Absolute noob needs help. About to quit before 1st flight.

Post by BuffaloHunter »

Hello people. I'm a complete novice and have very little understanding of this. I purchased a quadcopter second hand with a Turnigy 9xr pro. I also got some goggles and cam and set it all up and spent a lot of money. 2weeks in and I haven't had a single flight :( I'm about to quit.

I have no understanding of the 9xr pro and cant get it to make the 3 way switch aux1. I have got it to fly 1m but it doesn't stabilise itself.

Basically all I want to do is get it to have 2 or 3 flight modes where it can self stabilise and then turn off for tricks.

So confused please help, I would be so grateful. Thankyou.

Don't worry, we'll get you sorted. I'll explain some thing to start with. You may already know some of this, but it gets us to a starting point.
First, because you have bought the 9XR-PRO second hand, we don't know exactly what you have. This is because the firmware (computer code on the radio) that makes it work is what is called "open source". This means you have a very capable transmitter, but the firmware keeps getting "improved", and you may update it easily, so what you have may not be the firmware the radio had originally.
Please switch the radio on, then press the LEFT arm of the 'cross' switches to get to the radio setup menu. Now we need you to get to the VERSION display. Depending on the firmware installed this needs either pressing the RIGHT button (of the cross switches) until you get to the screen or you will have an index menu where you can see the names of options, one of which is "Version". If you have the index menu, then use the cross switches until Version is highlighted, then press MENU.
Please then post exactly what you see on that screen.

The next question(s) is(are) is aux1 channel 5?
Do you know what the flight controller is in the quad?
Do you know what you need to send for the channel to select different flight modes?

I know very little about flight controllers and their specific requirements, which is why I asked the other 2 questions:
Is aux1 channel 5?
What does the flight controller need to see to select different flight modes?

If you don't know anything about the flight controller, we need someone to come on here that does.

No idea sorry, hence why I'm stuck. All I know is its AETR 1,2,3,4....??

I was trying to use baseflight to program aux1 for a 3 way switch so I could set a stabalise mode and trick mode?

From a youtube video I think Naze32 has channel 5 mapped to aux1 & channel 6 aux2.

Go to the mixer menu, go down to CH05, then set the source to sIDx.
The three way switch will now set channel 5 to output one extreme, centered and the other extreme for the three switch positions.
You then need to configure your flight controller to responde to these three settings.

hhhmmm?

Now when I connect a battery the quad beeps constantly?

I can see that the turnigy responds to the switch in the main screen. But it doesn't respond on baseflight?

If I set channel6 to id0, +id1, +id2 it shows on baseflight that the 3way switch it is aux2??

Each flight controller is different, you need to see its documentation/related forums.

God damn it!! I read you need to calibrate Accelerometer & Magnometer so I tried to do this. Got confused as the MAG wasn't working. So I reset it. ?Turns out it doesn't have a MAG as its a cheap naze32 board. It only has GYRO & ACCEL.

Now the settings are lost, I cant connect to the quad from the transmitter and arm motors? All settings are lost

This has to be one of the worst experiences of all. Spend £500+ and get a smack in the nuts! No one said it would be impossible. I have watched countless videos over and over till 3am for weeks all day long???? No luck and now gone backwards.

Thank you for your help people, appreciated.

Ok getting somewhere now....

I had to bind the transmitter again...and recalibrate the esc's....and make the naze32 flight controller ppm...

1- The good thing is I have now set aux1 as the 3way switch (as you showed me Mike, setting ch5 for sIDx). In Baseflight it recognises the 3way switch as aux1 but when I try to set Angle and Horizon and Save it does nothing? Any ideas please?

2- Does anyone know how to set the End Points for the receiver? I can trim the Mid Points to 1500 but I don't know how to trim End points 1000 and 2000?

Thank you.

These are called "Limits" on ersky9x and you set them on the "Limits" menu.
If you haven't already seen them, the original manuals for the 9XR-PRO are here: viewtopic.php?f=122&t=5575#p79483.

Since the 9XR-PRO was released, the firmware has been updated, and you have a more recent version on your 'PRO. You should find this manual: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6473#p90349 also helpful. Much of ersky9x and er9x is the same. An updated manual for ersky9x is being worked on, but it is all being done on a voluntary basis.

Thanks Mike. That's another thing solved! I've been wondering about Limits for a bit but couldn't find the terminology. Sorry for my lack of understanding. Pretty easy when you know where to look! Got it nicely dialled in now.

Now to get Baseflight to SAVE Angle & Horizon on AUX1 and I'm set I think.....so close.

Have you made sure the ranges for both functions don't overlap?

Ok so I went on youtube and found that Baseflight has issues. So I used Cleanflight, adjusted the ranges (as you mentioned Kilrah) and then set ANGLE & HORIZON on aux1 for the 3way switch.

Another problem now?!!? :x

So I went out for a test flight and it seems seriously wrong?
Before I could take off and fly, but with no stabilisation.
Now it goes bloody crazy! It spins and crashes on the floor. Its like I put a cw/ccw propeller on wrong, but I haven't? and the motors look like they're turning in the right direction.

Any ideas now please?

Figured it out. The naze32 flight controller was mounted sideways with the mini usb connector 90deg Yaw. This made the flight controller think it was facing the wrong direction.

Changed in Cleanflight...NOT Baseflight!

For some reason Baseflight is not working and wont save things. It is having some serious problems and that was half my problem. As soon as I used Cleanflight it sorted a lot of issues.

Went for my first REAL flight and think I wet myself a little, like excited puppy. :D

Once again, thank you Mike & Kilrah. You people are amazing! Great appreciation.

As a lovely little bonus, when I was fiddling around, I managed to set a fail safe on the motors so if it loses ppm connection the motors stop ;)
