center, solder the existing switch wire to the bottom pin (that's ID0). solder the new EXTx wire to the top pin of the new switch. See green text at top Right..
I should add to the text that ground must be connected to the middle pin and the original wire to the bottom pin. maybe I didn't because on my radio it was already like that ;) :)

Hi João,
Thank you, this helps a lot.
I made this photo showing the wiring connections.
3 position switch wire connections.
3 position switch wire connections.
The old Taranis Gimbals connectors (white plugs) do fit, so I will use them to make the EXT pin connections.

When I was replacing the 2-position ELE switch, I also decided to replace the 2-position RUD switch at the same time.
I soldered the 9x Radio wires to there proper BOTTOM terminals of the 3-position switches.
Then soldered the 9x Ground wires to the CENTER terminal of the 3-position switches which share the same Ground wires.
Then for the ELE switch I used the EXT4 pin and soldered it to the TOP terminal of the ELE 3-position switch.
And then for the RUD switch I used the EXT3 pin to the TOP terminal of the RUD 3-position switch.
EXT4 to ELE SW and EXT3 to RUD SW
EXT4 to ELE SW and EXT3 to RUD SW
Wire connections to the 3-Position Switches ELE and RUD
Wire connections to the 3-Position Switches ELE and RUD
I then powered up the 9Xtreme radio to check for any smoke and all was good. :D
Next to make the proper hardware setting changes in the 9Xtreme firmware,
I followed the procedure below to open the Hardware Menu:
Hold the left horizontal trim to the left while turning ON the Radio.
Note, only need to hold the left horizontal trim for a second or so, this will allow you to open the Hardware menu.
The Hardware menu will be found in Radio Setup.
With the Hardware menu now open I scrolled through the Hardware menu until I found the ELE switch and set it to EXT4
and then went to the RUD switch and set it to EXT3.
Set ELE sw to EXT4 and RUD sw to EXT3
Set ELE sw to EXT4 and RUD sw to EXT3
Next exit the menus and power off the radio and then power the radio back ON.

I then checked the ELE and RUD switch position indicator Arrows (symbols ^ - v) and they are showing the proper switch positions.

Switches in Center - Positions

Hi Mike,
I just upgrade the THR SW to a 3-Position Switch and connected it to EXT8.
But when the THR SW is in the third SW position it still only shows - center position.
The Third position seem to be not working.
The First and Second positions are working.

Plenty of possibilities for the labelling of EXT8 to be wrong, I may well have the code wrong somewhere on either the M64 or on the 9Xtreme. Please try setting the switch to EXT7 (and then all the others 6,5,2,1 and see if one of them works.

Hi Mike,
I changed THR SW to EXT 7 and same failed results as it had with EXT 8.
Change RUD SW from EXT 7 to EXT 8 and it is working properly, same as it did when connected to EXT 7.
I will try THR SW to the EXT 3 connection next and report back after this test try.

Hi Mike,
I changed THR SW from EXT 7 to EXT 3 with same failed results as it had with EXT 7.
I have also checked the continuity of the upgraded 3-position THR SW and it is good.

Could you check the third connection on the new THR switch is switching to ground?
My 9Xtreme has the ELE switch converted to 3-pos on EXT3. As a test, I set the THR switch to also use EXT3.
With the ELE switch in the middle position (EL-), switching the THR switch gives TH^ and TH-.
With the THR switch at TH-, when I switch the ELE switch to ELv, the THR switch shows THv, so I think the firmware is working correctly.

It does seem as though there is a problem with the switch itself. Since you know that using EXT3 works with the RUD switch, it should work with the THR switch.
You could try the same test I did. Put you ELE and RUD switches back on EXT4 and EXT3, then set the THR switch to also use one of these. When the THR switch is in the middle, and you switch the RUD or ELE switch down, the THR switch should also show as down (THv). That will confirm the firmware is OK or not.

Hi Mike,
Found my error, the 9x radios (China) do not have any color coding with there wiring.
The two wire colors are light brown and faded orange which almost look like the same color.
I wrote down the wire colors of each wire terminal position, but made an error, soldering the ground wire to the outer terminal causing the problem.

Have corrected the problem and now is working properly. :D
Thank you for your help, sorry to have made the error.

Hi Mike,
Thinking about it, I believe I did transfer the original 2-Position Switch wires to the new 3-Position Switch terminal connections to be the same.
I am feeling confident that this 9x radio had the ground wire connected to the outer terminal
and by being wired this way for a 2-Position Switch it would work this way.

So in hind sight, it would have been better to have check which wire was the ground wire before transferring the two original wires
to the new 3-Position Switch terminals . (Ground wire needs to be connected to the center Switch terminal.)

Hi Bob
Thanks for the useful instructions
I am just following them for fitting 3 pos switches to my 9Xtreme
You warn that the ground wire isnt always connected to the centre pin of the switch and its best to check before fitting the new switch
How do you safely check which wire is the ground wire?
I assume you use a multimeter and test the wires for any voltage from the wire to the ground pin on the 9 pin board connector (pin no 4)

There is one, 3-pos switch that will have ground on its centre connection. Simply check for continuity (with power off) between that centre connection and the ground connection to the 2-pos switch you are replacing.

Re: Upgrade 3 Position Switch Mod 9Xtreme

Post by bob195558 »

When I upgraded two 9Xtreme radios from 2 position switches RUD, ELE and AIL, GEAR to three position switches,
these all were using the center terminal connector for the ground connection.
But when I upgraded the THR switch to a 3 position, I assumed the ground wire would also be the same,
but after several frustrating hours I used a multimeter to identify which wire is the ground wire.
By removing the battery (no power to radio) and using a multimeter to check ground continuity between the 9Xtreme Expansion Grid ground
(pins 3, 8, 13 are all ground connections) and the switch wires, I found that the center switch wire was not the ground wire.
9Xtreme Expansion Grid pins 3, 8 and 13 are all ground connections.
9Xtreme Expansion Grid pins 3, 8 and 13 are all ground connections.
After correcting this problem the upgrade then worked properly. :D

Added note: pin 11 "Battery Voltage" is switched power, which including the "soft power" switch.
This Voltage is then also switched to the Internal and External modules by transistors controlled by the processor.
Pin 9: (PPM/PXX) is the Internal module connection, Pin 7: + power and Pin 8: GND connection.

I have another question regarding switch names

I am transfering my flap function from switch ID0 to the rudder switch on the left side of the TX

Is it possible to rename the switches, say from RUD, ELE to A,B,C etc to avoid confusion when setting up various mixes and voice alarms

For the 9X, the switches are named to match the labels on the Tx itself. I think renaming the switches would lead to more confusion, not less!

I've made a note to look into allowing user re-naming of the switches (like you may do for the sticks).

Thanks for the quick reply

Yes I agree the existing switch names are clear and avoid confusion as the basic set up but perhaps a user only change function in the hardware menu is a useful option - just a thought as I think I may get confused when I reassign a few switches

You might look into the "Model Notes" feature where you may call up some text (from the Sd card) specific to each model. You may put a list there of what each switch does for that model.
